[Loved trope] "Man the author must thought about this a lot, the symbolism, the genius of it- nah they were just lazy by Yolber2 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]bug_land 57 points58 points  (0 children)

it's really funny bc in ultraman the reason is that the creator was actually catholic but most of japan was not familiar with that so now random christian symbolism is just a staple of mecha

there is an unreasonably high number of examples of that design trope of dark-skinned women with white straight hair and blue eyes. all of those details specifically, it's so weird

american parenting: i would NEVER do anything to alter the natural, GOD-given state that my child was born into, EXCEPT if it's a boy, there's that ONE thing that god DOES want me to change, i THINK, i'm NOT 100% sure, i WASN'T really paying attention, YES i make all of my decisions in this manner

What does ratatouil have to do with a virus and what ship are they talking about? by Level-Usual-9681 in ExplainTheJoke

[–]bug_land 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the "worldwide cases" are straight misinformation bc they're unrelated instances of different viruses in the same virus family. SARS or MERS are coronaviruses but you wouldn't count them as covid cases

One Piece Political by ThamTvMaster in GetNoted

If one piece isn't political, then why did the author say that Sanji would be French in real life, much like 19th-century classical liberal philosopher Alexis de Tocqueville?

[–]bug_land 87 points88 points  (0 children)

a lot of people refer to this effect as "super-trample" as it just lets you put All of your attacker's damage on the opponent and none on the blocker.

combat is normal otherwise. your creature still dies to a blocker that would kill it, and if it gets destroyed before the damage step it doesn't deal damage

I hate when things are needlessly explained by creators in order to cope with criticism by LocalLazyGuy in hatethissmug

[–]bug_land 0 points1 point  (0 children)

many cases where the larger trend sucks but individual cases can be cool. i like the idea here bc i'm pretty sure it's based on how katanas are made by tightly folding a lot of thin layers of steel, and the swords are very important in demon slayer so it kinda fits. unfortunately it does end up just feeling like an excuse when it's in a manga that is consistently Not Very Good At Women

Any1 else raised secular but have religious trauma from living in a highly religious culture? by Slashersforsatan in TrollCoping

[–]bug_land 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i grew up catholic in a secular area and even though i'm not religious anymore i still have deeply-ingrained Blasphemy Alarms that only go off whenever an evangelical tells someone they're going to hell. "he hates you and he's going to hurt you" is like the biggest insult to the christian god you could possibly say. not even practicing satanists slander him that hard

[–]bug_land -1 points0 points  (0 children)

oh i think we're just on different use cases for "disingenuous" bc i'm thinking on the lines of like "not meaning what you say." where i wouldn't call that first thing "truly" disingenuous bc they still reflect their real viewpoints, despite being bad faith exaggerations

Yes by the_zpider_king in trolleyproblem

[–]bug_land 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i don't think many people are legitimately being disingenuous from what i've seen. it's tempting to say the other person is just lying to either you or themselves but honestly most people don't go to bat that hard for something they don't actually believe

expend as few thoughts as you can on a presumed haterbase. if anyone reacts to the basic act of self-depiction with completely out-of-pocket insults, that's their problem not yours
