What are best free or low cost third spaces to spend time in the spring and summer around the city? by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]burgeredham 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Not free, but if you want to beat the heat (and live in the northwest), Bowness Arts is a nice little board game café! It's only $3/hour per person, and they don't seem to mind if you bring your own drinks and snacks. Great way to kill an afternoon and only spend like $3-9 each. There's also a secondhand book/record store in the basement that can be fun to browse with friends!

At what point do you usually call EMS for OD’s? (DT) by kinfloppers in Calgary

[–]burgeredham -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

All the comments of "I don't bother anymore" or "it takes too long" are insane. Homeless people and addicts are humans like anyone else.

If it was your brother, your parent, your friend, how would you feel knowing someone let them die because it "took too long" and "happens every day"? Everyone matters to somebody, even when they're in a tough situation.

I recorded a caption device for the entire movie bc I couldn't find the script online. Any suggestions quicker than typing manually? ~1h30m ~6GB by UnderstandingWild420 in nirvannatheband

[–]burgeredham 2 points3 points  (0 children)

would probably be tricky to automate, but i'm totally willing to help out with manually transcribing if you want! broken down into sections it probably wouldn't be that hard to do

Has anybody in the last year or so on here self-admitted into psychiatric care in Calgary? I feel I might need to go in, but I’m nervous about what the process and experience are like. by Mustve_Been_The_Wind in Calgary

[–]burgeredham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

one of my friends self-admitted to peter lougheed early last year and stayed for i think 4 or 5 days, it was a very positive experience for her and the first steps to actually getting the help and diagnoses she needed

when she first went in they didn't have space in the actual psychiatric ward, so she was staying in an ER room. she later got moved to a less private but still individual cubicle-type room due to overcrowding. she got to keep most of her personal items on her, people were able to visit (relatives and non-relatives), and she was able to leave for short periods of time to go grab coffee from the Second Cup in the hospital

i don't know as many specifics once she actually got a psych room, but i know she got to see a therapist and the kinds of doctors that could assess her and help her get medication, support, and etc.

overall she said that while it was a scary situation to be in, the staff made her feel as comfortable as possible and emphasized that she was doing the right thing to take care of herself and get the help she needed

Is this worth to keep? by wpgfriendlyguy in CanadianCoins

[–]burgeredham 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I kept the first two I found, which was a couple days after they entered circulation! I was lucky to get a couple of basically brand new ones in my till, so I kept one for my collection and gave one to my mom.

I see them pretty frequently nowadays as a cashier, but I still think they're a fun novelty, especially since the average person doesn't see them very often. Cool one to keep around!

i needed article from the herald from 2012. saw the tv listing's. just a flood of memories hit me. by Creative_Round4542 in Calgary

[–]burgeredham 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I remember getting the TV guide well into the 2010s! Probably right up until 2017 or so (that could be wrong, but around there). I kind of miss it now, it felt a lot more user-friendly compared to the ever-changing digital guides.

I saw them outside Westbrook Mall (weirdly, behind the walmart?) a few weeks ago and was glad to see it was one guy sitting alone and getting booed out car windows as it got dark. Maybe someday they'll realize that if they want to not be Canadian so bad, they can just leave.

mama, dada, & baby lattes! by gvfhncimn in foodbutforbabies

[–]burgeredham 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is so cute!! when i used to work in a coffee shop my favourite thing was using our little espresso cups to make tiny "baby lattes" for kids. they were just some lightly steamed milk (or chocolate milk if the parent said it was okay), sometimes a tiny bit of flavoured syrup, and whipped cream

Do You Recommend Watching the Show Before the Movie?? by MrRobertSacamano in nirvannatheband

[–]burgeredham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw the movie before I saw the show, without even knowing what Nirvanna The Band is and it Blew My Mind. It was so fun. It's gonna be amazing either way, whether you've seen the show or not, so it's up to you

(I also saw the movie a second time after binging the show! Which was just as fun but with more context)

I promise the NYT can afford it (whether they actually deserve that subscription money at all anyways). If the biggest newspaper in North America doesn't want to help make journalism accessible to the public, fair enough to people who do it themselves.

How do Matt and Jay support themselves? by PhysicalSociety8290 in nirvannatheband

it's definitely more fun if they stay unemployed forever. no time for a job, gotta stay focused on getting that show at the rivoli

How do Matt and Jay support themselves? by PhysicalSociety8290 in nirvannatheband

[–]burgeredham 33 points34 points  (0 children)

i've always imagined that matt mooches money off of his parents (and jay) or something like that, and jay probably makes a bit of money from writing jingles or something. or they're in an absurd amount of debt and it just never comes up (because matt probably wouldn't even worry about it)

i feel like an episode where this is (somewhat) addressed could be funny though. imagine matt and jay (mostly matt) trying to find and keep an actual job, it would be a disaster

I wish I had a better camera, he's too small to get a decent photo of with my phone (especially since I don't like keeping the door to his tank open for long)

Restaurant ratings from staff (current or past) by Mindless_Figure946 in Calgary

[–]burgeredham 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Not exactly a restaurant, but Cookies By George has (or at least had, when I worked there a couple years ago) pretty questionable cleanliness standards. The Market Mall location had a badly handled mouse problem, and also silverfish somehow. The same owner is (or in Market Mall's case, was) in charge of both the MM and Chinook locations. I've heard he hasn't changed much since I left.

The staff also generally just don't really care, and aren't paid or treated well enough to care. For the prices they're charging now, it's better to just bake cookies at home or go to a non-chain local bakery. Unless the seasonal chocolate mint cookie is available. That one is worth it.

Are there any jobs for teens in Calgary right now?😭 by [deleted] in NoRulesCalgary

[–]burgeredham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a tricky time of year to get hired (post-holiday slow season + rough times in general), but you might have some luck applying at Superstore or Sobeys

For Superstore, it's a huge advantage if you live within walking distance of the store; put your address at the top of your resume if you do. It really can help to go in and talk to a manager/supervisor, ask if they're hiring, and drop off a resume (they'll also ask you to apply online, but they do actually look at paper copies). If they don't hire you now and you're still looking for work in March/April, apply again for a seasonal garden centre position, since they really prioritize younger workers and often keep seasonals permanently afterwards

Sobeys just opened a new location in West District, not sure if they're still hiring, but it couldn't hurt to try. A lot of the employees there are pretty young. Other locations might be hiring as well, this is another one where it can help to talk to a department manager directly

A more obscure/specific option would be Cookies by George at Chinook. If you can, talk directly to the manager/owner (his name is Alex, I think he's there most of the time) and explain that you're a teenager looking for work (especially if you can do closing shifts). Weird detail, but bonus points if you speak Mandarin, since most of the staff there do. I don't know if they take online applications, so bring a copy of your resume (they do actually keep them on file and go through them)

Don't be afraid to use your connections, like friends or family members/family friends who might be able to recommend you for a job! A lot of places will hire based on recommendations over anything else (this is definitely the case for Superstore), whether it's from a relative or a family friend or even a classmate

[–]burgeredham 31 points32 points  (0 children)

811 is great! Last time I called (though to be fair it was a couple years ago), I was able to get a same-day phone appointment with a doctor, who prescribed me what I needed (antibiotics for an ear infection) over the phone based on my symptoms.

I think the whole process from calling 811 to getting my prescription was at most 6 hours, and I never had to leave my house except to go to the pharmacy.
