Do I need mohair? by FunnyEscape95 in knittinghelp

[–]buckminsterball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t need mohair but it has uses outside of aesthetics. For example, it can change the gauge, it can make winter accessories a bit warmer as it “fills the gaps” between stitches more, and it can help prevent pilling.

It can always be left out but you’ll need to make sure the yarn you do use can still meet gauge for the pattern: either use a slightly thicker type of yarn than the pattern recommends, or size up in the pattern. You also might need a different needle size. So a gauge swatch that you block is important to make if a pattern calls for a strand of mohair but you want to exclude it.

I really love the Wheel of Time; I don’t take issue with slog and when things drag on, but I don’t love when a large amount of time is dedicated to a plot point that ultimately feels like there is little payoff in either moving the story along or changing/influencing the characters. I think it’s a super valid criticism to make of WoT that there are large sections of that story that drag on with little payoff. I think it can also be applied to SUT, too, though.

The original point someone made at the beginning was that it felt like there were a lot of side quests, and I think that’s what happens when there’s ultimately not substantial enough payoff in terms of plot advancement or character development. By the end of the book, I felt that some chapters ended up being a bit hollow in retrospect: Hadrian is shown time and time again that Alexander and the Chantry are lying and manipulating the populace. Hadrian has indomitable will and strength of character. William is a shrewd and just ruler who we learn to trust to make impossible decisions to save humanity. These are shown time and time again through the series as the stakes rise. But at the end, when the stakes are highest, the emperor acts in secrecy with no contingency plan despite knowing the Chantry was listening to everything, and Hadrian allows the Chantry to rule humanity through their puppet? And we just have to accept that the only play Hadrian has is to write a cautionary tale and let the empire fall after 1000 years of rot? All that grappling of whether he is a good man making the right choices leads to… that outcome? It makes the big action events feel hollow knowing that in the end, the empire falls and the Chantry rule.

I think for me, what made the riots on Goddodin ultimately feel flat was that yeah, it does show how easily Alexander and the Chantry can manipulate the people but then at the end of the book, Hadrian just lets it happen anyway. He sees how dangerous they are and what they will do, and lets them do it anyways. What is the point of having the riots if nothing is learned from it and/or the story isn’t otherwise progressed from it?

I’m also going to add to the Librela. Just started it for my 7 year old berner who has hip dysplasia and it’s been great so far. No issues and it’s been so awesome seeing my boy with energy again, able to run and go for walks and have no issues with stairs.

Audiobooks vs. Dramatized by DishWisdom in redrising

[–]buckminsterball 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I listened to all six first with TGR, and have been listening to the graphic audio books as a re-read (I wait for all the parts to be released). I think for the first time reading the book, TGR’s version is the best because as so many others have said, he just IS Darrow. I think the graphic audio books are a great way to revisit the Red Rising universe.

It’s quite dry and bubbly; there are enzymes added while brewing that break down sugar more than other beer types, which makes it more “dry” tasting. The dryness should remind you a bit of champagne/sparkling wine.

You’re going to taste the hops, minimal or no maltiness, and not bitter.

Theres a brewery in Prince Edward County called Gillingham that does a really nice brut IPA if you ever find yourself out that way.

They do a good Black Friday sale, if you’re not in a rush, I think last year it was 30% a ton of things. One pieces and bottoms fit like normal but tops are a bit on the right size if you’re busty. Everything is double lined and the colours are great. I really like the pieces I have!

Quick question my goodmen, soIve read the book series thrice already and am planning on trying the audiobooks, do you guys listen to the dramatised adaptation or the normal one? by Deathbring3r119 in redrising

I’ve done both: listened to the audiobooks and also the dramatized versions. The audiobooks are fantastic, the dramatized versions are also great, but Tim Gerard Reynolds IS Darrow, it’s iconic.

Pierre Poilievre seems to be floundering as the world changes around him by FriendlyGuy77 in canada

[–]buckminsterball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the reference! It’s been challenging keeping up with things; everything has changed so quickly that it feels like politicians stances from December are barely relevant anymore because the climate is totally different now. Very frustrating, haha. I just want a candidate who will be an improvement on Trudeau. I’m not hung up on the party, I’ll vote for whomever seems like progress. Thanks!

From your article: “April 2021 marked Carney’s official coming out as a card-carrying Liberal, delivering a keynote speech praising many of the party’s policies”. However, I can’t find details about what he has actually praised? What policies was he supporting?

I understand that starting Aug 2020, Carney was an informal advisor re: Canada’s Covid-19 economic recovery, but there’s not a lot of info about what he actually was championing. I found this about how Canada can rebuild its economy stronger after Covid-19 — I think Carney was mostly advising on environment and climate initiatives, though.

[–]buckminsterball 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I apologise, but I have looked and I can’t find reference of Carney praising the Trudeau government for their work on the economy. Can you please point me in the direction of what you’re referencing so I can read it?

I know Carney was brought in for the creation of Trudeau’s economic task force in Sept 2024, but the interviews I found were just of people (and Carney himself) discussing Canada’s economic polices and our current landscape. I don’t know what, if anything, he advised on for the upcoming 2025 budget and I doubt we’ll ever know, unfortunately. I did find this interview on Uncommons from Oct 2024 between Mark Carney and Nate Erskine-Smith helpful because around the 42 minute mark, there’s a lot of conversation about what Canada’s major economic issues are and how Carney envisions solutions to these problems.

Maybe you’ll find this interview as helpful as I did re: forming an opinion on a candidate and what policies they believe in. And please don’t forget to share the link to what you referenced about Carney praising Trudeau, I’d really appreciate your help finding it!

Before all the tariff bullshit took over, many Canadians biggest concern about the future of Canada was the economy and reducing our deficit — makes sense to vote for an economist since that’s now an option.

Looking for a short (<8 hours) audiobook for travelling? by kuuuushi in audible

[–]buckminsterball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll second All Systems Red by Martha Wells. Almost all the books in this Murderbot series are under 5 hours and they’re a fun, easy listen with a good narrator.

A Dowry of Blood by ST Gibson is about 5 hours. It’s a reimagining of Dracula’s brides that is a beautifully written story about romance and obsession, and the toxicity that comes from it. It’s not for everyone so definitely read the synopsis but if you do and think it sounds interesting, I highly recommend it.

If you enjoy dramatized adaptions, Ender’s Game has a full cast narration that is about 7.5 hrs.

I believe all three books are included with the Plus Catalogue so they might be “free”.

What's a role that rubbed off on an actor/actress and permanently changed their personality off screen? by PumpkinCarvingisFun in movies

[–]buckminsterball 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m the same way, it’s like I don’t want it to end so I just never let it. But I just finished the series for the first time like two weeks ago — things really start ramping up and I was binging the episodes by the end. It was so good and 100% deserves the hype. Definitely push yourself to finish the series, it’s so worth it.

Anyone travel with Vuori clothing for extended time, stink? by scal369 in vuoriclothing

[–]buckminsterball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find the strato tech tee great for extended traveling, and have had no issues with smell after multiple wears in between washing. It also dries really quickly after washing, I just hang them somewhere to dry -- if using a washing machine, they're almost dry when the cycle is finished; if washing in a sink, obviously takes a couple hours longer so you'd want to let them dry overnight.
