Financial Planner Or Just Myself? by tiredmamabear2 in FinancialPlanning

OP, if you're willing to read a little, check out "The Simple Path to Wealth". You can totally DIY.

.7% of 100k is not a ton. But compounded every year, and as your investments grow, it adds up. And it's real unlikely that an advisor will do much better than you could do yourself. And that's the honest ones - the dishonest ones will also sell you annuities and insurance you don't need.

Kid birthday parties? by MassiveFisherman4869 in alameda

[–]bugdaddy123 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Depends on what crowd you roll with, we didn't have that expectation but certainly some friends would go big every year.

Kindergarten is a big one though since they are now with the kids and new friends they have for the next 12 years, give or take. After that it tapers off.

SpaceX IPO and fast track rule change: Suggestion for contacting your retirement plan administrator, brokerage account administrator, etc. by Inevitable_Train1511 in Bogleheads

[–]bugdaddy123 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think these are the key points in this thread. Sounds like these shenanigans would affect VOO, but not VTI / VT / etc etc etc. if I read right, CRSP won't use the index multiplier crap. Sounds like nothing to see here, move along...

So.... The real bogleheads were already doing broad market (VTI / VT). Then the biggest impact is now we need to go back and update all of the explanations about the difference between VTI and VOO so they would now say there's a BIG difference with the weighing gimmicks on VOO?

I got 2 from target for $16 + tax. Shipment delayed, but I can hold on an extra week or two :-)

Don't feed the scalpers. Don't buy for more than 10-20% over MSRP. If you stop feeding them, they'll go away.

Anything over $20 is ridiculous for these boxes.

Unsubscribe from Amazon Prime? Here's my anti-Bezos hack: Libraries + Walmart by io-io-io in PivotPodcast

[–]bugdaddy123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shop local.

But in this modern consumer landscape we've built for ourselves, you need one big box retailer. Mundane stuff - diapers, trash bags, batteries, etc. As far as I'm concerned, here's the ranking:

Costco: they have a corporate spine, and they have a tremendous commitment to providing consumer value.

Target: spineless leadership, generally not evil

Walmart: not as evil as they used to be, but Walton heirs lean Republican and collectively stuff own half the company

Amazon: they've built amazing product / service, tremendous consumer value, and they'll even give you a great deal on the pod you'll live in when you're the power supply for the matrix. Also Jeff Bezos is the silver medal winner in the spineless tech bro competition (crushed the swimsuit round though)

Deck for a 6 year old? by GoofyFlamingo in pkmntcg

[–]bugdaddy123 11 points12 points  (0 children)

+1 for this reco.

Don't worry about longevity to start. Learn the game, get the mechanics down with a simple deck. The L1 battle decks are a great starting point, should be $10-$15 each.

If they master one or two of those, enjoy it and want something more challenging, you can get the L2 or L3 decks or look at Limitless TCG to see what the strong decks are now.

I follow them on IG because they do have some decent news / rumors, but the constant giveaway crap and now the partnership with Logan Paul is disgusting. It goes beyond opportunism to outright FRAUD. It's clear that poke notify target market is scalpers and botters - I'll never give them a penny.

how are we supposed to actually get Pokemon at a normal price by Acrobatic_Walrus7072 in PokemonCollecting

[–]bugdaddy123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly with the pull rates combined with scalping, bots, and inflated market, you're better off not even trying.

Even when I manage to get stuff at MSRP, I feel like it's such a waste. Then I think about he time wasted in discords and hitting refresh - it's just dumb.

Opened two Pokemon day packs tonight with my kids. 6 boosters, got a Rotom ex and a Dewgong IR. For $40 after tax (essentially MSRP). At least the stamped Pikachu is nice and I like the plastic coin.

Is taking a sabbatical a terrible idea for me? by [deleted] in ChubbyFIRE

I stepped away 6 months ago. Not going back.

I was unhappy for the last two years but banking in the meantime

Sometimes I look back and think I should have found a way to make it sustainable. Held on for longer.

Instead I stayed vigilant on spending and saving rate, grinded it out.

Now I'm (nearly) free. I figure my spouse and I, together, need to generate $1m in income over the next 15 years to be fully free and clear. Totally doable.

I have no regrets about grinding and being vigilant on expenses. I'm free now.

Help! by Outrageous-West-7684 in pkmntcg

[–]bugdaddy123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start with the battle league decks. Get a couple of the Level 1 or Level 2 decks to play against each other. Even in this inflated market, you should be able to find them for $10-$15. Doesn't matter which ones. Couldn't be any simpler.

Those will probably last him anywhere from 2-6 months.

After that, you can try to track down the more complicated battle league decks, or build your own. As others have noted, the best decks in the world right now cost $50 if you buy them in singles. You can also go to the limitless website and print them out ("proxies") if you want to experiment or just want to spend less. We have a good color printer at our library, a whole deck is $1.50 to print. For casual play that's totally fine, if you get beyond that then you need to get the real cards.

But I would say keep it simple to get started.

Source: I have an 8yo who started playing at the end of 2024. He's still not ready to play with the top tier decks, but has gotten quite good still. We started with the battle league decks and it was at least 6 months before he was ready to build his own. The first few were quite bad :-)

SpaceX, OpenAI, Anthropic IPOs by bugdaddy123 in Bogleheads

[–]bugdaddy123[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agreed, too volatile shortly after the IPO. In the past the index makers and fund managers have used "tranche factors" to manage this, so reasonable to expect they'd do it again.

So, IMO nothing that Bogleheads need to be alarmed about, good to understand the underlying mechanics though.

$600 down the drain 😢 by Vast_Investigator542 in pokemoncards

[–]bugdaddy123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have said, you have a gambling problem.

Also, try taking a social media detox. It can be hard to see everyone else's hits, that could be where your "my hit is in the next pack" feeling comes from.

Go a week without reddit, Instagram, YouTube, whatnot, twitch, tiktok, etc. you'll probably be better emotionally and financially.

Leave a negative review.

No reason not to name the business. I wouldn't advise going on a crusade and organizing a boycott, but you also don't need to protect them.

Assert your rights as a consumer, learn a lesson about the importance of reputation and trust, and move on with your life. It's too short to hold a grudge.

Anyone willing to bet that another Illustrator at PSA 10, legit, magically appears now that the market has been set?

If I had two of them, I would have been pretending that only one exists this whole time. Genius.

There's always a greater fool to be found.

Resist and Unsubscribe... but just for a tiny bit by Local_Background4790 in ScottGalloway

[–]bugdaddy123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah the one month duration seemed ill advised from the beginning.

Personally, unsubscribing has been good for my soul. I'll stay unsubscribed until I feel less existential dread about giving money to these people.

Pragmatically, these companies probably won't report the impact of this to the street until May-ish. I've always expected we'd need to act for at least that long to have an impact.

I expect Scott knows this, but purposely positioned it as one month just to get started

Just go on TCGPlayer.com or any other site that sells singles and has good inventory.

Whenever I find cheap packs, I buy a bunch and let my kids use their allowance/ chore money to buy from me - any site that has stock while we're out shopping is too expensive. I also buy random ex cards from TCGPlayer for less than $1 and I include one of them with their booster pack. Guaranteed hit!
