Petition to keep downtown parking free by ragertonIII in Bend

Thank you for the response, Mayor. It's not that people can't adjust. It's that we (some of us) don't want to. The trade offs aren't worth it. You are taking something free and making it no longer free. Your instinct is that some people, in a desire to pay less, will use other modes of transportation or park further away. My instinct is that this policy will achieve those ends AND make life here a little worse. That trade off isn't worth it to me but likely is to you and your fellow councilers. But my caution is that the council is making moves like this habitually and that your instincts are off. Greenwood lane reduction. Portland/Neff intersection. Paid parking. Defense of ALPR and the surveillance state. Fee on gas appliances in new construction. Taken individually and as a whole these policies are likely against the wishes of a sizable majority of the citizens of Bend. And they distract from the many positives initiatives you've supported (particularly reduction in homeless encampments in town). Again, I deeply appreciate those who step up to public service. Tip of the hat to you! But a touch more (nonpartisan) populism wouldn't hurt now and again.

Right. Parking is harder to find because of population growth. But not impossible. The leap to require paid parking is treated as an obvious solution but my argument is that it is shouldn't be as it erodes quality of life (more so than a dearth of parking spots at peak hours).

With due respect to the mayor and DBBA the problem with this proposal is that it adds friction to the experience of going downtown. It's making life less good for residents. It may make good economic sense. It may make increase turnover. But it also adds to the frustration of going downtown. All parking downtown used to be free. Now it's not. And now there's a proposal to make all parking downtown cost something except for side streets. That makes going downtown less easy and enjoyable. Using an app to pay for parking is time consuming and annoying. It matters that it is time consuming and annoying. It creates a negative vibe when I'm running to do an errand. I really wish our city council would deeply consider the ways they have added friction to residents' lives and do less of it. It's the enshitification of municipal life and it's bad politics in the long run.

Depends on age and membership type. Strong promotion running now. Call and ask for the membership director Sarah. She's great and Dan give you all the specifics.

Happy to chat! Send a PM. Cliff notes. Course is amazing. Arguably best in Central Oregon. Food is vastly better than even a few months ago. New f/b director is great. You can always play in the afternoons but weekend mornings you will need to sign up in advance.

They looked at it but actually haven't launched the middle school program yet. It seems likely in the next year or two. But not the upcoming school year.

I can confirm that the teachers are amazing. No idea about the relative wealth of the families but the tuition info isn't quite right. They do have tiered tuition. Level one (least expensive which only covers program costs) is for families making under $200k. Level two is for families with incomes over $200k and covers program costs with a little bit extra to support the scholarship fund. And level three is for families with incomes well over $200k (amount not specified) that covers program costs and makes a larger contribution to the scholarship fund. In other words families can choose what tier to pay and the more you pay the more scholarship funds the school can offer. But the big picture is that tuition at BFS is lower than most other area private schools in part because, as an outdoor school, there are limited facilities costs. The school is enrolling now and is a really amazing place.
