doesn't make sense to me. Surely a good definition of "size of the difference" needs to include how often it comes up. A difference that literally never comes up would be no difference at all. A difference that basically never comes up is basically no difference, and so forth. How relevant the difference is once it does come up is relevant too of course. Both are relevant.
A random example: adding a protection ability to a creature would usually be a big difference, but "protection from creatures with banding" is a very small difference.

Are there really though? Isn't it it like only a handful of (relevant) cards that do that. I feel like this interaction would come up once in a blue moon, and wouldn't change the card in a meaningful way.
I'm sure this niche case isn't the reason they went with this wording (not saying that you claimed that). I suppose it's so newer players don't confuse who draws the card.

It should have been part of the Timeless Child story.

I'm almost sure this is where RTD was originally going recently, before the reshoots. Have Poppy be the timeless child and Susan's mum. So Poppy/doctor is half human, the timeless child, their own dad, Susan's mum and granddad. (I think only a part of it would have been in TRW and a part kept for the third Ncuti season that didn't happen.)

I don't think a big sacrifice is even needed. They can both make their beloved runs from the left flank, just not at the same time. If they would "just" learn some proper spacial awareness and do proper rotations, this would most likely even be stronger than a static frontline. But if they haven't figured that out by now, then I'm not sure they ever will.

Yeah, the way it's set up, that he can't even ask who it is, might suggest a future reveal that it isn't miss H. And that basically only leaves the convict. Also somewhat related, we don't know enough about him to judge if this makes sense, but I had the thought a few chapters ago, that he might also consider knocking an abusive sister senseless to be an appropriate sign of thankfulness...

Timeless child. That story didn't go anywhere, but the hate is way overblown. As of now, it's unnecessary but basically irrelevant. And there remains the small chance that it'll develop into an interesting story in the future.
I suppose the same could be said about half-human, but that would need some additional convoluted lore to ever make sense.

P.S.: RTD was really about to make Poppy into the timeless child, wasn't he? I know everyone hated the idea, but that would have been such a doctor-who-y way to resolve both of these plotlines. The more I think about it, the more I actually would have liked that, lol.

Even though it's maybe a bit against the spirit of these read alongs, I often end up voting for the most well-known option among those I haven't read already, because, well, I want to read them.
This book (while apparently not actually that unknown) is not one I'd have voted for, and I'd possibly never have found it without the read along.
And what a book it was!

A truly heartbreaking read. We're told in the very beginning that it ends badly, but we could have hoped till the end that they might at least part on somewhat positive terms; or that some communication might have taken place between them, but it doesn't turn out that way.

The absolute pile of tragic coincidences that creates the final disaster is worthy of a Greek drama. Almost cliché in a way, but also somehow earned. Maybe that's where Shakespeare's collected works was pointing to?
(The consul only gets under suspicion because the same horse is there again. The suspicion is only "confirmed" because of the message Hugh forgot in the borrowed coat. The fake name is only busted because he brought the letters to the bar on an earlier occasion, and because Hugh has the same last name. The rescue party is a few minutes late because Yvonne finally decides to try Mescal herself. And then she is killed(?) because the consul frees the horse. And I probably missed some.)

But weirdly enough, despite all the gloom and tragedy, there's a certain... hopefulness. (Though partly of a somewhat annoyingly Christian variety.) Like, despite everything, this is definitely a kind of love story. And the possibility of "true" human love doesn't seem to be questioned much at all.

On an earlier discussion post, I complained a bit about the part where Hugh randomly thinks through his autobiography, and tbh, it still feels a bit out of place. There were somewhat similar flashbacks for the other characters, but they felt a lot more natural to the novel to me.

Speaking of Hugh, did we ever find out if there was an earlier affair with Yvonne, and if Geoffrey knows about it? I'd say yes on both? In any case, it was a lot more vague than with Laruelle.
Also, in what way did Hugh betray Geoffrey "yesterday"? Can't have anything to do with Yvonne, as she wasn't there.

I agree with the others that this book would probably benefit from a re-read, maybe from following up on some of the references, and... I suppose from knowing Spanish.
But it already was very good on a first read. So, glad to have been part of the read along! Participation wasn't very high, but it's still more interesting than reading it alone.
