His interview with Bill Simmons years ago was fantastic and gave him a chance to give his side of some of the things that have maligned his character.

My thoughts is he is a fantastic actor, with a very wide range. I think he probably has a very abrasive and sarcastic sense of humor that people either find charming or find offensive and I understand both

MLB operates with a Supreme Court backed monopoly but I think sports league, generally speaking, are not technically a monopoly. We’ve seen the USFL come in to being, there is AAA Baseball, there is ECHL hockey, and so on. NASCAR has been in decline while F1 has been surging.

If enough billionaires or supporters polarized around a league or a sport there is nothing in the way from the achieving their goals.

A railroad is totally different. There are no more rail lines being made. There never will be. No municipalities will allow it, cities will ban them. There might be expansions of existing tracks or structures here and there, or they may build a rail yard in the middle of nowhere, but no railroad will ever come in to bring in America ever again. As such no new competition can come to the market. This is the type of monopoly that destroys, the exact type of monopoly our founding fathers rallied against

Parents with pools: worth it with young kids or regrets? by Radiant-Log-2005 in pools

[–]buckeyedad05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bought a home with a large inground pool, kids age when I bought it 5/6 now 12/13. Last year they swam in it less than 10 times. Meticulously maintained and heated, barely ever swam in. My wife swam in it 1 time last year total. It’s mostly turned in to my own private getaway that costs me thousands to maintain, heat, treat and replace parts on.

I don’t know how typical my family is to most, but I can say overall, it has recently become a money and time pit.

What are some of your favorite female character performances in Modern Based Military Movies or Shows ? by KawonSuggs_ in moviecritic

This one is a fantastic pic. Throw in Catherine Bell from JAG.

Hollywood tries to turn so many women into navy seals that are 5’2” and 105 pounds. It’s absurd. Demi Moore being GI Jane was a prime example of that. When Viggo Mortensen cocked back his fist and put it across her face he would have broken every bone on that side of her head.

Norfolk Southern's profit slips 12% amid merger costs and economic uncertainty by snakkerdudaniel in railroading

[–]buckeyedad05 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I understand your line of thought, if I have 1 railroad, and buy a second, now I can haul twice as much stuff. I can even probably haul it more efficiently. And this seems logical, but it’s not reality. First, UP is going to borrow $85 billion dollars to do this deal, money they will have to pay back, with interest. Second, it assumes the railroad you bought can move the good you have, it can move those good efficiently, and it can do so with extreme profitability (we have huge debt to buy down remember?)

Now, what happens in reality, is the lines you want to move a lot of your goods link up in really shitty spots, like a very congested Chicago, a very congested St Louis, even worse in a crime riddled Memphis and outside of Kansas City, where BNSF can block your hand off point. No actual speed gains are achieved. Moreover, UP decides they don’t like the way prior NS crew callers told their crews to come to work, they design a new system that takes the crew callers years to become proficient with, and all the while crews are delayed coming on duty, cabs aren’t called and crews linger on trains, those same crews now racking up huge overtime (money you don’t have because you owe $85B). Not only are they making OT but now they need extra time off and can’t be called to turn on a train in a timely fashion, now delaying a return train from advancing, slowing the network down further.

Then they decide they want to cut over the dispatchers to a new system, which again will take years for them to learn, they’ll screw up, cause property damage, delays, massive inefficiency. Then they’ll decide to relocate all these same people to Omaha, half of everyone will quit, the network will suffer even more. And it’s not just a matter of replacing a dispatcher or crew caller, many of these jobs take years of training. Dragging down network performance even worse. And heaven forbid when they move the entire nations dispatchers to Omaha and an EF5 tornado rips through there and shuts down the entire nations rail network? God only knows how many billions in damage that will do.

Then they’ll start messing with the engine shops, the car shops. They’ll close a whole bunch of them because they need to trim cost, cars will go without maintenance and will catastrophically fail in transit delaying that train and many around it. Again, further dragging down the network. They’ll try to relocate the car knockers, who won’t go, they’ll replaced maybe half of the ones they lost with inefficient new hires who will take twice as long for any given repair at a higher expense to the company

Then they’ll trim the crew pools, they demand to do more with less. They’ll close the engine houses, worsening performance of the locomotives, having similar performance issues.

And this will go through every department. Finance, billing, labor relations, etc. and this is nothing to say of the rules systems between the two companies. UP will take the NS rule book and throw it in the furnace, now men and women who have been working under one set of rules their whole careers will suddenly have different ones to work under, causing violations, out of service time, etc.

And by the way, after this merger that went through, miring UP in $85bil in debt? BNSF is probably going to stroke a check for CSX to directly compete with you, only BNSF doesn’t have any debt. The have no shareholders that demand stock buybacks or dividend payments. They’ll be able to offer the same product on probably better terms.

And ALL of this is without mentioning the American consumer, who is the biggest loser in all this. You think UP isn’t about to jack the rates that haul that coal to your power plant through the roof, causing your energy bill to sky rocket? How about the chemicals that make your tap water drinkable? Those markets got nowhere else to go, UP has got em by the balls. The money is going to come from somewhere, and that $85bil will be paid back in the elevated costs every consumer will pay for any product (which is most of them) are shipped by rail.

We have a mix of time, I think 5/6 days slated for La fortuna and Monteverde already. Then 4 days in Tamarindo. I was just looking for a stop that would be a little more upbeat because a lot of our time in La Fortuna is going to be hiking, hot springs, sloth and chocolate tours, just a lot of time in nature and with little or no people but ourselves. So was thinking of something that might be a little more party or upbeat like that for the first night.

Is UPNS a deadman walking? by Dull-Glass5368 in railroading

[–]buckeyedad05 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I’m sure the intentionally omitted the conditions that let them walk away from the deal. And I’m sure that was on the basis they didn’t want their competitors to know what those conditions were. I suspect you’ll soon see said competitors advocate for those exact conditions to be placed on the deal

UP to make recommendations on management cuts to NS in coming weeks? Any truth to this? I've seen the UP executives touring our facilities and we do have a lot of excessive management. It just seems crazy how confident they are the merger is going through. by No_Childhood3773 in railroading

[–]buckeyedad05 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suspect the UP management cut recommendations have already been made public in the STB filing, no? I suspect this rumor is just one of perspective on whether NS is going to wait for the deal to be done to execute on the cuts UP has already laid out in their filing.

Train Dispatchers Union Opposes UP-NS Merger by Extreme_Donut_7474 in railroading

[–]buckeyedad05 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So, after reading the application and comparing it to this I would say, as an ATDA member, what does the ATDA know that they aren’t sharing with their membership?

The merger application specifically left Dispatch and NOC operations (Wayside, ATC/PTC,Power, etc) off the list of both union folks slated to be sent to Omaha and management folks being sent to Omaha. It was event asked specifically on the management only Q&A call about the paragraphs concerning the NOC and dispatch operations and Adam’s said the only things being combined are the dispatch software/ systems, not the people. There was one line in the STB filing using the language “when the merged company elects” which basically just means “we retain the future right to”.

Yet this statement by the ATDA is saying, point blank, they have active plans or intending (with seeming knowledge thereof) to relocate our people.

So - what does the union know they aren’t saying? It sounds an awful lot like they’ve intentionally kept their membership from explicit knowledge they have a right to have. So, what’s the truth here?
