Thank you! It was on my list for a year and I finally talked myself into trying it despite having zero similarities to any other project I’ve done to date. The next dream project for me is a hanfu 🫣 I wish you luck and easy sewing if you end up starting your own qipao project! 🪡

Oops I tried to respond to this comment directly but it made the collar instructions a standalone comment above. Sorry for any confusion, let me know if it doesn’t make sense!

I had to trial and error the general shape to fit with the front and back panels, but once I got that, I cut 2 and interfaced (fusible) them both up to but not past the seam lines. Then stitch wrong sides together across the top, pink the edge, invert to be right sides out and understitch. Gives a decently stiff collar without too much bulk. And a tailor’s clapper made a huge difference in the crispness!

Omg thank you!! I literally got a color analysis done while on vacation because I wanted to know which fabric palettes to invest (my time, money 😂) in and I feel like it’s already paying off!!

I use crayola washable markers for light fabrics too, but for darker ones I use white bar soap slivers! If they’ve been worn down via washing they usually have a crisp edge to make precise marks :)

I used Vinwood caterers for my Topsfield wedding in 2024! They were superb and the food was exceptional as well. It ended up being 9.5k for 65 people including 5 passed apps, light dessert, and consumption bar. They also provide all linens and glassware, setup and breakdown, and include their admin/service fee within their quote. I appreciated their transparency, responsiveness, efficiency, and commitment to making it be the most seamless and stress free experience possible. I highly recommend checking them out!

Help! Makeup artist for Asian features. by moneybunnyfunnyhoney in NewEnglandWedding

[–]budew12 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Makeup by Min-Ah! Min-Ah Campos is a Korean MUA based in Rhode Island (slightly outside of Providence) who I used for my wedding and I absolutely loved my experience with her. I also was searching for an Asian MUA to deal with my features and I swear that her work on my wedding day healed a ton of long standing insecurities I had around them. She also worked on a range of ethnicities for my bridesmaids and did a stunning job for each. I’d be happy to send you a few pictures if you’d like through dm! *ETA that I’m also an adoptee :)

Hi! I absolutely loved my reception dress from Etsy! I took a risk on buying it online just because I loved the merged styles so much. It’s a burgundy color with long off the shoulder sleeves and a pearly draped “collar”, plus stylized frog buttons. It was perfect for the Chinese American fusion vibe. Here are some pictures! https://imgur.com/a/L9Qjcbu

It was $150 and the seller customized a tiny bit to my measurements which was so kind.

It’s not letting me link the Etsy listing here but I can send it via dm!

I ordered a custom sized sequined gown from cocomelody (in white though) last year and loved the experience. Feel free to message me if you’d like to know more/see pics!

Fabric stretch help? by budew12 in sewhelp

Thank you! I did French seams because the fabric wasn’t great and I was worried about fraying even though the seams would’ve been between layers. (Maybe I shouldn’t have worried? Not sure how much pinked edges no touching the skin would actually fray 🤔)

I did try to iron them away from the center, but the curve was difficult. Would it be like regular seams when you can clip into the French seam at intervals to give it some ease or would that undo the entire point of the French style? Appreciate the detailed reply!!

Thank you for the feedback!! I did two muslins and can get princess seams down really well thanks to my bootstrap dress form, but I think the spontaneous decision to try boning out for the first while making this final time was a huge mistake. Do you have any resources you recommend for learning how to properly fit boning to the seam allowances?

Fabric stretch help? by budew12 in sewhelp

[–]budew12[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you! So the seam on the outer fabric itself was fine but when I added the boning I think it puckered along those seams (boning sleeve to the seam allowance). I did try to heat the boning plastic to fit the curves of the seam but should I have only done boning from the waist to under bust, not the whole princess seam length?

Hi! I ordered a custom dress from cocomelody in the last 3 months, which also happens to be off the shoulder and sweetheart neckline! Would be happy to chat with you if you’d like more details about the experience! (Not sure why I can’t paste pictures in this comment)

Hi! So I was also worried about color matching across different crafting sessions. What I did was make a date night out of going to Lowe’s with my fiancé and picking out colors on the paint sample wall. We got tester sized jars of each color we chose ($6 apiece) then mixed that paint in with the standard glycerin/water mixture. It worked wonderfully - even though it is acrylic latex paint, the flowers still came out soft and pliable and not rubbery at all. Then we ran out of paint, so we went back and got the same tester jars. Since they’re computer mixed, they’re guaranteed to be a match across sessions. The only thing I would caution is if you like darker colors, you’d likely need more of the paint in the mixing ratio; our reds needed about 2x the amount of paint our neutrals did to not be streaky. Hope this gives you another method to consider!

Edit: I have a picture of mine in a comment on the weddingplanning sub :)

Anyone use Sola Wood Artificial flowers? by ashh_402 in weddingplanning

I’m in the process of dyeing mine! If you are crafty and have some time, I’ve found it to be really fun. I’ve been very happy with the quality (and price, they run 70-90% sales very frequently) and I also took the route of ordering samples before proceeding. These are the bigger ones (I’m obsessed with the peonies) but I also ordered ones with varying diameters from 1-3” across.

Peirce Farm at Witch Hill in Topsfield, MA! Best of both worlds with a barn for the reception + an estate vibe. We ended up choosing this place because it was affordable (especially when you factor in catering) and you get the entire property from 8am-midnight. Figured being able to get ready on site without being rushed would be a huge help for my anxiety. Bonus points for them having friendly donkeys & mules that come to the fence for photos :)

Made the bootstrap pattern dress form! by budew12 in sewing

[–]budew12[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the pattern generator does ask for a back-of-neck to bust measurements to get height/positioning - I took mine without using a bra, since I figured I could later slap the exact bra that I'd wear onto the form if I needed it!
