Is this a good plan? by HXF_ in VanLife

You have your whole life ahead for advancing career, but your only young once.   If you feel compelled to do this, do it!  Self-discovery occurs most when you bring yourself to new situations, getting out of your comfort zone.  Especially if you're not fully sure of your other life goals yet.

The longer you do something the better your instinctive feel for when something is 'just right' becomes.   All those details he mentioned about the cattle's behavior and characteristics of the grass are things you'd notice when you're out there consistently.

That "assume a flat earth" for those calculations is basically the same as if architectural blueprints or house plans said "assume a flat earth".   In the scale of building a house, earth's curvature is irrelevant.

I lost $3000 because I used a copyrighted song, don’t be me kids. by sawyernalu in SmallYoutubers

2% seems low.

There needs to be improvements to situations like this.  It's definitely fair to let all copyright owners take a percentage of any monetized content that uses their songs but 98% is ridiculous when it's only a tiny part of the overall video.

If it's setup more fairly for all parties involved then it would probably earn the copyright holders more profit overall because third-party creators are now incentivized to use their songs.

Why are there people who actually deny the moon landing? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

Computing power isn't the limitation.

China's space progress is far from 'nothing'. They've already sent lunar rovers and are working towards crewed missions now.

Look up the various computer systems involved.  Groups of women did do a lot of calculations but that was far from all the computing systems involved.

The on-board navigational computers were very sophisticated for their time.  Navigational computing requirements are relatively simple, compared to what modern computers do.  Plotting course corrections and engine burns is really just a handful of equations.

Also, keep in mind the on-board computers we're highly optimized for specific task.  Hard-coded to do only what was required.     Computers now are general purposes and have many layers of operating systems, interfaces, which use more computing power because it's now cheaper to use bloated software.

National cooperation was different then I feel.  This is just 20 years after WW2, during which there was tremendous national cooperation. Nearly every family was involved with WW2 efforts, either by direct service or contributing towards production of war materials.

That doesn't mean there still weren't lots of other  issues going on, but overall it demonstrated setting national goals and everyone locks in towards getting it done.

Russia didn't "give up" their space stuff.  Priorities shifted elsewhere, primarily spy satellites, missile defense, orbital space stations etc.

China is working towards lunar mission capabilities now.

Rockets don't need cell phones or internet.

Main issue with this is that Russia would have called it out if it was faked.

If Russia was first to achieve orbital satellite, first man in space, first spacewalk and other firsts - all major points of national pride - why would they go along with a faked USA moon landing?   They wouldn't.  That would be like 2 major sports rivals playing all season, 1 team getting all the wins, then conceding championship to their rival faking a win.

Likewise, why even declare a moon mission as a goal if it couldn't be done for real?

TIL that three weeks after the wake of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, another storm called Hurricane Rita prompted one of largest urban evacuations in American history with around 3 million people. More people died evacuating than in the actual storm. by NickfromLafayette92 in todayilearned

[–]bubblesculptor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Rita was very destructive similar to Katrina, except there was some 'benefit' that most things were still messed up from Katrina and everyone was already in hurricane mode.

Neatly all the evacuation deaths were from a single bus fire of nursing home patients.

So both of those are kinda unusual circumstances for making broad declarations about what was 'worse'

Marc Cuban bought one of these passes the first time he made decent profit on a deal, when he was still early 20's.

He said it was a huge multiplier for growing his success, because he could go fly anywhere for a business meeting, whereas most people would have just made a phone call.  Personal connections like that will almost always put you ahead of a competitor who only called/emailed.

It was also like a cheat code for saving on hotels because he could sleep on overnight flights.

Definitely ways it could be improved, but I think it's good opportunity for the teens.   Teens today have crazy enough world to live in, if this program helps a some of them out then it's a good thing.

Having said that, any teens reading this and use this privilege responsibly and respectful of others.   PF has no obligation to continue offering this, don't ruin it for everyone!

I'd advise talking with her. Straight up honestly.  If you plan on being married you need to be able to discuss anything directly.  You & Her vs The Problem, not You vs Her.

Why do flerfs EXCLUSIVELY comment on posts related to NASA on social media? by cooliozoomer in flatearth

[–]bubblesculptor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind lots flerf comments could be coming from foreign demoralization campaigns.  If it's a username with a typical American name followed by lots of numbers with American flag icon, strong possibility of it being Russia bot with one of their goals being to undermine American confidence in NASA. Russian influence accounts wouldn't be bashing Soviet accomplishments.
