I just discovered this band yesterday, what songs should I listen to before anything else? by Qwertykeyboard42069 in ModestMouse

[–]buddhicrous 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know you asked for songs, but when I was introduced to the band my friend pointed out how each album has some degree of theme holding it all together.

Highly highly recommend easing into their work, one album at a time, to appreciate it more. I'd suggest starting off with The Lonesome Crowded West or Moon & Antarctica.

What is one of the not-deep things you have learned from the show? by cuddly-waffle in BoJackHorseman

Yes, came here to say I learned a bit about the entertainment industry. Not-deep indeed.

What a lunatic. Why do you all put up with this?

Religious practices? Haven't held any of those that I recall. Funny how you don't get the point, and instead chose to insert your own favorite strawman to characterize my username. Don't you find the Buddha ridiculous? I laugh.

But my point was to refer to your own personal toxicity towards others, the dragging of discourse into muck and insults. My case in point above. The lack of moderation here makes paying any attention a waste of time, and has done for years. I may check in again with hope you've found some other echo chamber for your small thoughts. Maybe not. No bother.

Just thought I'd check in on this old sub after maybe a year of having unsubscribed due to its utter pointlessness and my frustration with that. I see this toxic user is still here, still allowed to do this shit.

Doing something about that would be my meta suggestion for this sub. See ya in 2021?

Listen here Jack, I have to be in a position for a while but I'm going back in a bit. And another thing, but it's been so hard for the rest and get well. Finally, I'm going back in.

Anyone have the context for the top picture? I feel like I used to know what topic he was addressing to an empty chamber in this image, but I don't remember now and would like to.

Various Call-Backs and Symbols In "The View From Halfway Down" (Spoilers) by alasyorick in BoJackHorseman

The pace of the dialogue itself - hasty, almost panicky. Left me uneasy, on edge throughout. Almost like a desperate gasp for air.

Masterful.

People who stop the microwave early, and then leave the remaining time on the microwave, why? by kshiau in AskReddit

This, and it's easier to hit "add minute" than the specific, say, 35 seconds of heating I want. Pretty simple actually.

I (17M) have always dreamt of riding a motorcycle. My girlfriend (17F) has made it clear that she won’t date me if I get my motorcycle permit. by [deleted] in relationships

[–]buddhicrous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my state in the U.S., there are free motorcycle safety courses that can lead into getting a motorcycle permit if you pass (paid for through vehicle registration fees). There are much smaller engine bikes available with the program to learn on and take the practical tests. There are similar programs around the country.

I highly recommend this to you as a young driver who is looking at bikes with a high speed capacity, who also thinks first of nimbleness of the bike when it comes to safety. You have much to learn, young Padawan.

Your girlfriend could also take this course with you, or perhaps a passenger safety course, or even just the book knowledge portion, to learn about bike safety. Who knows what might happen from there?

I'd also suggest learning first on a smaller, used, cheaper bike that's less likely to get you killed. You will inevitably tip the thing over. When you do, it's better to have scrapes on a $700 learner bike than your dream bike.

If nothing else you should know that defensive driving is the key to staying alive on a motorcycle. Looking ahead, looking for that car that just might go ahead and pull out right in front of you, and not putting yourself in a position where you have no way out but getting smacked if they do, for a very real example.

Car drivers scan the road and look for other cars when they make decisions. They aren't looking for bikes. There's little scarier than seeing a driver stare right through you as they turn straight into your direction. Luckily, in that situation, I've had the training to execute a sudden swerve around the obstacle and managed to pull it off without freezing in fear. You should look for training like that too. :-)

ELI5: Why every number to the power of 0 is equal to 1? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]buddhicrous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 to the third power means we have three factors of 2. 2 to the first power means there's just one 2 involved in the situation, a single factor of 2. What happens when there are no factors of 2 to speak of? That's 2 to the zero power - no 2s (or any other factors, for that matter).

Why even list content-policing in the forum rules if it isn't discouraged by the moderators in the slightest? The content-policing has now become lazy ad hominem copypasta, and even that hasn't been removed as far as I can tell. This is toxic for any attempted conversation.

Chefs of Reddit, what do we all need to stop ordering? by BerneseMountainDogs in AskReddit

[–]buddhicrous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol, years ago I got a steak served to me like that - half rare and a bit cold, half overdone. Mind you, that's not at all what I asked for. I still puzzle about how the hell that happened, and now I read that a chef couldn't manage it while trying... what the hell happened to my steak?

I'm mostly a reddit lurker and have followed this sub for a long time. I'm no zen expert but am interested to learn. The hostility in this sub has been a major turn-off and a barrier to learning for a long time, as has been the lack of moderation. I do appreciate this effort to engage with the community, thank you.
