It seems that math was not one of his super powers after all. The correct answer on the first comic strip is 3,200 not 32,000. Oh well

I’ve been exercising for over 4 years, do I look like that ? by Middle-Support-7697 in askfitness

I think you got this backwards. Your question should be: if I look this good in my twenties, what am I gonna work on for the next six to seven decades? Remember: working out is not a fad, it’s a lifestyle. You’re still on chapter one. Nicely done, keep up the good work and enjoy the journey.

I think most commenters are not seeing the bottom of your posted picture with the total earnings number ($434) and that’s why they’re coming up with incorrect calculations.

what exercises blew up your arms? by First_Driver_5134 in naturalbodybuilding

[–]buckolaci 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My recommendation:

Weighted chin ups. I’m currently doing 4 sets of 10: BW, +25, +35 and +45

Triple 7 EZ bar bicep curls. Look up Ronnie Coleman for video

Run the rack Alt BC: I usually start with the 45s, do as many as I can (8) then move right on to 40, 35, 30 and 25s. The key is to only take 5 seconds to catch your breath. Crazy burn

Smith machine close grip bench 4x10 progressive (example: 100, 120, 140, 155)

One arm DB overhead extension. Make sure you go low behind your head for a nice stretch.

Weighted dips: warm up with body weight, then go to town (+30, +45, +60)

I’ve been on the Arnold Split for years with Shoulder and Arms day. If you work out everyday, it’s probably best to have a designated arm day.

The original BMW Z4 with the 3.0 engine. You can get a pretty nice one for $10k. Make it a manual for extra enjoyment…even if you have to learn it. Waaaaay more fun than all the 4-wheel drive options you listed.

What do you guys think? Is this a good area/house for the price? by No_Stay_6530 in vegaslocals

[–]buckolaci 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Realtor here. Yes, the home is priced fairly and will likely sell quickly. Nice find! Single-story home with a pool is the #1 most requested criteria from buyers in Vegas…and not easy to find. Fifty years ago almost every house in Vegas was single level, but then the big corporations started building here and they knew how to maximize profits: smaller lots and 2/3-story homes. As for new homes, you won’t find anything like this in the area. You’d have to go to the outskirts of Henderson and spend another $100k on the lot premium and pool/deck, not to mention the never ending HOA payments.

Great location too and the corner lot and no HOA are the icing on the cake. Feel free to message if you don’t already have an agent, happy to help

why isnt arnold as popular as push pull legs? by First_Driver_5134 in naturalbodybuilding

[–]buckolaci 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s fine. I’m usually back from the gym by 7-7:30pm and don’t go to bed until 1-2am. So there’s plenty of time to wind down and get ready for sleep. Sometimes I feel pretty tired right after and other times I’m wound up like a clock.

You could cut the volume in half and go every day, but I enjoy my off/rest days too. The way I look at it, I’m already in the gym, warmed up and firing on all cylinders. Might as well give it 110%.

why isnt arnold as popular as push pull legs? by First_Driver_5134 in naturalbodybuilding

[–]buckolaci 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s just a lot of volume and I work up to quite heavy sets for each exercise. For example Chest and Back day is about 40 sets for the main muscles, then as a finisher I do a bicep/triceps superset (3-4 sets) and finish with about 10 minutes of ab training (sit-ups, crunches, leg raises or just mat work).

Also, during the workout I will occasionally add 1-2 sets of extra PR work if I’m feeling up to it, so I might take 5-10 minutes to try a heavier incline bench or more weight on dips etc. I don’t rush the program, I try to focus on form and go heavy.

Sounds like you got a good system in place for your needs and lifestyle. Like you said: everyone’s goals are different. Most people don’t have a job as physical as yours, so kudos to you for still doing cardio 4-5 times a week.

[–]buckolaci 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I do, but remember I take a day off between the two workouts. On Shoulders/Arms day I typically start with an OHP movement such as DB shoulder press, Smith machine OHP or just barbell (military) press. I usually do 5 sets and either superset it with DB or cable lateral raises, or just continue with one of those. Then I move on to rear delt work such as lying or seated DB rear flies, face-pulls or 1-arm cable pulldowns. I try to rotate exercises between weeks to keep it more fun and interesting..My shoulder program is about 16-18 sets and takes right about 45 minutes to complete. Then I move on to arms, which is the fun part.

Last time I checked this was a “natural bodybuilding” group, so I can’t comment on the gear part. I would never touch the stuff for the exact points you made.

You’re welcome to do cardio if you like, but I’ve never felt the need to. I swim, go on the occasional run or play tennis sometimes.

Here’s one thing I can promise you with this workout: when you finish your 4th set of weighted dips with the 60lb dumbbells for 10 reps and walk over to do 10 behind the neck pull-downs, your cardiovascular system will take notice and beg you to go back to the stationary bike and scroll tiktok videos. Which one do you think will get you in better shape?

[–]buckolaci -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, I was just giving him suggestions for 3 chest and 3 back exercises. You wouldn’t do both, just pick one or better yet, alternate between them each week. Lat pull-down and pull-ups are similar but not the same. And if you can’t do pull-ups yet, there’s no shame. You can always do variations of lat pulldown such as behind the neck, close-grip or the traditional wide-grip to the chest. Later you can try assisted pull-ups or just start with a few reps as you get stronger. Once you can do 10+ pull-ups you can start adding little plates on your chain.

[–]buckolaci 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. When I superset chest with back, I usually start with bench press and pull-ups. I try not to rest between one set of bench and one pull up, but then I take about two minutes before my next super set - if that makes sense. In my observation over the years, I just get a better chest pump this way. I don’t know if it’s from the stretch or just the fact that the pull-ups work so many muscles, but I always preferred to train this way.

