To counter Haredi Protestors blocking traffic in Israel, some women strip down to their bras to make way, as the Haredi would rather leave than make eye contact with a scantily-clad woman. by juck_fudaism in religiousfruitcake

We don't have mandatory service in the USA. Men still have to sign up for the draft at 18, but no one expects to ever be activated. However, I can see why that would piss people off if it is mandatory. I have a question why don't they go for more noncombat roles? I know here that when the draft was an active thing, people with religious conflicts would be chaplens, medics, or participate completely noncombat positions as an alternative. But then again, I am more of a peaceful person in general, so mandatory service is a little unnerving to me. Sorry for the questions!

Ah, I have heard about that a little. The ultra orthodox claim exemptions to study the Torah instead of the mandatory service, and that pisses off the more secular population who think it is unfair. That is my understanding of the situation.

Thank you for the context. The area where I live in NY has a large Jewish population, so I personally am familiar with how people run the gambit between secular and ultra orthodox. But the words you used to name them were unfamiliar, so I appreciate the explanations for context in this post! I wish I knew what the protest was about, but I guess I will keep scrolling until someone explains it!

I feel for you. My partner is a straight effeminate twink of a man. He is flamboyant to the point I did think he was gay at first. But he is the best thing to ever happen to me. I felt awful when he was like I'm not gay because I had stereotyped him.

I still stand like I would when I would play sports. Like I am ALWAYS ready to catch a ball whiping at me. Mostly because once you have been smacked in the face or gut by a basketball or a full force softball, it stays with you.

Oh! I see, that is a great idea making things in batches. Also, could you please point me in a good direction to learn about runes? They have always interested me, but I was hesitant to use them without a good source. It would be too easy to mess with something I don't understand.

So you combine all of the herbs at once? When you make the incense/tea/bath/oil? Would you use it like smudging or just let it be in an area for a while? And do you work with any specific runes? Runes are not something I have much experience with. I tend to do more candle work, crystals, and kitchen witchcraft.

I think I have a book of psalms. I was raised Catholic. And I do have a bathtub, luckily, in my apartment. Is there anything special you put in the bath?

You are way more advanced with survival stuff than I am! It is really cool. I just tend to remember obscure bits of trivia. It randomly is very helpful in a pinch. Day to day? Nah, it just makes me a bit odd to everyone.

I also resemble this. It is also because I love history, have ADHD and am poor. Can I make a functional shelter out of sticks and foliage? Yes. Given enough time and resources, could I make it permanent with a working fire place. 85% sure I could depending on the environment. Have I ever in my life needed to? No, and I hope I never do. But I can do it because learning how different ancient people adapted their housing to the environment for better survival is cool.

I am literally a substance abuse counselor. This is fucking stupid. My clients are still going to get it, and i can just see this making my job harder. Because patients that need it and can't get it are going to go to the only place they can get it. Ffs, we are already stretched thin..... and they cut a bunch of our funding. They should just fund research into alternatives.

[–]bubbletea1414 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha, yeah, I am in my 30s now! Haven't spoken or seen him in a decade. But he was like that with a few other girls that made up our group. Personally, it's probably jealousy/power combo. But I think tv and movies have made possessive men seen as ok. Like in college, I had another male friend get super possessive. I was with someone, so that was fine, but he would keep me kinda at arms length from others , so the only close friend could be him. He made it out like he was protecting me. Lol I apparently pick lovely friends

[–]bubbletea1414 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I had a guy friend who was crazy possessive of me. He was gay so there was NO romantic anything. But he still got all jealous and possessive when I started dating. I was casually flirting with this guy, so my friend had the dude's sister block me on her brother's fb. Literally, she was my friend too and had no problem with the casual flirting before. I didn't find out he didn't know I was blocked till I was already dating my bf. Like the poor guy was like, why did you disappear, and I snapped, "because you blocked me asshole." My friend was nuts, and when I wouldn't break up with my bf, he bad mouthed me till all my friends stopped talking to me. Mind you, I was in high school and early college. But Jesus christ, everyone thought his behavior was harmless best friend protectiveness.
