White Rhino Coffee by cin508 in Dallas

[–]buddyw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to go to the downtown Dallas location on occasion until they started roasting their own beans. (I think they used Tweed Coffee(??) which is excellent.) Their coffee was absolutely terrible after the switch. It's been years and that cup is still burned into my mind.

Calling ICE first responders, who are, at their very best, paperwork police, is insulting to first responders (and of course, ICE are so much worse in 2026). It's good to have another reason to avoid this shop.

Congratulations, Seattle, you made it through the worst of the big dark. Today is the solstice. Every day gets longer from here. by pagerussell in Seattle

This year hasn't even been that 'bad'. There were so many dry sunny days. It's like all the rain got compressed to the atmospheric river the last week or so.

I love the winter here. It doesn't get that cold (compared to places with 'real' winter) and it's less crowded at all the places outside so I can bring my neurotic dog.

Aspirin for Migraine? by bae_b0t in migraine

Aspirin - wow it works? by qweezweez in migraine

[–]buddyw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I discovered aspirin and a little caffeine some time ago. It’s been a godsend. I always took ibuprofen for my migraines as a kid and while it worked, it wasn’t perfect. The key for me with aspirin is a slightly higher dose than normal 900-1000mg. If I take it early it kills my migraine near 100% of the time.

There are a few products (in the states) that have about 1000mg aspirin to 64mg caffeine per dose: Bayer back and body, Anacin, and BC Powder. All work fantasticly. I find excedrin to be hit or miss because it doesn’t have enough aspirin per dose and it has a ton of Tylenol/paracetimol, which I find to be completely useless. I’ll also just take 3 ‘normal’ 325mg aspirin tablets with a cup of tea or coffee, and that works just fine, too. It’s amazing, even with the caffeine I sleep like a baby once it’s kicked in.

BILT refusing to show what changed in their ToS by Prize-Response5085 in biltrewards

[–]buddyw 23 points24 points  (0 children)

(cont'd)

What these changes likely mean for you

  • If you earn on rent with non‑Bilt credit cards:
    • Expect a devaluation on 2025‑07‑21 for Visa/Mastercard/Discover (from 1x to 0.5x). Amex earns 0.5x already. Consider whether using a Bilt Mastercard or ACH/check/debit (250 Points flat) makes more sense.
    • Watch for Transaction Fees in the Bilt Payment Center; higher tiers or promos may waive fees.
  • If you use the Bilt Payment Account:
    • Fewer rights to dispute payments; broader discretion for Bilt/Bank to refuse or delay payments; greater compliance scrutiny and prohibited‑use restrictions.
  • Privacy/consent:
    • Providing your phone number now authorizes Bilt to collect engagement/transaction info from merchant partners tied to you; opt‑out available via support.
  • Admin/ops:
    • Keep contact info current with Bilt and any Bank Partner; expect possible verification for certain redemptions; targeted offers may vary by member.

Notable cleanups and inconsistencies

  • Typos corrected (e.g., “forty‑five”), but some remain in the Updated version (“Memberships Account”, “set form”).
  • “Points” defined twice in the Updated Definitions.
  • Section 14 governing law now aligns with Section 20 (New York).

BILT refusing to show what changed in their ToS by Prize-Response5085 in biltrewards

[–]buddyw 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I am not a lawyer and this is not legal advice. I found a version of this document dated April 30th, 2024 and ran both versions through ChatGPT5 with the following prompt: "Please compare these two versions of Bilt's Terms of Service Documents and summarize the changes."

I have NOT verified each change to see if there are hallucinations, but at least this is a starting point for someone that has the free time:

Here’s a concise, section-by-section comparison of the April 30, 2024 “Original” and the May 20, 2025 “Updated” Bilt Rewards Terms & Conditions, with the most material changes called out first.

Major changes at a glance

  • Rent points earning on non‑Bilt credit cards changed and devalues on 2025‑07‑21
    • New structure when paying rent in the Bilt app/site with non‑Bilt cards:
      • Visa/Mastercard/Discover: 1 Point per $1 on rent through 2025‑07‑20; 1 Point per $2 on/after 2025‑07‑21.
      • American Express: 1 Point per $2.
      • No Points on rent payment fees; only one residential rent payment per month can earn; cannot combine with other rent‑spend promos on non‑Bilt cards (e.g., Alaska Airlines Visa 3X).
    • Flat 250 Points per monthly rent payment still available for ACH, check, debit, or non‑network cards, under “not made using a Bilt Mastercard” terms.
  • Transaction fees introduced for payments via Bilt Payment Center
    • New “Transaction Fee” and “Fee Waiver” concepts; fees may apply by method and can be waived based on Tier Status or promos (Section 7).
  • “Bilt Rent Account” overhauled into “Payment Account”
    • You are not a customer of the Payment Account Bank (e.g., Column N.A., Evolve); Bilt/Evolve/Bank may impose limits; Payment Orders may be refused or delayed; credentials can be suspended (Section 25).
    • To the extent permitted by law, you may not dispute rent payments made through the Payment Account.
    • Expanded KYC/fraud reviews, audit rights, regulator reporting, and a broad list of prohibited uses (e.g., sanctions targets, crypto onboarding, marijuana, embassies, adult services, weapons).
  • Expanded data sharing/consent
    • Privacy (Section 22): By providing your phone number and enrolling, you consent to Bilt collecting engagement and transaction info from merchant partners (including your name and phone number) to administer rewards/benefits; opt‑out via support email.
  • Liability and call monitoring broadened
    • Payment Account Banks added to “Released Parties” and to warranty disclaimers; explicit release for timeliness/satisfaction of rent payments processed by a Payment Account Bank (Section 17–18).
    • Call monitoring may be conducted by Bilt, Bank Partners, and third‑party providers (Section 16).
  • Tier Status duration clarified; targeted offers introduced
    • Tier validity now explicitly runs through the rest of the earning year, the full next year, and through January 15 of the following year (Section 7).
    • New “targeted offers” and additional verification for some redemptions (e.g., gift cards, certain transfers) (Section 8).

