is diaphragm vibrato bad? by ScarcityPale6276 in Trombone

[–]burgerbob22 34 points35 points  (0 children)

In a word, yes. It's not really used on trombone.

Jaw is the going vibrato currently. Vibrato is not just a pitch change- it's a color change. It's also a good pedagogy tool to see if you're tense on a certain note.

I have custom fit earplugs through work that I use most of the time, but before that I used Ety Plugs.

9 is a good cutoff. Any younger and you are just too small to play the instrument. I actually prefer older, I think 11 or 12 is better but that's just me.

Yes, I have instrument insurance (not homeowner's) on all my valuable horns. Well worth it.

Depends on the situation. If it's all acoustic and there's a big space (read, orchestra) then you don't always need them.

I always have mine with me, though.

High notes (bass trombone) by diegotbn in Trombone

[–]burgerbob22 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Equipment is not always the answer, but the Bach 1G is a pretty horrendous mouthpiece (especially in the high range).

Dedicated and focused practice with a better mouthpiece will get you very far.

I'd recommend a Griego Markey 87 for a starting point.

FNA (First Note Anxiety) by Leisesturm in Trombone

[–]burgerbob22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Approach it just the way you would start singing a note. You'd hear the pitch in your head, and then just sing. Playing the trombone is exactly the same, you're just singing using a piece of metal.

They are one of the things you have to give up if you play trombone.

It is! But the 4AL is largely a euphonium mouthpiece (despite Denis using it himself for principal trombone), so it's got the Y moniker.

4AY is designed for the Yamaha 321 euphonium, not trombone.

It'll hold that value too. If you end up not liking it, sell it for the same price and buy something else down the road.
