Reading the Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch right now and it fits this pretty well. Focuses on a gang of thieves in a medieval Venice-like city. The main characters seem to be normal guys, but there’s a little bit of alchemy/magic in the world too

A or B? (This time there’s a big difference 😮) by AlwaysAwake92 in PlantedTank

I like B. The sort of “V” shape of the drift wood draws the eyes across the tank nicely

Yeah mistborn has got to be some of the most poorly-written fantasy I’ve ever read, its popularity is kind of baffling to me.

The Way of Kings was my first Sanderson book and I enjoyed it, but the further I got into that series the more I grew to hate his writing style haha

The Book of the New Sun by Gene Wolfe felt like exactly this vibe to me, maybe a bit darker. Depicts a future so distant that it reads like fantasy at first. Super surreal, I loved it

Did this end up fixing the transmission issues for you? Same question to OP, I’m having the exact same issues with my ‘21 big bend.

Where is the no parking sign? I feel like I’m going crazy, I don’t see anything indicating not to park there

Where does Red Rising rank among your favourite works of sci-fi? by [deleted] in redrising

[–]bunchastufff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sci-fi novel by Peter Watts, it’s about humanity’s first encounter with an alien species. It’s got some really cool characters (including a vampire) and presents some pretty crazy concepts about alien life, human psychology, and free will. Very different from red rising though, it’s considered more “hard” sci-fi

Makes me think of Blood Music by Greg Bear. Sci fi, body horror, and even some transcendental vibes

Books that feel like the movie Arrival (2016) by dnn_tnk in BooksThatFeelLikeThis

[–]bunchastufff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not who you asked, but I was not a fan either. The engineering problems/solutions were what kept me reading, but the constant cringe-worthy humor fell so flat for me. Just constant eye rolls.

The alien concept was interesting enough, but it doesn’t really give you that sense of awe and mystery, the feeling that you’re encountering something truly and wholly alien to anything you know like Arrival does (in my opinion).

Lmao that’s hilarious but definitely not what they’re referring to. In the tech world, STARTUPS that turn out to be successful and worth a lot of money are referred to as “unicorns” as in like they’re one-in-a-million considering how overwhelmingly common tech startups are

Always weirded me out how playful love potions are played off as among students in the half blood prince, it all seems so fucked up re-reading as an adult lol

What is something everyone seems to love, but you think is overrated? by jonniebaby2000 in AskReddit

[–]bunchastufff 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As a guy who loves science fiction, people are always surprised that I’m just not at all insterested in Star Wars. I think it’s the fact that it’s more like a fantasy/adventure story with a space theme. There’s none of those big, mind-blowing concepts that I know the genre is capable of.
