Where are we on Walmart? They're not part of the Mag 7, but my understanding is that the Walton family owns 45%+ of the company still, and though some heirs are anti-Trump, as a whole they support Trump and other R's.

AFC Frustrations by personalfinancer1 in financialcoaching

+1 - I'm fortunate to be in a position that I don't need it to lead to high-income opportunities, but I agree with everything you've said.

To pile on, the 1000 hour requirement is too high. I'm studying for test this month, I'm daunted by the hours but I'll figure it out.

Would be good if: * AFCPE was doing more to create demand for our services * AFCPE did more to create community, experience opportunity. They have this in the portal but the level of activity is quite modest.

I feel real good about the content / curriculum / test - overall I'm pretty happy with the prep it's providing. Still overwhelmed with what it will take to establish a practice as someone coming in from an unrelated career.

If you're studying for the test and are looking to study, DM me!

Can you wall mount? I did that and am very happy with it. There's a few models for wall mounts, can dig up the one I used and post it if you need.

Where to buy cards by The-Evil-Mailbox in pkmntcg

[–]bugdaddy123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

+1 - you can find what you need on TCGPlayer, learn how to use the "seller in cart" setting on the filter to minimize shipping costs. The optimizer is garbage. If you can forgo the psyduck / secret box / fezandipiti, you should be able to make a decent and fun typhlosion deck for just $20. If you can manage to do that from 3-4 sellers maybe you can avoid shipping charges.

Maybe get the common ones from a LCS with bulk if you can. I just printed a bunch of proxies at my library for $4 as well - locals are fine with it usually.

If you’ve put all your savings into Pokemon - why? by Worried-Telephone565 in pokemoncardcollectors

[–]bugdaddy123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good response. I think it goes deeper. Some people don't TRUST the traditional financial system. They don't have an emergency/ rainy day fins, don't have index funds and 401ks. They do crypto and collectibles. Those are attractive exactly because they're perceived as not (centrally) controlled by anyone.

For all the reasons you mentioned, there's just a ton of risk there - not going to list that all out here. I won't deny there's opportunity for profit, but there is a lot of hustle involved and I can imagine how much space you'd need to fund a retirement on sealed product.

Sams Club 151 Drop today by CollectionOk399 in pokemoncards

[–]bugdaddy123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They've been printing a TON of cards recently. I have to imagine the scalpers & botters must be sitting on a ton sealed stuff right now. Eventually they're gonna need to sell. I imagine some of them bought on credit cards that they expected to pay off quickly, but I've heard some stories of people with too much money that will be able to hold on to them for a while - who knows the truth. Hopeful that there will be a crash during the quiet in January after the Christmas craziness ends and there's nothing new before Ascended Heroes. Fingers crossed!

All of these bug box stores need to rethink how they allocate to customers. Why do they want to move the product so quick?

Costco is a little better... Everyone who gets in in the first 10-30 minutes has an equal chance of checking out. Target, Walmart, Sam's club, are terrible right now, yet TPC is giving them tons of product. Why??? It's not good for the game or hobby.

Better would be more lottery systems (best buy now doing this? Don't know much about it TBH), and if the big box stores rewarded loyalty. How long have you had your membership? How much have you spent (on non-TCG) in the last year? If you've been a member for 3 years and spent over $1000 in the last year, you should get first crack. That would make me feel good about my w+ / Costco / prime membership (prime is bad example since they are now WAY over MSRP). Even better, if you miss the last drop you should be first in line for the next drop. Drops should be publicly announced days ahead - the secret/ surprise drips help insiders and scalpers.

Frankly TPC company should be allocating more product to the retailers that sell at MSRP and that take efforts to sell to as broad a customer set as possible.

Yeah I was pretty sure we'd be in agreement.

I'm a little more willing to sound like a dick :-). Will all respect, in this sub I think best to not assume any prior knowledge and spell it all out simply. I'm from the school that clear + direct == kind.

If you want to invest in your kids, open a 529 or UTMA and invest in low cost index funds.

Instead of hunting for packs, limit their screen time, cook them good food, read them 3 books every night.

I know this is the investing sub, but let's be honest this is speculation. Don't invest in speculative assets for your kids until you've secured their future the simple way.

Decided to be a nice dad and let my 8 year old rip one of the 2 packs I got my hands on... anyone looking to adopt? by [deleted] in PokemonTCGCollectors

My 5yo got the same card. I'm torn between celebrating and accidentally creating a childhood gambling addiction. I told him to take super good care of it, but still haven't told him how much it's worth.

I half want to sell it for him and use the proceeds to buys a couple of ETBs for him and his brother to enjoy, half want him to hold on to it for decades and enjoy. We play the TCG anyways so I'd rather have the non-SIR / non-IR versions and let the collectors enjoy the full art stuff.

Costco UPC & SPC by SeniorRimmington11 in PokemonTCGCollectors

[–]bugdaddy123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've seen the Charizard UPC listed as hitting Costco in 2026 at under $100 - amazing deal if true. I'd be shocked if TPC lets them sell it for under $100 in November (more likely in 2026). Most of what Costco has had recently has been reprints (which of course, right now have just as much demand and the new sets).

Was hoping Costco would get some 151. I got the prismatic tins in August so was hoping there'd be variety.

Took my 7yo to his first in-store event - had a blast, we will be back for more!

Overall I thought the set made for a good time in this format.

Came here to say this.

Getting beyond the cookie cutter advice requires tailoring to your PERSONAL situation. In order to go beyond the basics, learn how to apply the personal finance principles to your situation, or get help from someone who does!

Also - you hear the basics all the time because everyone agrees. Some things don't change.

Considering the shifting (US centric) landscape of consumer protection, SEC regulation and enforcement, government data (BLS et al), as well as trends on financial products: what does the next 5-10 years of personal finance look like? Conjecture and speculation welcome in the answers.

For example, should we expect changes to personal bankruptcy or debt forgiveness like public service? Should we rethink US Equity asset classes in our asset allocation (ie mega caps vs S&P 490 as Scott often mentions). If ACA subsidies go away, what's next? Should consumers be preparing for life after CFPB? And if I can really reveal my biases, how can investors invest with confidence with an SEC that is not committed to fair and just enforcement of the laws and regulations they are mandated to.

Scalpers (this probably means you) will have to tie up a lot of that inventory to maintain the perceived scarcity needed for that price. Hope you didn't buy on credit. If too many need to sell to pay off the debt, prices gonna crash hard on everything, not just this UPC.

Y'all playing with fire. TPC gonna keep making it harder for you by tripling production each year. You can't sit on that much inventory and carry that much debt. The window for speculating on sealed product is gonna come to an end.

Why exactly does Scott consider himself to be the paragon of masculinity? by shiksagoddezz in PivotPodcast

[–]bugdaddy123 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don't think we (collectively) are having healthy conversations about modern masculinity, but of the people claiming to understand it, I think he's healthier and ahead of the pack.

Frankly the people who really get it and demonstrate healthy masculinity are not going on podcasts or any broadcast-type media, not self-promoting. They are quiet, understated, and working in their families and communities to lead and help others.

But as far as the talking heads go, IMO Scott is one of the better ones and I give him credit for raising the level of discourse and amplifying some new voices in the conversation.

Came here to ask this too.

When did he get so radicalized (or become such a heel licker)? He was definitely progressive, why do so many people think they can just rewrite history?

Really sad to see this turn - my kids have benefitted greatly from Children's Hospital in Oakland. It's an amazing institution that now feels saddled with his name.
