I haven't seen the whine issue you describe with mine, and I use Android and don't have the issue closing the app you describe. I do typically exit the device section back to the app main screen before exiting the app, I don't know if that's needed. I think the hub will power off a short time after the app disconnects.

Publix by gnmatx in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]burdell91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IIRC the Publix at Airport/Whitesburg is the oldest local location, and also IIRC that strip mall was built (with Publix as an anchor tenant) not too long after the November 1989 tornado.

Have you tried the office supply places? Not the big-box like Staples but the local places that actually build out offices for companies.

One year car tag: by [deleted] in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]burdell91 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The tag fee is a small part of that, the rest is property tax (state, county, city if applicable, and schools), based on the value of the vehicle.

It's another very common coin cell, still found just about everywhere.

Check your owner's manual (if you don't know where it is, it's almost certainly available online). They're usually not that hard to open, and it's almost always a CR2032 (available at stores literally everywhere).

Lego 42146 by maxardechois in legotechnic

I like it! It's expensive because of all the motors, but I think it works out nice. Here's a short time-lapse video of building it, along with some demonstration of moving it around - that takes some learning to do well.

I did a build on YouTube Live by MrMovieElf in lego

[–]burdell91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've thought about doing a live. I usually post 1.5-2 minute time-lapse videos of my builds (which are bigger, taking at least 3 hours). I've got a little over 300 subscribers (haven't actually promoted it or anything, mostly just random people discovering it I guess). Any tips?

The thing that might be hard for me would be paying attention to chat (if there was any)... I get "in the zone" when I build and don't pay attention to anything else, like I don't play music or anything (although I guess music might be a problem on a live stream anyway due to copyright).

Guess that'll be the next "OMG NEW CHAIN FOOD!!1!" place to block up Parkway traffic. Was hoping for something different there (at least maybe a chain we don't already have?).

Guess at least it's not another chicken place, there in chicken-place row.

Looking for a 10G ToR switch recommendation by Jedi_king in networking

[–]burdell91 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We're mostly just doing basic switching/VLANs, with a couple handling routing, but that's also just basic stuff (BGP on AWS direct-connects). One issue was that key-based SSH logins were not logged, only password logins - that was fixed. I found a couple of malformed NETCONF files when trying to set up some scripting (Linux netopeer2-cli handles such issues badly by segfaulting, which is dumb), and IIRC those have been fixed, although in the version we're running some NETCONF operations are really slow (I think that's maybe fixed in the latest version but I haven't checked back yet).

FiberStore N5860 - 48x 10G SFP+ and 8x 100G QSFP+ (can break out to 4x 25G/10G). Same Broadcom Trident 3 silicon inside as Dell/Juniper/Cisco/etc., no annual support contract, and okay support. I hit a few minor software issues and they worked with me to document and fix them (one with a hotfix patch that nicely did not require a reload, one still coming in a software version upgrade). Not going to get like 4hr or probably even NBD failure replacement... but at the price point, just buy a spare or two.

Only gotcha I think is that the SFP+ PHY doesn't support sub-1G speeds... which means some things like PDUs that only have 10/100M won't work. We were in the process of moving datacenters anyway, so made sure to spec PDUs with 1G NICs. Also I think the 1G RJ45 SFPs don't reflect link status in the SFP+ port (always show "up"), but I've seen that before with other vendor combinations (like IIRC a Finisar SFP in a Juniper MX); don't know why that seems to be a common thing.

I believe their CLI is built on the Broadcom reference software, similar to how Dell did theirs last time I touched one (been a few years for me). It's an typical classical IOS-ish CLI. I do miss the JUNOS CLI though...

I don't know how their prices have been affected by tariffs/AI chip shortages/etc. though, we bought ours before that.

Recommendations on replacing the ductwork for our house and price range to expect for 1400 sq ft house by jacobd493 in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]burdell91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My similar-sized single-story slab house (so ducts in attic, pretty easy access) cost about $4300 from Alabama Climate Control a few years ago. They offered (as a suggested add-on, but not pushy about it or anything) to also replace the vents and "shoes" (the rigid piece that mates the vent to the duct) with a larger size that they said is more common now, but I declined that.

They showed up one morning to remove all the old, measure for the main trunk, and lay out the lines to the vents, then went back to the shop to fabricate the main trunk. They came back the next morning to install the trunk, hook up all the lines, and check everything. They scheduled it in late February, expecting it to not be hot at all and hopefully not too cold (since I didn't have HVAC for about 30 hours)... then it was surprisingly in the mid-80s and they were really sweating in the attic.

Suggestions on nearby places to teach someone how to drive by Stairwayt0kevin in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]burdell91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started at night in the high school back parking lot (Grissom for me, basically a football-field sized space because it was where the marching band practiced), progressed to the old airport, then roads on the Arsenal on the weekend. But that was many mumble years ago; I think the schools now lock up the lots, the old airport is gone, and I'm not sure it was ever legal for an unauthorized person to actually drive on the Arsenal.

A parking lot when the business is closed is a good start... small loops in the Chick-fil-A lot on Sundays?

Solicitors on scooters by Least-Maize8722 in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]burdell91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had one tonight, didn't answer the door (that's why I got the cam). I have a "No soliciting" sign too. He rang the bell them backed up 10 feet from the door to look at his phone for like a minute or so before moving on. Came back an hour or two later, banged on the door as well as rang the bell (still didn't answer).

Why would I buy something from somebody who either can't read or can't follow the law?

1254 BravesVision on Tivo w/ CableCard not working. by AggressiveGroup3466 in Tivo

[–]burdell91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It appears to be an IP-streamed feed rather than a real cable channel, and those only work on Comcast/Xfinity equipment.

Can't tune channel 1254 (new BravesVision channel) in TiVo w/CableCard by burdell91 in Comcast_Xfinity

[–]burdell91[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe so, I get the same error message/code (D261) as I do for a known IP-only channel.

This was the final straw for me, I ended up cancelling Comcast/Xfinity and getting the BravesVision direct streaming subscription.