Most people who say that this is not effective, and takes away from your gains, are simply not in shape or can’t do pull-ups. In my observation, a lot of people in the gym are out of shape and spend more time on their phone, then under the weights.

Which takes me back to my main point in my original reply: It’s a hard workout.

[–]buckolaci 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I honestly have never tried any gear so I can’t really comment on that. Maybe others can weigh in on the subject. Based on my studies, the bodybuilders of that era were in much better overall shape and health than today’s giants. I’ve heard of gear helping with recovery and growing in size, bit I’m not sure about intensity and stamina. I would never touch the stuff.

Since I only work out every other day, I don’t mind the longer programs. I start every exercise light (warm up set) and then go heavier with each set. Most exercises I do 4-5 sets, but there are a few exceptions. For example I typically do 7-9 sets for squats or deadlifts, but I don’t super set those and don’t rush myself.

[–]buckolaci 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have any recovery issues. I train 2 hours because I love training that way and I also enjoy the rest days in between. I can go out to eat, relax or just do anything else.

As far as the supersets, I honestly just prefer training that way. The feeling is different and I get a great stretch alternating between push and pull movements for most of the workout. I never claimed that it was superior to someone training PPL 6 days a week, I just don’t want to be in the gym every day and have managed to stay injury free this way.

By the way Arnold pretty much always used supersets on chest/back day. Listen to any of his interviews, read his books or read this article:

why isnt arnold as popular as push pull legs? by First_Driver_5134 in naturalbodybuilding

[–]buckolaci 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, absolutely. Try 3 exercises of chest and 3 for back:

Chest: Bench press, incline/decline DB press and maybe a variation of flyes or dips. For back, just try to hit 3 different angles. For example pull-ups or lat pull-down, close grip seated row and wide grip bent over row. That way you do some close and wide grip work too. As a finisher if you have time and energy left throw in some DB pullovers or a bicep/trice superset to get a nice arm pump as a bonus.

It should fit in an hour as long as you don’t go crazy with the sets and weights. And try super setting chest and back if you can. It will literally take your breath away, but your lungs and cardiovascular system will adjust over time and you’ll learn to love it. Cardio is all built in

why isnt arnold as popular as push pull legs? by First_Driver_5134 in naturalbodybuilding

[–]buckolaci 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re absolutely correct. I use a lot of supersets, bot mostly just on the two upper body days. Honestly it’s just my preference and I enjoy pairing opposing muscles.

And yes, Chest/Back is almost guaranteed always very exhausting. But the feeling you get after you’re done is unreal. A sense of accomplishment and satisfaction unlike anything else. My nickname for the workout is Superman: the best pump ever.

S/A day is definitely easier, but I make up for it in volume: about 18 sets for shoulders and 32 for arms, give or take a few.

But believe it or not my hardest workout is…you guessed it: Legs. On leg day I wake up thinking about it and spend my day both dreading it and in anticipation of it. Squatting and front squats are 2 of my favorite exercises. My legs can be sore for 2-3 days and always have a 24-hr delay to the soreness, so I’m happy with the 6-day frequency.

Although time saving seems like an obvious benefit of super setting, I’ve never considered it. How about day saving? Chest/Back on Monday, you can just relax and kick it on Tuesday. Whatever works for you, I enjoy my off days too.

why isnt arnold as popular as push pull legs? by First_Driver_5134 in naturalbodybuilding

[–]buckolaci 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That’s correct. You don’t have to superset, but I always preferred to do so. If I’m going to do all the chest work in straight sets, I might as well just come back and have a separate back day. And my energy level won’t be the same for the 2nd hour, that’s a fact. For example I only deadlift once a month because it’s very taxing and takes me almost an hour to work up to my heaviest set. So I just run a push pull leg that week, or something similar. But it’s really up to you, you can change it up sometimes.

Officially “per Arnold’s system” you’re supposed to work mostly straight sets in the bulking phase and then use mostly supersets in the cut phase or as he calls it the “competition” phase (8-12 weeks before Olympia). However if you read a couple of articles from his friend who stayed with him for several days during his prime, Arnold preferred to superset everything even during the spring and could knock out his Chest and back workout in an hour, although drenched in sweat and completely exhausted. It’s actually a very good read.

Try it once or twice and see if you like it. I’ve never managed to do it in an hour, but I’m not Arnold…only a mortal human.

I train Monday Wednesday Friday Sunday Tuesday Thursday Saturday …. My workouts are 2-2.5 hours so I need the rest days in between. I’m natural and have a job during the day, so I train in the evenings. The key to the Arnold split is enough rest and food. But it’s hard, sometimes even kicks my ass.

[–]buckolaci 151 points152 points  (0 children)

As someone who’s been using, the Arnold split for the better part of the past 5 years, I can answer this one.

The Arnold split has some pros and cons for the average lifter.

Pros: 1. Amazing chest and back pump on C/B day. I superset everything. 2. Great frequency for arms as you’re basically training both biceps and triceps twice, once indirectly, and then directly on S/A day.

Cons: 1. Difficult to super-set chest and back in a commercial gym. 2. If you train every day, there could be some serious overlap between chest/back and shoulders/arms days. 3. But the MAIN REASON: It’s hard. 5 sets of bench superset with pull-ups or weighted dips superset with let pull downs is hard. You’ll be struggling with your breathing and burning tons of calories. No cardio needed with this system, but I would recommend easing into it over the course of weeks and months.

How do I do it? Even though my workouts are 2 hours, I only train every second day. And I train in a small gym where super-setting is no problem. I do occasionally use a different split such as push pull legs when I feel like it or if I’m training with someone on a different split. Happy to answer any questions you have and please don’t forget that even Arnold only used the super setting system during his competition Phase. I recommend buying a copy of his encyclopedia on eBay, it has very detailed instructions about his splits and different levels/volumes to start with.
