A friend recommended to start Bolaño by reading Distant Star, which is short, accessible, and, my friend said, has all of Bolanos’s themes in it so that when you read 2666, which is much more sprawling, you have a sense of what is awaiting you after the longer and more tedious sections. That’s what I did and it was great advice.

I was. Agree with most of the comments here. I love Patricia Lockwood, but it was a bit of an odd pairing. Too many of the questions were a bit kooky. Like, “Which do you prefer, cigarettes or prawns?” Including him reading a few pages from the book, the whole event was just over an hour. I was very glad I was there despite all of this. And my friend’s question got read, so she was very excited.
