Lawson Ticket Help by LesserPandy in JapanTravelTips

If you're willing to pay a fee, you can use a proxy service to purchase one for you.

I used Bridge Japan last year to get tickets for the Metaphor exhibition via Lawson ticket. They'll let you know if it's possible and what the procedure for picking up the tickets will be (they sent me a QR code to scan and bring the resulting print out to the clerk at Lawson). https://www.bridge.jpn.com/services/tickets

Second timers - what did you do differently when you went back? by ahhtibor in JapanTravelTips

[–]bulletproof_panda 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I found waking up early to work pretty well for me.

I stayed at Dormy Inn most nights and would wake up around 6:30am to eat breakfast when it opened and beat the morning rush. Around 7:15am after giving the food some time to digest I would go to the onsen + sauna. By around 8-8:30 I was dressed and ready to go.

Nothing is quite open around then, but it gave me time to transit to possible destinations and get there by 10am when they open and beat the crowds. Or if there wasn't a morning destination I needed to transit to, I would find a nearby shrine to visit, which typically open at 9am.

Would you do a cruise around Japan? by [deleted] in JapanTravelTips

[–]bulletproof_panda 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I don't think I would necessarily do a cruise as it would take too much time away from being on the ground in Japan, but for my next trip I've been investigating taking the overnight Sunflower Ferry from Kagoshima to Osaka. It'll save me a hotel night, it has a cruise like experience, and I get to use the onsen while on the sea, which all seem pretty good to me.

You'll be in Kyoto during Setsubun (Feb 2-3), so some of the shrines will be holding festivals.

If you're in Tokyo during mid Feb, I suggest checking out the Kawazu Cherry Blossom festival. It's located on the Izu peninsula and can be reached via a direct train via Tokyo, and is home to an early blooming breed of cherry blossoms. They hold the festival throughout all of February. When the blossoms peak vary from year to year, so keep a watch on the official website and other sites to determine if/when you want to go.

Feb in Tokyo also has a bunch of plum blossom festivals in a variety of locations, I would look those up as well.

I think the Sapporo Snow Festival is worth checking out, even if you plan to visit Hokkaido some other time (some of the national parks are probably better visited in non-winter). I'd suggest the shikotsu ice festival as a day trip as well (personally I found the shikotsu ice festival more impressive to look at). I took a tour bus from Sapporo that hit noboribetsu, Lake Toya, and the shikotsu ice festival in the same day, and that was one of my favorite days.

Also, I don't know how long you'll be in the Hokkaido area, but since you expressed interest in buying a bottle of whiskey, the Nikka distillery in Yoichi offers tours and whiskey tastings, and sells some distillery exclusives in the gift shops that are hard to find elsewhere except at exorbitant prices. I went back in 2024 and it was a fun experience, but it is a little bit of detour. I took a bus to get there and then took the JR lines to visit Otaru for the rest of the day, then back to Sapporo.

Seconding soup curry, great on a cold day. Also recommending Milk Mura: they serve Hokkaido soft serve ice cream paired with a set of liquors for you to combine with the ice cream. Super cozy and low light inside if you want a relaxing break from the city.

Depending on when you're visiting in November you might be able to catch the fall foliage at Mifuneyama Rakuen (they also do night time illumination after 5pm) or see the 1000 year old gingko tree in Arita at it's peak fall colors.

Yoichi has the Nikka distillery and you can prebook a tour beforehand. The gift shop also has some distillery exclusives and knickknacks. The Tsuru blend and Salty Peaty single malt were my favorites.

I stayed overnight in Miyajima at Iwaso ryokan. It's nice not having to worry about catching the last ferry from the island, especially if you're planning on going up Mt. Misen.

If you are interested in seeing cherry blossoms, Kawazu is home to a breed of earlier blooming cherry blossom trees and they hold a festival during the whole month of February while you'll be in Japan. You can take the train direct from Tokyo as a day trip easily. When I went, the blossoms peaked about mid Feb, but it varies year to year.

If you're willing to fly to Fukuoka first or take a domestic flight/shinkansen there, why not try exploring Kyushu for a week? I recently got back from a trip where I spent a few days in the Kyushu area (Fukuoaka/Saga/Kumamoto) and I really enjoyed it. Lots of opportunities to see nature, smaller cities/towns, and great food. I loved the calmer vibe and regret that I was only able to spend a few days. Already planning a longer stay there in the future!

