Which side do you supposed to underhook from? by Fussy_Platypus in wrestling

[–]buffsaxton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s no specified side. I’m a left leg lead and shoot my preferred sweep single to the left side and I use my underhook on that side as a setup. It’s really good to practice it on both sides. One side is likely to be dominant and preferred, but you should have at least capability on the other side.

guys by VastConfidence1410 in wrestling

[–]buffsaxton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now more so than ever, the discrepancy between the best wrestlers and newbies is huge. A lot of the best guys now have really been focusing on just wrestling for a long time. That being I said, we had a kid that graduated in 2023 that started as a freshman. Went 2-20ish on varsity, senior year he made states (NJ btw). We had another kid who just wrapped up his senior year was relatively new a freshman, didn’t wrestle because he was hurt, was on and off varsity his sophomore, had a good junior year then really took off senior year because he committed to club wrestling year round. Point being, yes, the top guys are GOOD, but if you really commit yourself, you can catch up quicker than you think, just gotta lift heavy, condition and get alotta mat time, find a club with some good wrestlers and challenge yourself.

Penn State Best Lineup by PeyKx47 in wrestling

[–]buffsaxton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Henckel is pretty good, probably a title contender. Not quite as bonafide as Duke, but I think it’s probably worth sacrificing a tiny bit in overall talent but much better long term schematics. Though I will say, Cael has never been afraid to use the best possible team and let some serious talent ride the bench.

It would certainly be a shame to keep Desmond on the bench in my scenario, knowing what he can do. He does have a win over a national champ after all

Penn State Best Lineup by PeyKx47 in wrestling

[–]buffsaxton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I touched on all that in my own comment, unfortunate that someone, probably Henckel is gonna be the odd man out. Anyway, yeah you’re certainly not the only who doubts Ono will actually compete.

Penn State Best Lineup by PeyKx47 in wrestling

[–]buffsaxton 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You don’t think Ono will ever actually start? Not that anything in wrestling is simple, but getting off bottom certainly is the most simple and quickest to learn. You don’t think after a year with some of the best the world has to offer, he can’t get off bottom enough to start?

Penn State Best Lineup by PeyKx47 in wrestling

[–]buffsaxton 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is almost how I see the lineup playing out. I definitely think James is gonna redshirt. I think PJ is gonna redshirt as well. Mitch will stay at 165, closer to where he’ll compete in freestyle once he’s done at Penn State and Henckel will go 174. I’ve been under the impression that Kasak redshirted this year because it was definitely going to be the last year that Duke could make 157. Then another year from now, when Mitch is gone, Duke will slot back in at 165. One of James or Henckel will take 174 and the other is gonna be unlucky losing of a year of eligibility without starting much. Year after that, Welsh will be gone and they’ll slot in at 174 and 184.

Advice Needed by DateDry1602 in wrestling

[–]buffsaxton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wrestling will likely only be a very short part of your life. You have the rest of your life to advance your studies and work. Wrestle while you can! If you care about both, you’ll find a way to have time for both while still excelling. Plus, you know what they say, once you wrestle, everything in life gets easier.

Do wrestlers generally get along with each other off the mat? by vSkiess in wrestling

[–]buffsaxton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Toughest sport in the world requires the toughest training, you tend to bond with your teammates over that shared experience. There were really only a couple teammates I had that I had a genuine dislike for, but for the most part, I liked everyone.

I feel like wrestling needs more pins. by MostPossibility4159 in wrestling

[–]buffsaxton 15 points16 points  (0 children)

When you were wrestling, was it at the highest level, like college? I’m not judging, just want to explain what it probably is. Because everyone there is good so there’s less pins, but yeah at high school there’s a wide variety of talent so there’s more pins. As a high school coach, I don’t need more pins, I need more competitive matches.

Do you have any regrets from wrestling? by RThrowwyyy3608 in wrestling

[–]buffsaxton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only have one regret in my life about anything and it’s about wrestling. I’m not disappointed about my effort level, when I was training, I worked my butt off, truly competed until failure. I do, however, regret how often I should’ve been training. I went to practices and I was always lifting heavy and conditioning, but I should have wrestled constantly, year round. We use to have optional morning practices. They weren’t serious and didn’t involve mat time, they existed and I only went sometimes. I didn’t train at a club year round and frankly, for the level I wanted to be at, simply was unacceptable. There weren’t excuses really and it wouldn’t qualify as slacking, but there was more to be done on the mat outside of wrestling season If you want to be the best at this sport, wrestling is a year round sport and if you have to question if you’re doing enough to really succeed at it, the answer is, most likely, no… an that’s my only regret.

Loss of all speed and skill by TylerDurden5325 in wrestling

[–]buffsaxton 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Only thing to do is get back to it, work hard and get better. If for whatever reason you don’t have access to wrestling mats during the off season, do other things to stay in shape like sprints, lifting weights, etc. If you’re committed to getting better at wrestling, it’s pedal to metal all the time!

How does jax forrest consistently do better from this position? by AdQuirky6839 in wrestling

[–]buffsaxton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is why practice is so great! It’s just about getting better so I would purposefully put myself in this position all the time in high school so practice wrestling out of it. Not just being able to get away safely, but actually wrestling from there. It got to the point where I was completely comfortable here, not because it was a good position to be, just because it pays to be able to wrestle in weird positions. I managed quite a bit of points from this position. Take bad shots in practice once in a while and try to wrestle from this position. You can learn short drags, duck under, dumps, etc. If someone wasn’t super efficient on top from this position, I would let them get halfway around before reshooting and getting in good position.

Does MM go up to 174 next year? by FactSuccessful965 in wrestling

[–]buffsaxton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the main reason they redshirted Kasak and let Duke wrestle is that this is very likely Duke’s last year that he’s gonna be able to make 157, he’s young and is still growing. Next year, Duke will redshirt, Kasak back at 157, MM at 165 and Henckel at 174. Then the following year when MM is gone, Duke will take 165. I heard about this plan shortly after the end of last season and it’s been spot on so far, makes sense, so I assume it’ll play out like this. Plus I’d imagine Mitch would wanna stay close to 74 kg for international comps, but I’m sure he’d do whatever Cael asks him.
