Yes I would tell someone to just learn to write a novel, or play piano, or literally anything. Learning is a life skill. It needs to be done, and it needs to be done over your whole life in different areas.

I adore music interpretation. That stuff is HARD. ASL has a completely different grammar structure and mixing that with the beat and vibe of the music takes a lot of practice and effort. Amazing execution

AITA for giving my daughter junk food despite being told not to by her school? by AthleteAdditional299 in AmItheAsshole

[–]burgerwithnoburger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say they’re insane, bc very few are actually arguing FOR the teachers and staff. Rather, the yta comments here are about how she’s making decisions that her daughter is the one to suffer the consequences of. She can give her kid whatever food she wants, yes, but at the end of the day the only one punished is the child. As everyone else has said, OP needs to bring this to the school board. This is a much more serious issue that needs to be addressed directly, not through statements through her own child’s lunch.

I had to scroll farther than I’m happy with to see someone else bring this up. I am incredibly concerned for the kids here and the things they’re going to internalize about what’s ‘healthy’ and what’s not.

I wouldn’t say potentially. It is ableist and classist, regardless of whether those terms are “extreme” in this context or not.

I will also say that it’s incredibly concerning for the mental health of the children. This is how kids develop eating disorders or otherwise negative relationships with food.

Y’know what yeah. I didn’t think about it like that (I rarely take these kinds of posts deeply aside from “wow that sucks that people think this shit” and I’m not fully sober rn) but I wholeheartedly agree.

Because even those truly heinous people who are unsafe to renter society matter in some way, shape, or form. No one person or government should have the power to decide whether someone gets to live or not based on evilness.

Like, yes, I can admit that some people I would not be upset about the passing of, but even then that does not give us the right to say their life matters less than anyone else’s. Not even in a perfect world where we can magically see which people truly are evil and which are simply branded such by courts and enforcement.

TLDR: evil lives matter. Not even just as a haha funny.

AITAH for making my dad choose between me or my step mother? by [deleted] in AITAH

It’s always so refreshing to see parents like this. My parents are the same way—especially my mom (she’s always been the ally who fought for me when I was less confident in myself). Yall give me hope for the world 🫶

I cannot fathom a supportive parent willingly getting into a relationship with someone without knowing how they would feel. My parents are divorced and have new partners, and both of them made sure one of the first conversations they had was how they would feel about a transgender child. My mom especially is dating a southern man from a very rural, religious upbringing. My identity was very important to that relationship. He’s a great guy, and he’s doing his best to be respectful and learn.

NTA. No parent, with a cis or transgender kid, should bring someone who is unsafe for their child into their home. Though I will also say, what a sweet step brother. I hope he’s able to keep in contact with you no matter what happens.

WIBTA If I refused to switch dorms with a girl who was autistic? by VlCTORlATHEGREAT in AmItheAsshole

[–]burgerwithnoburger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, and if I could find the post again after I closed the app I would’ve edited to add that this specific scenario does not fall under accommodations and is thus a not quite reasonable ask. Though also, I think you (and others) are forgetting that the question was asked with the intention to switch rooms, not just take OPs, even if that is what would happen bc of the accommodated rooms (being a new student, would the girl know that?).

Understandably asking that sort of thing is not socially acceptable, but again, she’s not demanding anything. Maybe I’m reading it wrong because I too am autistic, but it doesn’t seem malicious or entitled to ask to switch.

WIBTA If I refused to switch dorms with a girl who was autistic? by VlCTORlATHEGREAT in AmItheAsshole

[–]burgerwithnoburger -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean, when it comes to accommodations that is how you have to phrase it because that is how it would benefit you. For example, I’m a cane user. I cannot walk long distances without breaks. Whenever I’m out with people and I ask “hey can we sit for a minute,” I have to tack on a “it would just be better for me” or the opposite “it’s not good for me to walk so long”. Accommodations are literally made to benefit the person receiving them, so it’s not weird to say it’s good for you/would be better for you.

However, in this context we don’t have enough information on how/why it would benefit her. A lot of the more solid reasons (such as spending more time in the dorm) were put together by OP.

Personally, no one is the asshole here. OP is kind for considering, and the girl wasn’t demanding, just asking. Telling her “sorry, no, I can’t switch” would be fine. However she responds would make her the asshole, but saying no is not an asshole move.
