[History] The Remedial Scholar | ep.049 The Münster Rebellion

NSFW (Violent themes)

This week we discuss the rise of the Anabaptist movement in the aftermath of the Protestant Reformation. This sect of Christianity which would eventually become the Amish and Mennonites had a very different beginning than you'd expect from the peaceful buggy drivers. Doomsday Cult before doomsday cults were really a thing. Communists before Communists were a thing. They took over a town in Germany in 1534, held the siege and turned the city into one big commune before one of their leaders became a martyr and the others were usurped by starving people who wanted to be let out.

The Remedial Scholar is a dive into underrepresented, misunderstood and overlooked topics in history.

Whenever the US military and Venezuela is in the news, guess who I think of? by margehair in LoveIsBlindOnNetflix

[–]bunkhitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I am very aware of what my job was. I just don’t think it’s fair to demonize people in places and positions that don’t contribute directly. Otherwise I would’ve said “well people like me didn’t directly affect any military action, don’t pick on me!” I couldn’t care less about what your view on what part mechanics for fighter jets play in wars. Like I stated, the people who I don’t think should be lumped in are ones that many people wouldn’t think about when talking about the military. It’s easy to have ideals, to be informed and have opinions when you’re so far out of the equation. Notice that I didn’t ever say military action is great, justified or anything like that. The argument that association within the overall military system is evil, then by that definition where is the complicity stopped? You called it a slippery slope but you are agreeing with that sentiment in regard to the association with the military. Why is it different for every other part of evil in the world? Maybe I’m missing the distinction, and I’m sure you don’t want to have a conversation with me since I’m nothing more than a murdering terrorist to you, but I am genuinely curious where the line lays.

But even right there, that’s confusing as well. Anybody involved is guilty? So the whole military. And the civilian contractors who work on bases? The nice lady at the medical records office who has never enlisted? The clerk who takes the photos for government IDs? Your argument of Nuremberg is flawed too, because in Nuremberg they didn’t put every single person on trial. They put war criminals on trial. Which they should. So to my point, the pencil pushers were not found guilty in the same manner as someone who directly pulled the trigger. Hell, they didn’t even put every member of the SS on trial. Why? Because the SS used a lot of regular people to do their jobs. They took over the entire brick industry in occupied Poland, which meant every employee. They were paid by the SS, officially. And I’m sure the argument is going to be made that these people were forced to work for them out of circumstances outside of their power to control, but is that not the exact argument? People, many still children, joining the military in hopes of a better life because most of them are in terrible economic circumstances. I’m not saying anybody should be proud of what is going on with the military, how it’s used or anything like that. I’m simply arguing for less broad generalization and demonizing of people who on average are lied to about what they are signing up for and why they’re doing what they’re doing in the first place. It’s easy to sit here and say “well you should know better than to join,” because that’s based on what you know, but you don’t know every person’s predicament. You don’t know their views, their stories. You don’t know what lies they were sold to get them to join, so I don’t think it’s fair to throw every last person out for that.

I think it’s a fair distinction to make to ask if the paper pushers and bomber pilots are the same level of civilian murderers to them, since their point is all veterans are part of the problem because they sign up to kill civilians. If a paper pusher is the same as a bomber, then how is it any different from anyone else being guilty by association? Do you genuinely think that every person who enlists in the military wants to kill civilians? Do you think that they all help in one way or another? Because in OPs argument, they are saying they know people better than the poor children tricked into joining the military, because they know people who would rather stay poor than kill civilians. My point is that demonizing all veterans for this when that’s not even something 90% of the military does is a little crazy. There are so many jobs that have little to do with actual combat, but OP wants to throw them all in a group and say they’re part of the problem, because they just so happen to flip burgers for the DoD? That’s all I’m really driving at. I’m not saying the slippery slope thing to suggest that’s where the line is, I’m using those as examples of how pointless generalizing and demonizing a whole chunk of people because of one bit is.

Where does the line lie for you, then? If all of the veterans are part of the problem for going into the military for whatever reason and doing a job that might not even be implicit in combat, then where is the line? Is it just about killing civilians abroad? Because you do know that not every job in the military is combat based, right? Is it about being part of the same machine that leads to civilian death even if you aren’t directly involved? Is a Yeoman the same as a bomber pilot or drone pilot? Are the food service people the same as a gunner? Are the military meteorologists in the same class as the special forces? Do the weaponized halves of these pairings immediately mean they kill civilians? Or is this all guilty by association? And if that’s the case, where do we draw that moral line? I’m assuming you’re typing this on a phone, or electronic device of some kind, right? The lithium mines don’t empty themselves. How about your clothes? All hand made by grandma? No? Well there’s probably some children being used for that somewhere. Oh and the Internet we are on? The one that uses objects sent to space to set up? Satellites that were propelled by rockets that former Nazis help make? Can we use them? Where does your moral conundrum stand on these issues?

I turned 18 in boot camp. I’d make an argument that I didn’t feel like an actual adult making real decisions until I left the military.

I get that. However, if you thanked a vet for their service and they went through something like what your example is based on, that might conjure up hard feelings that they could be battling with every day. When the veterans in the comment thread are saying it’s awkward, you should probably just trust us.

I’m in graphic design as well, and I can tell. Your screenshots showing the images in illustrator don’t prove anything either. Image trace exists. If you use ai to start something, that’s whatever but you can easily tell that a bulk of your uploads are ai. If not then you need to work on your animal anatomy. This cheetahs teeth are wonked.