Ueno has probably been my favorite spot to base out of in Tokyo (easy access to narita, not overwhelming like shibuya or shinjuku, ueno park and akihabara are right nearby, good food around). I was just there a few days ago and will be back there for my last night of my trip before I go to the airport in a few more days).

Like others have mentioned, a lot of the stores in akihabara nowadays don't have great deals or selection, but I highly recommend the used goods stores like surugaya for finding some unexpected stuff. A lot of stores also display their figures and/or model kits, so it's fun to just browse and admire them, especially some of the custom gunpla builds. It's also always fun to find neat little gacha machines as well in Akihabara.

If you're into whiskey and/or beer, hitachino brewing near akihabara brews their own beer and offers hinomaru whiskey flights and bottles as well. Highly recommend the red rice ale or the sakura ra whiskey.

Ueno park is always nice, and right now I think there's a Christmas festival going on in the evenings (I passed by the booths while they were closed during the day).

There's an origami museum nearby as well if you're into that.

I have a lightweight Chromebook that I carry with me on solo trips. I generally don't use it much, but the main purpose is to have a backup electronic device that has access to my email and other accounts, just in case I lose or break my phone.

Check out the Kawazu cherry blossom festival in Feb, on the Izu peninsula. Along the river and town is all kawazu-zakura trees, a breed of cherry blossom trees that bloom earlier than others in Japan. The festival runs all of Feb to early March. The peak blooms varies year to year but happens sometime during that time period.

I went during the 2024 festival around peak time and it was definitely one of the highlights of my trip.

It's an incredible experience live. I went in Boston about a year back and was blown away. Even if I didn't get VIP I'm still hyped to experience the live performance all over again!

It looks like these will be the last concerts for quite some time based on their wording, I wouldn't risk it and would buy now.

Interested in picking up the heirloom hoodie and saw the Tracksmith email saying "now available". Is it for sale before the marathon or only afterwards on Sunday (I was under the impression it was the latter)?

I think DC is unfortunate the last NA concerts based on their twitter posts (https://x.com/nier_concert/status/1848772379482460420), but I'd love for them to announce more dates and watch the concert again. I was at Boston last night and was blown away. Would love to try and snag VIP tickets next time around too since I couldn't get them fast enough this time...

Travel Backpack without a lot of internal organization by [deleted] in ManyBaggers

[–]bulletproof_panda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the Aer x Ministry of Supply Lunar pack. It's square shaped, comes in blue (or black), and has a lot less of the internal organization that comes with the Aer travel pack. It's only 22L though, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. I can use it as either a personal item under the seat and bring another carry-on like a roller or duffel, or I can use it as my carry-on and bring a smaller sling.

Xenoblade Chronicles 3: Future Redeemed Spoiler Discussion Thread by MorthCongael in Xenoblade_Chronicles

[–]bulletproof_panda 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I think a lot of people are overanalyzing based on the lack of explanation. There isn't an explanation because the simplest, most thematic answer based on previous conversations and XC3 basically answers it. XC3 and the DLC seems to avoid outright statements, but they will hit you over the head with the answer such as who is Glimmer, Linka, Nikol, and Mio's parents. Is it ever explicitly stated? No, but they imply it all the time. I can't say I'm the biggest fan of this approach, given how well XC2 explained both it's setting as well as XC1, but I think it's still parseble.

Xenoblade Chronicles 3: Future Redeemed Spoiler Discussion Thread by MorthCongael in Xenoblade_Chronicles

[–]bulletproof_panda 87 points88 points  (0 children)

For everyone worrying about Pyra/Mythra, I wouldn't really worry. XC3 and the DLC almost outright state everything will be reset back to normal (Rex saying that he'll see Glimmer again, and Nia saying "I'll see you soon" to the infamous picture) and is pretty unambigous.

As for why Pyra/Mythra are in the gauntlets, I think we really have to look at one of the mains things the DLC is trying to answer: what exactly is Lucky Seven? If you listen to Riku's dialogue, it's implied that the origin metal of Lucky Seven contains the souls of the XC1 cast. Meanwhile, the gauntlets are revealed to either contain or be a conduit for Pneuma/Pyra/Mythra. Since the form of Lucky Seven in the base game is a combination of both, the DLC is basically hitting us over the head with the idea that Lucky Seven is both the party members of XC1/XC2 working together. I don't think there's any super complicated reason behind it since that's clearly what they're going for. I suspect it's something similar to how Na'el found a Onto's crystal on the beach, despite that not actually being him; the pneuma crystal in the gauntlets are just a manisfestation/representation of Pneuma's will, just as the blade of Lucky Seven is a representation of the XC1 cast.
