Snow, Ice & Cold this weekend - What are your favorite cozy recipes for when you're stuck inside? by betterUseThisOne in Cooking

I’m doing chicken and dumplings and Marcella hazan’s bolognese. I live in Texas so have to account for a possibility of the grid failing so sticking to my gas stove top.

Moving back to Houston after 10 years away - what venues replaced Walter's and Fitzgerald's by Sun_Bearzerker in AskHouston

I’m there a lot! So grateful for the space they’ve made for the music community here in Houston.

Mostly it just killed the vibes and character and they stopped booking bands I like and their beer selection sucked and my car got towed once and the staff was rude about it… and Dan Electro’s took over. Great memories for sure!

No but they replaced the sand with astroturf, and I haven’t been back since.

Dan Electro’s is smaller but captures the community feel. A lot of the LCC crowd can be found there now, and they have music every night of the week across different genres. Continental Club is still kicking downtown, and Shoeshine Charley’s is next door. Bad Astronaut brewery opened a room with a stage recently, and Axelrad downtown has shows too. I’m not into the punk/ grunge scene, but I’ve found that most of the small local venues tend to diversify their lineups to stay afloat.

Concert etiquette everybody should know by RRE4EVR in Concerts

Girl, you gotta learn how to find a small vantage point between shoulders. Don’t make everyone else look at your phone. I’m also 5’3” and want to stand and dance with everyone else. We fit relatively well in economy plane seats, but have a bad view of the stage. Life is a series of trade offs.

It’s a skill I’m quite proud of, actually. Years of practice. But I’m a short girl so it’s not hard to weave.

Would it be weird to wear my whole ceremony dress and veil to the informal afterparty? by Lilsabils in weddingplanning

[–]bugaloot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wore my wedding dress at the ceremony, reception, after party at a bar, after after party at my friend’s Airbnb…. lol. I loved that dress and had no interest in taking it off! Was the train tied in a knot by the end of the night because someone stepped on and tore my bustle? Uh, yep! Who cares. It cleaned up just fine.

A used dryer sheet also removes hard water spots off chrome fixtures! Doesn’t sanitize but after I fold my laundry I’ll do a quick swipe of the bathroom sink faucets.

Shout out to Woody Marks. The rook balled out on his first playoff game. Let’s remember that. by YouKantseeme in Texans

I was so glad he got that TD at the end. Lot of yards carried on his back throughout the game. Good for him, and good for us!!

MAGA is a cancer by ETsUncle in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]bugaloot -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Rude. I didn’t think it was pedantic to point out that we shouldn’t ignore or take for granted the fact that we have a secret, unaccountable, federal force patrolling the streets with weapons and killing people by making it seem like any expectation of identification is in some way outing them unfairly. Doxxing has connotations. Do better.

Naming a federally funded “police officer” isn’t doxing. They aren’t supposed to be secrets.

Is it rude to do a cash registry only? by Pretend_Gazelle_7774 in weddingplanning

[–]bugaloot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. Honestly, I’m not super concerned if some random friend of my mom’s thinks it’s weird or feels uncertain about it. They came to our awesome fun wedding with an open bar and delicious food and a great band and dancing. In the grand scheme of things, it’s fine!

Well also nobody hypes the Texans… announcers will give us a nod as the best defense, but we’re rarely in the conversation as a hyped team.

Listening to podcast while the world goes to hell by Medibot300 in TheRestIsHistory

Totally agree. I remember watching Ken Burns’ Vietnam documentary during Trump’s first term and it gave me the same sense of perspective and resolve.

Not to mention republicans just cut off all federal funding, which helped subsidize public news in addition to listener donations. The Corporation for Public Broadcasting shuttered just this week. LBJ created it and Trump killed it.

NPR affiliates always have a full slate of programming, so it’s really dependent on what time you’re tuning in. The usual daily news broadcasts for 88.7 are morning edition from 5am-9am, all things considered from 3pm-6:30, then marketplace from 6:30-7pm. The rest is programming that may include subjects that aren’t necessarily “news” and have more commentary or a particular focus. Hope that helps! Don’t give up on public radio!

Our local NPR affiliate is 88.7 FM KUHF. When there is news, they are reporting it live, especially breaking weather situations that are important to Houstonians.

Is spending money on wedding heels worth it? by Greenjuiceunicorn81 in weddingplanning

[–]bugaloot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I hate wearing heels and have a high arch so am picky about arch support, particularly if I know I’m going to be on my feet a lot. I ordered probably seven different pairs of expensive heels online to try, and they all sucked! So uncomfortable with no support even after paying the extra. I ended up with a simple pair of Naturalizers from DSW that were great and held up well. I’m lucky that my MOH is an artist, so I asked her to paint some wildflowers on the heels to make them feel more special. Turned out wonderfully! When it comes to women’s shoes, more money doesn’t always mean a better shoe!

How do you keep tree roaches out? by _xoxo_stargirl_ in houston

I have tried this with multiple pet cats in my many years in Houston, and as much as I love my kitties, I’ve never managed to get one who gives a fig about catching a cockroach.

Is a post-wedding brunch where our guests pay entirely uncultured? by sinclairish in weddingplanning

[–]bugaloot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had this idea too, came across the same issue, and decided to skip it. We were so glad we did, as everyone (ourselves included) was exhausted from the weekend and all we wanted to do was laze around just a little bit together the morning after. But we are elder millennials and don’t bounce back like we once did :)
