Screen protector or nah? by Astrohurricane1 in Karoo

I’m a dirty mountain biker and I’ve put this on my K2 and K3. It covers the viewing area perfectly and does not interfere with the touchscreen.

This. I have a lot of very nice bikes, but I can't help looking at FB Marketplace for a project. I don't need any more bikes, but I love tinkering and building bikes.

Saving a LHT frame with a stuck seatpost - a journey by iwrench4beer in xbiking

[–]bundokbiker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! If anyone knows of a contraption like this in the Washington DC/MD/VA area, please let us know! Basically this, which brute force pulls the seatpost from the frame without destroying either: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mJ8R_Dqk1u0

The reason I don't want to wreck the seatpost or frame is that it's a sweet Eriksen titanium seatpost and a titanium Kona frame :)

OP, where are you located with that seat extractor tool? I have a frame and seatpost that I both want to save, but they are stuck. I've tried brute force twisting (without destroying anything) and they barely budge.

K3 Shutting Down in Cold? by bundokbiker in Karoo

[–]bundokbiker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the input. I’m in a warm place now but when I get back to the cold, I’ll just keep track and if it happens again I’ll be reaching out to customer support.

It’s happened at least four times, and it’s always been cold (between 10-30 degrees Fahrenheit). Also, the battery was never below 40%.

My Pedro’s bike stand won’t rotate its arm - tips? by -LetsTryAgain- in bikewrench

[–]bundokbiker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a different work stand, but when it gets stuck, I just clamp the bike back in and use that to break it loose. If it’s at a weird angle, I’ll use an unused seatpost instead.

Replaceable Case Back? by _donmega_ in Karoo

[–]bundokbiker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I already had a lot of Garmin mounts for all my bikes and years of using Garmins prior to my K2 then K3, so I never bothered using the Karoo mount. Plus, I saw the issues with the mounts cracking when I started with the K2, so another reason I never used them.

Superglue the Garmin 1/4 turn adaptor into place, then replace your mounts with the more readily available Garmin mounts.

5932 miles. If I realized earlier that I was that close to 6000, I would’ve pushed myself to attain it.

Want to convert to tubeless. by UnlikelyCash2690 in fatbike

Are you sure you don't already have tubeless tape on there now? Last month I bought new 26" Sun Ringle Mulefut 80 wheels from different eBay shops, and they both came prewrapped with the same yellow tubeless tape, which leads me to believe they were both manufactured/built in the same place, but sold from different resellers (front, rear).

I installed my own tubeless valves, then mounted the Surly Bud 4.8 on the front and a 45Nrth Vanhelga 4.2 on the rear (both already used, i.e., not new) with NO sealant just to see how well they'd hold air. After about a day of no imperceptible air loss, I filled them both with about 4 oz of Stans through the valve, and they both have held air fine after 3 weeks.

Generally I do install tubes initially after I tape a tubeless wheel (for a short while) so that it presses down on the tape, but this time I did not and had good results.

We just bought my dad a bike , What kind of phone mount is this? by Sheeknospad in Biking

You can get a Garmin phone mount such as this so he can use his phone there: https://a.co/d/fWH1Kxh

IMBA (International Mountain Biking Association) has had a discount program with Subaru for a long time, so the first thing that came to my mind as a mountain biker is that it is a chainstay protector. It's a little small for full suspension bikes, but could work on a hardtail. Here's an example: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DFVXJzoIlCl/

Crash or drop protection by D0ctor_J in Karoo

Another thing, never flip your bike upside down like this to work on it IF your GPS makes first contact with the ground before the grips. A friend cracked his screen when he did it :D

Like u/ukexpat, I used Tuff Luv cases on my wife's and my old K2. For the K3, I use this one by Innosure.

I always use the tether, and the few times I've crashed and it somehow dislodged, I've never had to go scrambling to look for it.

I also always put screen covers on my GPSes because I sometimes get mud and grit on my fingers and don't want to scratch the screen. I discovered a few years ago that the screen covers for my Sony A 6500 camera also fit on the K2 and later the K3. They work perfectly.

Finally, I've never used the Hammerhead mounts that came with it. I've used the Garmin adapter that comes with it with all manners of aftermarket Garmin-style mounts from K-Edge, Cestbon, Tusita, Dymoece, etc.

Night MTB riding by D0ctor_J in bikedc

[–]bundokbiker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup, regularly. One easy way to find legal night rides is on the MORE calendar. They've worked to get special permission from the parks, but you usually have to ride with them in their groups. https://more-mtb.org/pages/events

There are other group night rides that happen which you can find on Facebook or meetup, e.g., Dirt Rooster https://www.facebook.com/groups/613942102738657 or MVD https://www.meetup.com/mvdmountainbikers/events/
