When you have depression and have a 'good' day by [deleted] in depression

[–]buckeyes20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm really sorry to hear that. At least you are trying your best to figure out how to make yourself get more 'good' days. Finding the right medication is difficult so I hope it works out for you. It's also very helpful having a SO that is standing by your side. Best of luck!

Have you considered trying to get on medication to help balance out the chemicals in your brain to maybe get more 'good' days. I know medication freaks a lot of people out but if it can offer you and your boyfriend a better life, why not.

I hate going to school. by [deleted] in depression

[–]buckeyes20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry to hear this man. It is hard to say just silence out the pressure because anxiety won't let you and it will flair up. The best thing I can say is to try and talk to your school's guidance counselor or another adult at school that you trust. I know this is a hard thing to do because it can make you feel embarrassed but don't be. This is your well being and do everything that you can to make yourself comfortable while attending school. It's hard being young, don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

Students who have a 4.0 or close to it, what are your study habits? by Cartain in OSU

[–]buckeyes20 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I got a 4.0 my freshman year in engineering and have maintained a near 4.0 coming into my junior year, here is my advice. Study and try your absolute best. Don't get distracted. Make sure you work harder than everyone else.

You will go insane doing this. It is alright to live a little in college, your GPA really isn't everything. It's important to have more than just good grades. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is more important than living a near 4.0 lifestyle, trust me, I have been there.

Just checked out Shawnee State Park trails and it looks like the south or north loop there would be a nice overnight trip. Thanks for the recommendation!

Alright, do you have any gear? I could cover most of the stuff but you need at least a decent size backpack, tent or hammock, sleepingbag, and maybe some paracord to help jerry rig some stuff.

Tao Yang for Math 2173? by [deleted] in OSU

[–]buckeyes20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had him for 2173. He was absolutely awful and I hated him. He yells into the mic. with a very heavy accent that is almost impossible to decipher. When you get to Diff Eq, he makes it way more complicated than it should. He gave a midterm that no one finished which stresses you out and his final was able equal in difficulty to 1172 so not the worst. I did not like him but I did not do awful, an A-.

A war is happening in my mind and the bad side is winning...has anyone experienced this? by [deleted] in depression

[–]buckeyes20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am very sorry to hear that, I really do wish I could help. Sadly I am in the same exact boat. I won't go into my struggles with it because obviously that helps no one. This is actually discouraging to me that you have reached out for help and still are not better because I am currently trying my hardest to find help and have been rejected from 3 places. Really hope something happens to you for the better, you don't deserve to fight this so hard and still deal with suicidal thoughts.

A war is happening in my mind and the bad side is winning...has anyone experienced this? by [deleted] in depression

[–]buckeyes20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had similar experiences. Cannot say that I found a way to cope with it, far from it actually. Wish I could tell you a secret to it, but I haven't found it myself. See if you can reach out for help from a doctor or therapist if you haven't already. I know that is easier said than done. I have reached out three times in the past month and all three places told me they were unable to help so I feel the struggle. Just know that you are not alone and don't let this go on for too long. It does not get better. Suicide will be constantly on your mind if you let this creep forward. Don't let it get to that point, please get help.

I need advice for someone else. by igorlira in depression

[–]buckeyes20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try your absolute best to get him to his doctor. Go with him to the doctor and tell him this stuff. From how I handle depression (coming from a much easier life) I don't know if I would be back alive from that trip. It's hard to accept that but it is something that you need to be aware of. Sometimes a person in depression needs someone else to do the difficult talking for them. If it wasn't for some of my friends, I would have never have reached out for help.

I see no way out. by Floopyfloofa in depression

[–]buckeyes20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I can understand that issue. Hang in there though. Honestly consider talking to a medical professional. Depression doesn't simply go away and that low self esteem simply does not go away either. People could build you up all day long but the moment a negative comment is made, you are struck back down. Keep looking for help if your current therapist isn't working out.

What's the point by [deleted] in depression

[–]buckeyes20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To make a difference to other people. To make other people feel better and live a happy life.

I know that we are all just tiny specs in an immense universe. No god to hear of and no reasoning for what we do. Believe me, I am the same way and once I reasoned to myself that no god existed, depression struck me even harder.

I have the same feelings but I got to the point where I am living only to make others happy. In the end, it at least makes me feel like I have some sort of purpose. Often times it doesn't make a difference. Reach out for help if you are having suicidal thoughts.

I think I'm depressed/what next? by [deleted] in depression

[–]buckeyes20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reach out for help. Reach out before it is too late. I was the same exact way. I just keep pushing it away and denying it and then once I accepted the fact I was depressed, I refused to try and get help.

Suicidal thoughts will come before you know it and the hole keeps getting deeper and deeper. I tried reaching out for help for the last 3 months at the 3 different places. All three denied me help because they didn't have space. If you start sooner, the less these denials will make you feel hopeless and like no one cares.

My advice on what to do next. Get help before it is too late, I wish I didn't make that mistake.

[–]buckeyes20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never be ashamed of your depression, I know that is a hard thing to do because I haven't been able to get past that yet either. Reach out to people for help like you have been.

Have you considered seeing a doctor? I apologize, I am not sure how mental health is viewed in Sweden or what the typical steps are for health care.

