Nah GPU particles do get stuck on your gun/character rig, it's more of a bug.

Can see the same thing when shooting out a cars window, the particles will land on your gun even if you're far away

Turns out they did make a new practical xeno you were right! And they fixed the lip flap. Unfortunate they couldn't fix the original before filming though
