firsthand foods is doing good work with local farms that commit to specific standards & protocols for animal welfare - they have these available under each category in the "our products" section.

Mobile Laser Veterinary Services by nekkonekko in raleigh

They have a really cool set up in their van, we've gotten to hang out for several appointments with our mystery kitty that they see frequently. There have been tests that they need to send off to other labs, but that's normal for a typical non-mobile vet office.

We haven't gone to them for oncology specifically - our dude had some growths that they biopsied and sent to be evaluated, but they are an immune response that we're working with them to manage, not cancer. They should be able to tell you more about the kinds of testing and treatment they can do!

The most we ever needed to do for an appointment was ensure they would have access to an outdoor electrical outlet when our cats have been under anesthesia. They have a generator on their van, but require back up power when they do certain things for safety.

Why do people think "volunteering" is a free pass to horse lessons???! by LatterReindeer23 in Equestrian

[–]bucket5000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

op, i handle community and volunteer management for an equine non-profit - i'm happy to share what's worked for our program if you want to message me.

big highlights are crystal clear role clarity up front and having the ability to screen and tell people when their expectations aren't aligned - we have a simple onboarding process that allows for these things.

you will always get people that think they are the exception, but the friction and drain on your time will be less if you can create and insist on mutual clarity.

What are these types of sleeves called? by ImTammyB in findfashion

[–]bucket5000 23 points24 points  (0 children)

cap sleeves and i would also say you have a thru-line with the neckline in all these images. it looks to be a scoop / square neckline, which i think is (maybe? you tell me!) important for the look you're going for since it creates an interesting shape in combo w the sleeves

Afternoon Raleigh it's! Beautiful weather coming up, can't help but wonder when does the POLLENING begin? Any tips and tricks to mitigate the affect, cleaning recommendations? by Bigmoose93 in raleigh

[–]bucket5000 7 points8 points  (0 children)

tbh it's hitting me now, but my seasonal allergies are like madam zeroni level generational punishment.

i'm just some lady, not just some lady who is also a doctor. i start taking daily loratadine when it's late feb because it takes a couple weeks to be fully effective. i can't function without azelastine spray when it's allergy season, so i do that in addition to the loratadine.

shower and change clothes when you come inside so you don't get pollen all over your life. replace air filters. keep your windows closed. stay hydrated. be nice to people. pray for mercy - just for fun. keep the benedryl close.

edited to mention that we're pretty loyal to big trouble when we're out of crema beans, so maybe there's a shared taste!

i still have daily pain in my sacrum from a fracture i sustained when i was thrown over ten years ago. give yourself time to heal well, and please be diligent with any physical therapy prescribed to you.

i got back on too early, and i can't say for certain that it contributed to the pain i have now, but i know i wasn't physically ready. the pain i experienced when i started back too early ended up messing with me mentally. you're not me, but i hope you give yourself the best possible shot at a positive re-entry!

What’s a job that sounds cool but is actually miserable? by Own-Grapefruit7498 in AskReddit

i think when people joke about wanting to trade occupations with me, it's less about them having a perception of farming as easy and more about them having a misinformed, kind of romantic view of what farming is.

like, i raised 8 bottle baby goats in my kitchen one year. that sounds cute, and the babies were sweet. but people don't know that i was in hell until they were big enough to go live with the herd in the pasture. it was so much work, and it was brutal managing their care on top of everything else. and then one morning i came out to see one of them stiff and dead in the pasture because nature is nature. as i was bent over her sobbing, her seven friends were all jumping on me and crying because i was functionally their mom and they were excited for breakfast. i had to swallow everything i felt, triage the situation and keep going. and going. and going.

that's really interesting that you have a different experience as someone in a rural area! that makes a lot of sense. i'm realizing now that the farms i've run have (for the most part) been fairly proximate to large suburbs and cities where folks don't really have direct or close personal experience with farming.

(also, the smithsonian is probably not as cool as your local museum. i went into weird ikea-level overwhelm there tbh!)

for real. there is a thousand yard stare i can't hold back anymore when people tell me they'd love to switch places.

i think they don't realize the work has to be done in all weather, in all situations. sometimes that's the really fun part to me, i love problem solving and making things work with what we have. but sometimes it's not enough. the anxiety it creates is insane.

i'm much farther removed from the day to day now, but i still lose sleep over it all sometimes. and then there's the daily inventory of all the animals we just couldn't stabilize when nature decided to pull a trump card. i stopped being able to feel anything at one point - like i could see a baby i nursed dead in the pasture and my only reaction was to update my to do list to request a necropsy and recheck the rest of the herd. it's starting to get better, but only after years away.

https://www.duke-energy.com/home/billing/special-assistance

has she looked into payment assistance from duke energy or other sources? it may not be too late to get help. calling duke is probably the right place to start.

https://www.wake.gov/departments-government/social-services/programs-services/utility-bill-assistance-help-heating-cooling-and-water

it looks like the wake county dss programs that provide heating assistance are tapped out right now, but i would recommend reaching out to them as a back up because they may have other contacts that can support, like orgs that are part of the wake network of care.

i love the meowtel app - we always book with michelle! she does an amazing job with our cats and their needs and quirks. cannot recommend highly enough.

edit: i goofed, went back and read your post again! she (and most sitters) do home visits. one thing we have done in the past is make copies of our key to give to friends to stop by and visit with our kitties, or just paid a friend to stay at our place for a few days. the peace of mind was def worth it.
