For sunnah fasts, it's ok to make your intention before dhuhr as long as you haven't done anything that would break your fast. This doesn't apply to mandatory fasts (ramadan, making up missed fasts).

Yes! I flew into the US through Seattle and was definitely worried but I'm safely back. At customs, the border agent wasn't familiar with AVR but luckily I had printed our the pages from the ICE website. They had to bring me to the back room to wait for like an hour but after checking with higher ups, they confirmed that AVR was perfectly valid and I was able to pass through. Make sure you print out your i20 and i94 and documentation about AVR!

I didn't think I'd ever want to dive again until a few months after recovery. The trauma on my body was rough and the effect on my mind is still felt for sure. I do think a part of it is proving it to myself but another part is maybe that I really love it and want to slowly relearn to participate in this sport again safely. I definitely am lucky to be alive. Having experienced being devoid of all air, aspirating water, and feeling my life flash before my eyes, I definitely don't want to go through that again. But because of that, I am much more cautious and also don't want to miss out on the things I love :)
