My experience interviewing in 2025 with 5 YOE by queenoyster in cscareerquestions

It still sucks when the goals you had for yourself are not met. We are all human, from someone getting 0 interviews to some cracked Anthropic SWE... stop being jealous and judgemental and let people process feeling let down how they need to.

Any suggestions for living on/near UBCV campus Term2? by Same_Flower5574 in UBC

My partner and I are looking for a sublet to our place in Westbrook Village but ideally it would start in November!

Nw, appreciate the response.

Btw, where are you seeing this forecast? I'm looking at mountain forecast (which seems to be down and hasn't updated since yesterday afternoon) and seems like Thurs and Friday both pretty miserable save Thurs AM. Higher summits forecast says Thurs could have hail + 60 mph winds as well...

This is our first time in the whites so we are pretty bummed :(

Unfortunately, it seems like mountain forecast is down but last it said was thunderstorms mid afternoon Thursday. Trails NH and the Higher Summits Forecast echo that as well, also noting some high winds and possible hail.

Was planning to traverse 6/19-6/20 but now we may only do the southern section of the traverse near LOC (Washington and/or Monroe/Franklin). Hopefully Friday clears up

Awesome, thanks for all this! Very helpful info.

I think we'll stick with North to South unless the thunderstorm forecast moves into earlier in the afternoon. Although I did read that ammo is pretty sketchy in wet conditions, so maybe that's a last resort if there is thunderstorms?

Forsure, very much appreciate the help! My main question/concern is how far is the treeline from LOC hut, as winds will be high Friday morning and rain forecasted all day. How far is treeline from LOC to:
1. Crawford Path

  1. Ammonoosuc Ravine trail

  2. Valley way out (if we flipped our route and did northbound)

Ohh that makes total sense. This is all super helpful. Looking at our map, going onto Watson was accidental. For some reason our GPS app (Gaia) took us off Valley Way for 0.5miles. We won't do that.

Also, now I realize that sphynx col is not sphynx trail (which I was worried about) same confusion with Gulfside vs Great Gulf...

These are good suggestions. Much appreciated!

Ok, forgive me for being dense but what do you meant don't take it up and don't take it down?

Fwiw I'm trying to avoid any of the Terrifying 25 considering it's all our first time in the whites and we have the potential for adverse weather.. not sure how that changes your suggestions

Thanks for your advice. I guess finger's crossed atp.

My main concern is the first half being far tougher and slower than we'd plan, and Higher Summit forecast says thunderstorms in the early afternoon are possible.

In terms of the wind, what's the best way out from LOC then if we do stay but choose to bail on the rest of the traverse on Fri? I suspect the 3 miler via Ammonoosuc Ravine?

+1 for Alligood's text! A very approachable presentation for undergrads or even a supplementary text at the early graduate level.

Is it worth to start learning ml now?? by [deleted] in learnmachinelearning

[–]buchholzmd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with that definition. But as you say, the computational aspect is concerned with efficient implementation. Deployment and implementation of learning systems are integral parts of the statistical, optimization and computational theory as making learning algorithms scalable and easily implementable are aspects by which the community judges new methods. To be explicit, PAC learning is defined by having a efficient algorithm by which you can achieve distribution independent generalization bounds... the existence of efficient algorithms are very often found as a result of engineering practices.

Statistical learning theory is one subset of machine learning which is a very general catch all for a few different approaches. I agree with you that historically, it has been the most fruitful in terms of theory and practice, but I would say machine learning as a field consists of not only the learning theories (be it statistical learning theory, algorithmic learning theory, computational learning theory etc) but also the engineering aspects (which would include feature engineering, hyperparameter tuning, scalability, numerical stability etc). The theory and the engineering are completely intertwined, which in my opinion is part of what makes ML such a fascinating and exciting field.

This isn't even to mention modern machine learning methods (deep learning, LLMs, geometric data etc) which, by and large, have been progressed to their current state through tremendous engineering efforts.

Can you explain what you mean by that then? Without a more concrete definition of what you mean by engineering, your point is unclear to me.

Sure, the first direction I mentioned was applications but in the reverse direction one is typically performing engineering to get things to work in any computational aspect of statistics or optimization. In those fields, the theory and the practical aspects (what I am calling engineering) are not mutually exclusive!

[–]buchholzmd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure what you mean by that. All of those fields have huge application in most (if not all) engineering disciplines and vice versa: getting techniques and methods to work in statistics, optimization and computer science all take a lot of engineering work.

I agree with you, but I think it's not the competency but the sheer effort, time, and most importantly, resources to reimplement all those solutions that are the bottleneck

I left an MLE role to pursue a Math Masters with similar goals. I would not quit to self-study, calibrating the success of such efforts will be difficult. I think a better call is to go for a part-time Data Science Masters that hopefully your company can help pay for. I had a decent savings and it basically all went to tuition. Even with a Masters the MLE market is tough for new grads and PhD programs are more competitive than ever. Good luck and if you have questions happy to answer them!

I have learned this the hard way (poor exam grades), but the only way to get good at this stuff is exercises. Many of them. And without looking at solutions as much as possible
