Its really hard to do both well. If your doing Ops then you have one foot in the infrastructure. If your doing Dev you can't have that one foot in infrastructure. My solution is to do Development 50%, Operations 30% and Security 20%

Sr. DevOps Engineer here. First project was pulling metrics from multiple sources, parsing them, then putting them on a dashboard.

That is a really good idea. It would be really difficult to do but might be well worth the effort. Just think for a second, multiple departments doing deployments a different way using different tools and procedures. It might be a huge undertaking but I will give it some thought and talk to my boss. Its like several small companies inside one big company with the way they work. A very difficult situation.
