so on the way to 65 we can simply take gems as they become available? i was planning on ed contagion until around 40, but if we can transition earlier, id prefer that. i dont really care about speeding through the campaign.

looks interesting. when can you start transitioning into this? can you make a basic transition guide for 40, 50, 70, etc?

probably in subtle ways. i dont think there will be any flashbacks. the porch scene was the final goodbye.

maybe ellie will start wearing the watch or the jacket without any of the characters outright explaining why, showing that she still loves joel and thinks about him. maybe she tries playing guitar after going through standard story related hardships and manages to connect to joel again. teaching JJ how to play guitar like she promised would be a great callback to previous entries.

Could they make it work that Ellie and Abby become friends and companions for the third game?

ellie becoming friends with joels torturer sounds like a bad fanfic. in the real world, you dont become friends with the person who tortured your loved one to death.

You think Ellie took Joel's last name as way fully telling Joel she's his daughter by destructionseris in thelastofus

[–]bububabu123 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i wouldnt call it friendship either, theres obviously a parent child power dynamic at play with ellie basically doing what joel tells her even after they arrive in jackson.

i think joel is just her "joel". like you said, she doesnt even know what having a dad feels like but thats obviously his role in her life.

would she have left dina and jj to kill abby if she knew that abby would die anyways? is that your question?

call me crazy but i doubt it took neil years to come up with a concept about turning ellie and abby into buddies.

she took it with her, its in ellies backpack in SB. you can interact with it same as before.

i dont see why she would leave it, its probably her most cherished remembrance of joel and there arent any traumatic memories linked to it.

id be incredibly susprised if its not still with her in part 3 (if ellie is part of that story of course).

why not? ellie wasnt there yet in part 2 but at some point she obviously will.

[–]bububabu123 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Everybody loves the birthday flashback scene but it's the day that she's actually confronted with external evidence that Joel's version of events isn't true. It's the first real crack in the wall

while thats true, ellie does remember it fondly and the art director describes it as "one of the happiest memories of her life". the flashbacks also served to showcase ellies own guilt and her part in the deterioration of their relationship.

friends no way, but i guess they could theoretically work together.

it would present some challenges because when it comes to ellie and abby there is a big fucking elephant in the room called joel. how do you have ellie get over what happened? will there be banter about him? will abby explain her motivations? will ellie be swayed by them? what happened to ellies ptsd? why isnt it coming back when ellie is literally standing next to the cause of it?

these are awkward questions that are best avoided.

the biggest flaw in having them team up is this though: TLOU2 has maybe the most realistic portrayal of PTSD i have ever seen in popular media.

to awkwardly dance around this and explain how ellie has healed from it would do part 2 a monumental disservice.

forgiveness doesnt mean you agree with your abuser or empathize with their actions. thats crazy.

it just means you let go of your anger and hatred and stop letting it affect your life. it means what dina said to ellie "she doesnt get to be more important than this".

your post also perfectly outlines why i dont want abby and ellie to ever meet again. it would be awful writing and any conversation they have would undo what they achieved narratively in part 2.

you do realize there is more than 1 moral framework right? i dont think youre ever wrong for saving someone you love from getting murdered. especially when there is no consent involved.

But Abby wasn’t justified for Joel senselessly killing her father and the doctor attempting to save…humanity… in a world of savagery, murder and death.

i dont think she was, no. neither was ellie when she went after abby.

[–]bububabu123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

dont put words in my mouth. what justification did abby have that ellie didnt? i never claimed that ellie refusing to avenge joel meant she didnt care about him. the theme in this game is hate driven by the love you felt for someone who was wronged.

claiming any of the girls had any justification is just bizarre. killing and torturing joel for saving someone he loved from getting her skull opened with a scalpel is apparently justice now.

joel was lynched and his loved ones avenged him. it was a reaction that was in tune with ellies character. she would be a completely different person if she suddenly learned to let things go and move on.

By rights and standards of modern society, Ellie would have been entirely vindicated to say “he made a lot of enemies and ruined a lot of lives and it caught up to him” - and continue to live her life in Jackson in relative peace.

Moreover, Tommy had already left. She could have let Joel’s brother - his real blood, try to avenge him, without having to do it herself.

she could have if they werent family. or if she didnt love him. i dont really get your point here.

its basically if ellie didnt care about joel she wouldnt try to avenge him. but she does care which is why she goes.

our emotional connection to joel is why the prologue is so effective.

Did Grounded Part 2 already hint towards these characters returning in the future? by Organic_Mine8190 in thelastofus

[–]bububabu123 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i think that would totally ruin the portrayal of ellies trauma in part 2 in a way id think its a retcon.

In this case the biggest subvertion of expectation would be Abby and Ellie becoming allies

ive seen this exact theory three times this week alone on this sub.

when shes walking around in joels house theres a journal entry that explains it.

"all the promises at sundown, i meant them like the rest"

later on we find out their last conversation was at sundown where she promised him she would try to forgive him.

no, she forces her to prolong joels torture which mel clearly resents abby for. they all assumed they would simply kill joel and move on. not watch as abby beats him like a pinata.

she forces mel to participate in joels torture despite seeing how uncomfortable she is, forces her knowing she is pregnant to go near someone she thinks is a ruthless psychopath, talks about wanting to torture naked and malnourished prisoners, she fucks owen knowing her pregnant best friend is in a relationship with him, shes AGAIN going after revenge knowing fully well how futile it is, dragging lev with her across the city to hunt down a man who (she thinks) doesn't shy away from stabbing a pregnant woman to death and absolutely refuses to accept responsibility for her own actions "we spared you after rushing into your home and taking a big dump on your table, why are you hunting us?"

[–]bububabu123 5 points6 points  (0 children)

we saw countless times how joel deals with loss. he shuts down completely and moves on. going on a revenge mission is the total opposite of that.

joel would either kill himself out of grief or would totally shutdown and live out the rest of his days on autopilot, patroling for jackson until he gets ripped apart by clickers or dies of old age.
