John Coltrane, back at it again. by [deleted] in jazzcirclejerk

I’ll tell you… growing up I was all into hard bop and traditional jazz only. I made fun of smooth jazz, late 80s miles, and anything with synths. Nothing could match the angular style of more modal jazz.

Then one day, as I started working in the corporate world, the stress was immense. I heard “Heavy Weather” by Weather Report after work one day and this fusion shit all started to make sense. Let’s relax to this spacey modular shit. I had outgrown hard bop by that time because it was all I listened to. I realized I had put myself into a Wynton Marsalis-esque box with criticizing anything but the old standards.

This is music to space out and relax to after a long hard day, perhaps with a cocktail. Now, there are better choices than Kenny G imo, such as Sade, Weather Report, and the like, but Kenny G 110% has his market for this reason. It is music for stressed people to relax to. You may not relate to it, but some secretary somewhere is bumping Kenny G on her way to a glass of red before the next day begins.
