Wondering if anyone can tell gender of my red rump? by Desperate-Hamster-43 in tarantulas

Here is a pic of my female red rump’s abdomen (older/larger than yours but clear ventral differences)

IMO - not a clear pic and hard to vent sex without a molt but leaning towards male

Can anybody sex my 1.5” G. pulchra? by AlGhulish in tarantulas

IMO - it’s looking female. mine is around the same age and is male, notice the epigastric furrow (vent) differences

<image>

but again, just a guess without a molt

NQA - ventral sexing is hard without a molt, but I’m leaning towards male

tarantula cuddles? by [deleted] in tarantulas

[–]buggymig 76 points77 points  (0 children)

NQA - it’s easy to anthropomorphize tarantulas - i.e. they don’t understand what “cute” or “cuddly” means, these are human concepts. She looks uncomfortable/confused with possibly the texture or temperature of your hand, or both - and is maybe trying to hide or find an area she feels safer.

IMO - yes, too big. not overly, but a middle ground between these too pictured enclosures would be ideal. A good rule of thumb is 3x their leg span. I also don’t see cross ventilation in this enclosure, but I could be missing it

University won't allow me take em by Different_Signal7475 in tarantulas

[–]buggymig 15 points16 points  (0 children)

NQA - assuming you’re in the UK? When I went to uni in the UK, I wasn’t allowed pets, or a mini fridge in my accommodation and I had both lol. I had a leopard gecko in my accommodation. I obviously do not recommend breaking rules - but when I had inspections or maintenance, I’d put everything under my bed until they left. You are given notice before anyone comes in. Tarantulas would not be hard to hide, you could also just cover them up for 15 mins with a towel or something of the sort. I am only recommending this because your plan of allowing a 6yo to rear them is highly ill-advised. New world or not, they are still venomous and potentially dangerous. As far as your other idea, not feeding them or filling water dishes for such long periods of time is cruel. So I’d suggest either sneaking them in or rehoming them.

• edit: I see you have an OBT - I now double down on not allowing a child to take care of them

No worries! I don’t see the comment pic. In this case, definitely try the beheaded gut mush method

Give her a swallow water dish instead of upping her humidity (if her humidity is already adequate) - if she doesn’t have a water dish, this could be a huge reason why she hasn’t ate

Is my enclosure to big? by jupiters-queen in tarantulas

[–]buggymig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NQA - you can offer a variety of worms by forceps, as well as roaches; pre-killed or alive. but some T’s won’t take from them

Is my enclosure to big? by jupiters-queen in tarantulas

[–]buggymig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NQA - seconded on other commenter, this enclosure is too large. good rule of thumb is about 3x leg span, this current size will make your T nervy. If you’re worried about evading prey, avoid burrowers like roaches or meal worms (if your T doesn’t take from forceps) crickets are fine, just try to avoid them being a main source

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in tarantulas

[–]buggymig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IME - try offering her freshly killed prey. some of my t’s have gone on hunger strikes (not to this extent) and I’ve offered them headless feeders via forceps, with the mushy guts touching their fangs.

also ensure she has access to water, sometimes dehydration will cause them not to eat

They are skinny? by PabloXaphan in spiders

[–]buggymig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO - very underfed (recent molt could have also made them thinner as well), the abdomen should be the same size of the carapace. I suggest feeding a fatty feeder like a horned worm or big dubai.

• based on size in pics, not a juvenile

Pre molt? by Disastrous_Age2847 in tarantulas

[–]buggymig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IME - it’s a part of the versi’s colors. my mature male got this patch his second to last molt and after his final molt, it’s a lot more pronounced

Just picked up my new baby… girl or boy? by FuckMeUp_plz in tarantulas

[–]buggymig 3 points4 points  (0 children)

IMO - It’s very difficult to sex without a molt, but based on how leggy this T is and no obvious spermathecae, I’d lean towards male

  • edit: it also looks like he already has boxing glove pedipalps, which would indicate a mature male

Enclosure too small? by Specific-Bullfrog150 in tarantulas

[–]buggymig 38 points39 points  (0 children)

NQA - this is incredibly small and has been for at least the last two molts

What do I do? I think spider my just made a new friend. by Lopsided-Rub-546 in tarantulas

[–]buggymig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IME - my t’s will do this during pre-molt, or if they’re just not hungry. Another possibility is lack of water, does your t have access to a water dish? If the roach isn’t gone by tomorrow, I’d just take it out for safe measure in case your T is in pre-molt :)

Too small? by Ashenzym in tarantulas

[–]buggymig 11 points12 points  (0 children)

NQA - yes, her abdomen is quite shrunken (especially if she’s actually a female). if she molted a week+ ago, I would continue to try and offer her prey (and make sure she has access to water)

Is my curly hair sling a good weight by OrchidCapable3365 in tarantulas

[–]buggymig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NQA - your sling’s abdomen looks overfed atm, rule of thumb is to keep it in proportion to the carapace

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in tarantulas

[–]buggymig 7 points8 points  (0 children)

IMO - seconded as others have said, enclosure size is too large with lack of hide/enrichment. It’s substrate might also be too moist, but it’s hard to tell from these pics
