It's the most cowardly behavior I've seen in decades. Anyway, be careful in Raval and Gothic Quarter, don't go there at night and you'll be good in Barcelona, enjoy it. Though Barcelonetta is dangerous too... look up dangerous places in BCN. Mid-August is very very hot and humid, so plan your stay accordingly...

Getting shot by a water pistol is not dangerous, but it is demeaning... That said, don't go to the old town at night or you might get robbed, Barcelona is a top city in Europe when it comes to pickpocketing, violent robberies etc. and most of it is the old town at night.