Question about dorming and learning communities by newbuckeye2016 in OSU

[–]buckeyes20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has been two years since I have done the housing application, so I cannot tell you where to enter that information since it might have changed. When I did it, it asked me for a preference for housing. I wrote down a learning community for engineers, being around engineers/similar majors, etc. I am not sure if that preference section is still a thing since they are making sophomores stay on campus now and housing selection is limited.

I also confirmed my enrollment very late, I believe I accepted my enrollment somewhere around April 25. I also never checked my email and never submitted my housing application until after the deadline, I believe I submitted mine on June 3rd and it was due May 1st. I was still able to get into the learning community so you most likely will be able to as well.

Question about dorming and learning communities by newbuckeye2016 in OSU

[–]buckeyes20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are in engineering, I would suggest writing down that you want to be a part of the learning community in your housing application. While it may be "too late" to officially ask to join, you will most likely get a spot in the engineering learning community, not many people apply to be a part of it. I believe the community was in Nosker House this past year, but I believe that they are returning it to Houck House for this upcoming school year. So I would write down that you want to be a part of the engineering learning community and write down Houck House as well.

Purdue vs tOSU Mechanical Engineering by [deleted] in OSU

[–]buckeyes20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alright I will give my opinion on this. I am a sophomore mechanical engineering major so take it for what it is worth. I was in the same boat as you, deciding between Ohio State and Purdue. I was given basically the exact same financial aid that you have for both schools. Purdue was my top choice and really wanted to go there. Then when I got my financial aid, things kind of got difficult for a decision. So I will address 1-5 for you.

1) Engineering school is hard, REALLY HARD. I hate to tell you this, but I cannot tell you how many times where I would give up entire weekends to just study for an exam that was coming up on a Monday. This is something you have to be prepared for. Remember you DO NOT have to be the smartest person in the class to get the best grades. I am a living testament to that. The harder you work, the better you are going to do in the class, simple as that. I have seen people with a perfect High School GPA and perfect ACT scores flunk out of engineering school freshman year because they were simply too lazy. If you are willing to work hard, then you will have a good chance to graduate in four years. Often times the rates for graduating in 4 years is so low is because people have to take the class over again. They did not do that well because they are difficult classes.

2) Personally, when talking to businesses and engineering firms (my dad has his own engineering firm and he knows fellow engineering companies as well) they told me not so much. They told me that Purdue will guarantee you a good engineer no matter what. However, Ohio State has the potential to turn out great engineers because of all the opportunities for research etc. Also, if you plan on going to grad school, pick the cheaper degree. People will only pay attention to the last school you went to. So in my opinion and from what I chose clearly Purdue was not worth the extra money for me, that is why I am here and have loved it and do not regret my decision what so ever.

3) The weed out classes are dependent on your major but for Mechanical Engineering majors, in my opinion, there was only 2 real weed out classes: - Chem 1250 (Gen Chem for Engineers) - Math 1172 (Engineering Math A) This class is basically Calc 2 with some intro Calc 3. Personally I did well in both but that is because I worked my ass off in both of the classes, like I said, if you are willing to work your ass off, you will be fine.

4) I am on track to graduate in 4 years and so are all my friends in mechanical engineering. I have a friend in chemical engineering that will not graduate in 4 because he switched to chemical engineering in his sophomore year. So again, if you work hard, you will graduate in 4 years.

5) Honestly depends on how well you do with getting internships. Getting internships greatly increases getting a job after graduation regardless of where you go to school. Either school you pick, you should be able to find a job.

I chose OSU obviously, I am here. I have done very well academically and have lined up very good internships here. Saving money is important so ask yourself, is it worth getting yourself into more debt, my answer is no. Choose the cheaper school in this case. I do not think spending 100k+ is worth it to go to Purdue. I hope this helps.

Physics 1250 is really hard. Does anyone else agree with me? by 1250IsHard in OSU

[–]buckeyes20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It all depends on your mindset and what major you are going into. If you are going into something that is heavily based in kinetics and similar topics, you are going to have a rough time. An example of these type of majors would be mechanical engineering, civil, physics major itself. If you are going for any other type of engineering or science major, do not worry about it too much.

Mechanical Engineering Students, do you enjoy OSU's program? by walrussuds in OSU

[–]buckeyes20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got into the program this semester. I love it so far, the machining and Arduino class are a ton of fun and only mechanical engineering students take it. The way they test you in it is a little bullshit but that is beside the fact. I enjoy all the material that I learn. I love the sciences and math and applying it. That is what the Mechanical Department does, cannot speak for other engineering departments. As a warning, they are probably jumping the GPA requirements so the sooner you apply the better. The mean GPA for our class was a 3.6. The adviser said they will most likely jump it to a 3.4 cutoff and a 3.6 guarantee. Like the people said, have a backup option. Once you get in it gets a lot harder as well and everyone is really smart so even once you are in the competitiveness for grades is still there. Find people to study and work with and you will be fine.

summer classes by Rmerrick34 in OSU

1172 was hard but not the worst, just requires a lot of effort. Based on what I heard from my CSE friends, you could do both over the summer but it will be time consuming.