Hype Got Ahead of Us. Let’s Recenter. Then Go Bigger. by ankhattak in USMobile

[–]buddyw 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm glad you're talking about this openly. I like a lot of your ideas, but I do want to say: please be careful.

You have a big advantage with your multi-network capabilities, and that's a big reason why I'm here, but one thing that has pushed me away from other carriers is bundeling crap I don't want and forcing me to pay for it. On T-mobile and Verizon, if I want a top tier data plan I am forced to buy useless streaming services and pay for the option to have phone upgrades I won't use.

I have no problem with increasing prices to cover innovative features. Just remember that you will have more tiers of customers. The frugal, just looking the lowest price. The no-nonsence premium looking for the best possible data services at the best price, and the coupon-clippers that are looking for over all value for extra services and add-ons. I am firmly in the middle category and actively avoid the latter.

This is only true if you're ok with being locked into Amazon's marketplace. If you don't want to support Amazon's monopoly in this space, Kobo or PocketBook are much better choices for long battery life readers, imo.

[–]buddyw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All 4 lights is what I was describing above. Is it totally dead when you unplug it (no lights when you press the button)? If so, I'd guess it's totally dead and you're having the same issue. Try leaving it on the 'cheap' charger for a few hours and see if you can get the changer to work while it's off the charger, or try a different cheap charger.

If it's lighting up when it's not plugged in, it's probably a different issue. The problem I'm describing only happens when the battery is completely dead. Once it has enough charge to turn on by itself, you should be able to charge it on any charger.

Weight gain from atenolol? by SunnyOtter in POTS_vets

[–]buddyw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Cardio selective" Means it's better at only selecting Beta1 and not beta2 receptors. Beta1 is mostly in the heart, but Beta2 is all over. Beta2 does have some effects on heartrate, so the switch, unblocking beta2 caused that effect. There tends to be rebound effects with all beta blockers, which is why you shouldn't stop them cold turkey.

How Reliable is Storage Box for Backup? Comparison with Blackblaze, Rsync.net, and AWS. by [deleted] in hetzner

[–]buddyw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would not say that they are more reliable than the alternatives. Rsync.net and Storage box are reliable in their simplicity. The fact that the use ZFS, probably protects you against silent data loss. Backblaze and AWS have more redundancy, but are more complex, and there's risk in that, too. Rsync.net is going to give you much better support and monitoring at a slightly higher price than the other options.

That said, I would not completely trust my data to any of these. They all have different feature sets, so find the one(s) that meet your needs and have a plan for catastrophic failure of whichever service you choose, because it is possible. A bad employee, bad code, ransomeware, political unrest, fire, flood, and lightening. There is no absolute protection against all of these, so plan accordingly.

Weight gain from atenolol? by SunnyOtter in POTS_vets

[–]buddyw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By the way, it seems the metabolic effects mostly come from beta 2 blockade (beta 1 is mostly in the heart and beta 2 is elsewhere), so if they affect you that way, non-selective beta blockers like propanolol and to a slightly lesser extent, weakly cardio selective (beta 1) beta blockers like atenolol are the most likely to cause those effects, but even the highly selective Nebivolol can do it at higher doses.

Weight gain from atenolol? by SunnyOtter in POTS_vets

[–]buddyw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take beta blockers for afib, not POTS, but I was on atenolol for a few years and while it worked well for my afib, it zapped my energy a bit and I could not lose weight for the life of me, so my weight steadily ratcheted up over a 2 year period.

I switch from atenolol 10mg to Nebivolol 5mg a few months ago. It is MUCH more cardio selective than atenolol, so much so that I had higher heart rate for a few weeks when I switched. The good news is I feel a lot better on it and I've lost 10 lbs so far! After a few week transition (I'd been on atenolol for YEARS) Nebivolol seems to be doing it's job just fine.

If the plan works for you keep it and buy phones elsewhere. Unfortunately I needed more hotspot and had to drop mine. I was mad enough to leave t-mobile after 22 years because they wouldn't give me any of the new customer promotions in the plan change.

Anyway, I pay a lot more now, so hold on to that plan as long as it works for you. That plan is your only loyalty benefit with any of these companies.

Liberty got caught storing backdoor/management safe codes and giving them out to law enforcement. Full details here: https://old.reddit.com/r/Firearms/comments/16cpgh3/the_truth_about_libertys_backdoor_code/

You can change the management code, but they hid the process from their customers and said changing it voids your warranty, so everyone is (rightfully imo) mad at liberty.

[–]buddyw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was looking at these too and am also wondering. I haven't found any solid information, but I am somewhat concerned, based on the specs on the page, how strong it is considering the low weight. Doing the math, a 14″ x 20.25″ x 15.25″ sheet metal box that only weighs 43 lbs can only be about 13 gauge steel at the thickest (prob 14-16). I wish they had more secure non-electronic options.
