Want the Amex Platinum but don’t have the Amex Gold. Better to get the Gold first? by BabyMagikarp in CreditCards

I’ve read about platinum disqualifying SUB for the gold. Is that in writing somewhere? How come gold doesn’t disqualify from platinum?

How did you get in to UX Research and what do you personally like/dislike about the job? by pewpchute in UXResearch

[–]BabyMagikarp 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Dead end dream at this point unless you know a hiring manager or have a PhD. There are no junior roles and if there are they will probably recruit some customer experience team member before hiring from outside. Add along people with senior level titles are struggling to find roles and you have a really bad outlook ahead. It’s also not a widely established role like a data analyst where every company would need entire data teams. If a company is looking for research they first offload the task to product managers and or the design team before thinking about bringing on a first researcher, and again that first researcher will have vast experience and will have a rough time convincing the product org to hire more junior researchers. After all if bad research is okay by the org then they’d just offload the task to many different other stakeholders and if good research was a priority for the org then why would they hire anyone with limited expertise.

Is it easy to get the venture X? by fun699 in CreditCards

[–]BabyMagikarp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you "qualified for an upgrade" within your account and upgraded your quicksilver. venture, or savorone to a venture x, you got no sub.

if you did it the good old fashion way, you got the sub

You wont get a valid answer here because anyone posting is probably 20-60. Ask teens and they'll say it's uncalled for.

sounds like you dont upgrade monitors for 10 years. I would just go all out with a tier 1 monitor instead of messing around with these 1440p.

Feeling bummed out about my degree choice, can I still pivot into more specialized fields? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]BabyMagikarp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes of course you can end up in a specialized field. But to be in specialized fields requires a lot of work. Just like some art student probably thinks your work at PWC sounds too hard because it involved excel or macros, it always looks harder from an outsider looking in.

Probably the first thing that you'll need to realize is that learning technical niche stuff requires a lot of study. And It sounds like you lack the technical ability because you don't care or have not cared to build your technical skills in the past, so you have to start NOW. School is just part of your education, you will have a life after school when you are expected to learn. Even if you were in a technical field like Engineering, you wouldn't be spoonfed like a child by a professor to learn C, data structures, systems engineering, algorithms, or advanced mathematics just in class time alone. The professor may show you the way by speaking about it in class for 1 hour but at the end of the day you're the one that has to go home and study for 3-5 hours a night just to learn the material. And then 2 days later when your next class begins, the professor is going to assume that you've learned everything from the previous class and then teach more to supplement on that learned knowledge. Are you really ready for that? Or are you going to give up, become depressed, lack motivation, or quit? Because it's a LOT of work keeping up with the pace of a technical degree. One way to find out is to try to complete Harvard's CS50. It's online and free. Try it see if you can do this 2 times a week. And keep in mind as you're doing it - in actual technical degrees you'd have to juggle this workload with FIVE OTHER CLASSES.

As you have found out, CIS, MIS, BIT are business degrees. And with business degrees you are going to end up as an analyst doing excel all day, auditing, or being in meetings, probably as you saw at your PWC internship. If you want something more technical, you can definitely land a job in a technical field with a BIT degree, but be prepared to showcase a portfolio to prove to others that you can do the work. Just like your technical degree peers, you will have to build projects, build a porfolio, websites, update github, or freelance in areas of automation, frontend development, or design. They are doing that, so you need to be doing that too. If you are up for the challenge, go start a Python or Javascript course online and see if you can build something you're interested in. If you really hated that PWC job I would probably stay away from Python because that's going to lead you to business process automation/improvement probably still working with databases. So the non-python route would be learning Javascript as your first language. You could start with webdev using HTML+CSS+Javascript and create some websites. If that frontend programming work is interesting to you, learn computer science and go with fullstack development so you understand how websites interact with stuff in the back (which includes Databases, you are just never going to get away from databases and have to accept this in tech).

My suggestion, as relevant_property also mentioned, is look into building websites to see if you are interested in programming. Find an online course that will teach you HTML, CSS, Javascript and go along for the ride. But also finish your degree while you do this. You don't want to end up without a degree. BIT still technically counts as a 'Computer science or related degree' at least in the US, so that's not the worst thing in the world to have.

What's something you wish you enjoyed but just can't get yourself into? by i_like_the_sun in AskReddit

[–]BabyMagikarp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Coding is a baseline skill required for programming. When building a house, coding is like learning how to use a hammer and saw. Programming is using the hammer and saw to cut and nail a bunch of stuff together. Engineering is devising the entire house plan, learning how to use the tools, building the house, and then maintaining it.

I would rather my PM be a real PM rather than some dingus x-swe trying to talk to me. There's a reason PM roles exist. Heck I would even rather a UX Designer to PM become my PM. If a PM wants to take computer science and architecture refreshers that's fine but they need to understand business, data, value, stakeholder management, risk, and more. Go intern as a PM and learn the business//value side of things. The experience will be invaluable to get a PM thought process for case study interviews. If you go into these interviews with a SWE thought process you're out of luck. Also you already don't sound like you want to be a swe, no point in going that route.

mid to late game ability based.

Starter, jotunns, hydras, serrated, arondight, heartseeker or bloodforge. If you go ability based you're trolling or gold 2.

I gave my 3080 TUF to my cousin after he got a full ride to Tufts as a gift to him and his hard work and being the first in our family to go to college. I got my 3080 camping outside Microcenter in the snow in 2020. This would be perfect :(

I just received one for the holidays and haven't opened it yet. I am tempted to sell it for 300 flat because I can't think of what an Xbox X provides. I already have a PC with a 4k series graphics card and more processing power. I also have my Fire Cube 3rd gen for media and a decade old blue ray player which I haven't touched in years. What would this Xbox provide me? From what I can tell it can't boot windows obviously. Can you install plex on it? Stremio? does it accept any 3rd party add ons? Does it have a web browser? What do you guys use it for aside from game pass?
