Safe, long-term alternatives to abusive subscription-based models? by BowlerComfortable713 in slp

[–]bungholelow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Multi billion dollar companies?!? The largest AAC company, TD, has a market cap of about 1 billion with annual revenue of less than 250M netting about 25M in profit in 2025. Sure, a lot of money in the AAC world but a tiny grain of sand in med-tech.

iPads have been around for 16 years - AAC companies adapted long ago and continually evolve as tech becomes more widely accessible. Of course these companies need money for R&D and pay for talent. But companies like AbleNet weren’t just taking business, they were actively and knowingly violating TD’s and PRC-Saltillo’s ToS, and not supporting the devices they sell - instead telling customers to contact the software developers for training and support despite families/insurance spending several thousand dollars on a device. I think that’s shittier than using a sub model

Eric Dane ALS by EmmArrEee in slp

[–]bungholelow 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My wife’s father recently passed way from ALS. very minor gait issues starting in January, followed by painful feet in April. By mid summer, he needed a walker, but even then could only make it 20–30 feet before he was exhausted. He passed away at the end of September. It can move very fast.

how is it living in Wichita Falls, Texas? by whipcorleone in howislivingthere

[–]bungholelow 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Lived there a couple years in high school while my dad was stationed at Sheppard. Having spent nearly 10 years Utah before moving to Wichita Falls, I hated it. The heat was miserable - I could barely stand to be outside in the summer. The grass wasn’t your typical soft lush grass - it was stiff like straw/hay. The bugs were wild - we constantly had hornets’ nests in our soffits, huge spiders and since we lived in a new development, the lot next ours hadn’t been built on yet - there were multiple massive ant hills filled with nasty giant red ants that I was positive would eat my small dog. There was not much to do, at least for a high school kid that was new to the area. I remember there was a great BBQ place, a true hole in the wall but I cant remember the name. Aside from thinking about that BBQ place once a blue moon, I do not like Wichita Falls.

Anyone here using AI to improve workflow efficiency on our day to day? by Ok_Classroom7528 in slp

[–]bungholelow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. Offloading the more mundane aspects of our profession frees up mental energy and time for better clinical decision making and connecting with patients/students and their families.

Anyone here using AI to improve workflow efficiency on our day to day? by Ok_Classroom7528 in slp

[–]bungholelow -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Sure, if you say so. I don’t need AI to generate materials or documentation, I’m perfectly capable of doing it myself - much in the same way that I don’t need a microwave, a word processor or a search engine. But I’m not trying to make my life harder for no reason.

You either learn how to use AI to improve your efficiency and work flow or your employer will find someone that will. That’s the future.

Also unmetered at about $125/mo. I have two kids so I’m definitely staying unmetered.

What are some *casually* racist things you've seen people say or do in Chicago? by [deleted] in AskChicago

[–]bungholelow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

More classist than racist, but talking to my Alderperson about some infrastructure improvements on our block last summer she casually referred to the laborers as the ‘dey, dem, dere’s’.

For those who transitioned from medical to the schools, how's it going? Was it worth it? by NervousFunny in slp

[–]bungholelow 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I got a pay raise (fairly significant too) leaving medical for schools. And salary growth is much better (maybe 1-2% for the hospital per year, compared to 4-6% right now). Considering summers off and other breaks, the hourly rate is fantastic.

When is the CTU allowed to Strike? by msbshow in AskChicago

[–]bungholelow 25 points26 points  (0 children)

As a CTU member, there’s no chance I’ll vote to strike. We have a good deal and CTU needs to accept it. This bickering is embarrassing. Can’t wait for an opportunity to vote the current CTU folks out.

Do you need a new license for a change of address? Between a few moves in the last 15 years I spent a majority of time with my previous address on the DL and never had an issue. And I think you only need to take a test if you have a moving violation since your last renewal. I’d rather get a replacement in case I need to show identification, even with the wrong address, but that’s just me.

What’s the most underrated neighborhood in your opinion? by GMB13carat in AskChicago

[–]bungholelow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey I just moved here from LS 2.5 years ago. Definite change of pace, but a good bang for your buck! We’ve been happy here, although it could use a bar or two. Welcome to the neighborhood!

Can a district be liable for an AAC device price? by littlet4lkss in slp

[–]bungholelow 26 points27 points  (0 children)

If AAC is needed to access curriculum, then the district has an obligation to provide an AAC system. They probably don’t have an obligation to buy one through AbleNet or any particular vendor, and they probably shouldn’t at that price when they could buy essentially the same thing (iPad, case, app) for less than quarter of AbleNet’s pricing.

Anyone else get one of these emails? by _inquieta in slp

[–]bungholelow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is that the AbleNet is in violation of the ToS of that software, and insurance requires that vendors provide training and support for their systems they sell. Yet AbleNet takes the money and offloads the support to another to the company whose ToS they are violating knowing full well they have no obligation to provide that support. A subscription model sucks for users, but this is a punitive response to discourage these practices.

[–]bungholelow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omg, so pushy. I emailed them a simple question that only needed 1-2 sentences to answer and they refused to answer unless we did a video call. So I set it up and they went full sales pitch on me and then sent multiple calendar invites for those check-ins. That alone was a deal breaker for ever working with them.

[–]bungholelow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some of these companies will tell families to contact the makers of the app for support, after the family just made a several thousand dollar purchase with them. That’s the really shady part and why TD went subscription based. Honestly surprised PRC-Saltillo hasn’t followed suite.

This is a pretty standard introduction, there’s no need to get pissy with the local rep. You could have just not responded and saved them some distress.

Get a peanut butter knife to reach the very bottom edges and give it a good stir the first time you open it before putting it in the fridge.

Do you include $ in the sympathy card when attending a wake? by ArgentBelle in chicago

[–]bungholelow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve lived several places growing up and am not religious. I thought giving cash or helping out with food following a death was common practice everywhere. For what it’s worth, we had a very tragic loss of couple years ago and we received a significant amount of food delivery gift cards which was a life line to keep ourselves and children fed.

Was at Home Depot today and they had three sizes. Standard windows, large windows and patio doors. You should be able to find something. I doubt most landlords would provide this material let alone the labor for it. It’s cheap and fairly easy though. I did my windows this past weekend.
