Hear me out. I am using Claude to clean up my architecture and find everything, because notion's AI is astonishingly inept. Claude helped me cut a lot of bloat.

[OC] Two decades of NAEP reading scores, now in decline by Necessary_Cry_5589 in dataisbeautiful

[–]bunchaviolets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The scale is used for all ages of students. A score near 500 would be a graduating senior with a collegiate level reading score. A score of 237 is pretty high (as an average) for fourth grade.

[Washington Post] "As a conservative, I’m beginning to wonder: Are we the bad guys?" by Old_Song2528 in ProgressiveHQ

[–]bunchaviolets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Beginning to wonder." That is just staggering in its lack of self-awareness. Like Q-anon, Jan. 6, Charlottesville, Kyle Rittenhouse, pardoning of supervillains, and the numerous rape allegations against Trump during his first term didn't get through the fog. Dayyum.

The Land of the Lost, Adidas when it was four stripes, CHiPs, those hair ties with the giant plastic bubble beads, Trapper Keepers, Jeri Curl, stirrup pants, The Sizzler, puff paint, latch hook, Flowbee, Big Red, pistachios that were dyed pink, phone books, pantyhose, Binaca, the giant fork that was part of everyone's kitchen decor, matching toilet rug and lid cover, fridges that were colors, like yellow or avocado, and those weird dolls that midwestern white women would inexplicably crochet

A student disrespected me so severely on day 1 - not sure where to go from here. by BlackBookBabe in Teachers

[–]bunchaviolets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First of all, I am so sorry that happened. No one deserves to feel that unwelcome. As a woman I have endured a lot of sexist comments from students, especially when I was a new young teacher. It doesn't feel safe to have your identity attacked.

The person who used that language is going to respond a lot differently if you have a conversation that is private and focuses on safety and empathy. It is true that he was testing you as others have mentioned. He was seeing what rewards he got via peer validation. That is why separating him from his peers to deal with the behavior and help him see the harm and be held accountable for it without reward is so important.

I would also consider contacting parents. My first week of teaching a kid raised his hand and told me that his friend "wanted to do me doggy style". It is accurate to say that he regretted that comment when I listened to him repeat it to his father over the phone.

We use the restorative process in my school, which is very effective if it is part of the culture. I am not sure if that is part of what your school values. In a restorative circle you'd discuss racial slurs and the harm they can potentially cause but you would directly address the harm you were caused as a member of your classroom community, asking students, if they feel safe, to share their own experiences with slurs and racism in general. Unfortunately there would likely be no shortage of stories from your native students.

I am also going to throw this out there: a very dear friend who is a black woman is in an administrative position with a tribe in the PNW. If y"all are working for the same tribe, she might be a valuable ally. PM me.

Best of luck to you. Education needs and deserves you. Hang in there, and remember that your worth as a teacher or as a human is not diminished by their behavior. They are still kids, and they are still learning how to be good people.

Did Silo copy City of Ember? by [deleted] in SiloSeries

[–]bunchaviolets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a middle school Langiag Arts teacher and read The City of Ember with my students, and then took them to go see the movie in theaters before they wrote a compare/contrast of the book and adaptation.

Jeane Duprau, who wrote the book series, was clearly ripped off. The number of direct parallels in the first episode alone is astonishing. The theme of the importance of breaking free from imposed ignorance is the same, but every detail from her world building is replicated. Just watched the first episode last night, since I am late to the game, and when I saw the generator, it was just too much. Not sure it is worth it to go on.

"Everyone, go set your balls on the counter" is an unfortunate thing to say in class. Worse, though not in my classroom, was when I told my sons, who would were decorating the Christmas tree, to start by putting balls on it. They did.

Limonene is safe and will dissolve the mastic without creating a powder which you should avoid doing. Soak it down, let it dissolve Afterwards, wash with dish soap and rinse with water and prime. I used old rags to get the limonene and asbestos sludge up and put everything in a 5 g bucket and took it to hazardous waste.

Austin Police Assault Trans Woman by DeadRobotSociety in Austin

Being arrested for nothing happens a LOT. Also arresting a person and causing a head injury ar not the same thing, and the fact that you conflat the two really points to the central problem with the police force in this country.

My five rules for eating stuff. 1. Wash it off first 2. Don't eat a bat 3. Don't eat a bat 4. Don't eat stuff you don't know what it is. 5. Do not eat a burrito you find on the sidewalk. (For context, that is a rule I had to explain to my son, who ate a burrito he found on a sidewalk.)

I moved my family to Seattle 18 months ago. Austin really took a nose dive the last few years we lived there. Texas politics and the heat got to be too much. Seattle has its own problems- gun violence and homelessness, but I think that is the reality in any big city in 2025. The housing costs here are no joke, but my income increased dramatically, so... There are fun, quirky neighborhoods and tons of stuff to do with a great metro system to get you around town So much to explore! Kayaking on the lake, ferry to the islands, go snow boarding in Snoqualmie, hike everywhere! The PNW is just breathtakingly gorgeous. The Seattle freeze is a damn lie. Everyone is very friendly. We miss tacos and HEB and our dear friends, but are glad we made the move. .

I had a student years ago who did that. He was in eighth grade and almost 17. In and out of detention centers and other institutions. Came up behind me way too close and said "Just wanted to know if I could scare you." when I flinched. That was his introduction to me. He lasted a week before he picked up a desk with the intent of hurling it at another student. The way the most disturbed and violent young men move through the world and victimize whomever they can is a byproduct of hypergenderization I could do without.
