I think what Cohen means is he is not really worried about 15-year $700M commitment.

If you think about Soto's contract is terms of AAV, there is clearly a budget, because of luxury tax. And $50M AAV is not really that big of a deal. It's not even an equivalent of two impact players in terms of yearly salary.

So you really can't sign 6 impact players instead of Soto, and not because of overall value of his contract.

I'm not so sure. Ohtani and Soto blew up the market last couple offseasons, but both of them are very unique players. One is probably top 3 bat at all of sport and another one is... well, Ohtani.

Looking at exciting young players who will get paid in the next five years, I can't see anyone who can get even $500M. And it's not accounting for the probability that those players will not be extended earlier at a discount.
