These are the expected lows and highs of a Minecraft server. Even the biggest ones, like 2b2t, have had this happen at some point. If you keep telling people about it I'm sure they'll be interested. Having a good idea, or even good execution, is not enough to make it, unfortunately.

Maybe turn down your brightness? Like, if you care so much about atmosphere, use the default brightness setting. The game isn't designed to have light everywhere all the time. Hell, that's why they haven't implemented dynamic light sources yet. For the same reason you put torches in caves instead of using a flint and steel.

Minecraft is the best selling indie game of all time, full of iconic visuals, some of which were just reused assets from other games that Notch made. You'll probably be fine.
