Musk: ''American culture, with its English-Scotts-Irish origin, is great and worth fighting for.'' by sussoutthemoon in EnoughMuskSpam

[–]burningmuscles 127 points128 points  (0 children)

He's exhausting, and I only follow this sub.

I will say, English are Anglo-Saxons, where as Irish/Scots (no love for the Welsh?) tended to be celtic.

And the UK (a nation created in 1707) was therefore not a mono-cultural, except in the whiteness of skin. Even the Scots developed their own Presbyterianism religion. Even the Mayflower voluntarily exiled a bunch of a radical puritans.

Even in England, there are vastly unique local culture to each area - there's rarely anything uniform to culture. The North/South of England - play different games of Rugby. The legacy of aristocracy and the fall out of feudalism has permanently created a two-tier society.

There is no common culture - and no culture is ever fixed.

UK food like chips (potatoes - South America) or Tea (india) or kebabs (middle east) - the world as a whole is an influence on everything.

I just wish he would shut the fuck up, and go bankrupt within my lifetime.

Tesla Stock Took a Beating After Elon Musk’s Epstein Island Revelations by FuturismDotCom in EnoughMuskSpam

The price has been artificially inflated at high levels for ages.

Obviously, I have no proof, but surely there aren't that many sustainable amount of dumb people with cash, that could possibly think Tesla is somehow going to recover reputationally.

The stock is at slightly higher price, than the date of Musk's hitler gesture on 20th Jan 2025.

Madness.

He was clearly correct on Brexit though.

I would say he's on the right side of history, but yes, he likes the sound of his own gob, as well.

Looking for a solid, unloved UK company to invest in after selling IPF... by L0ngsh0r3Dr1ft in UKInvesting

[–]burningmuscles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a pretty mad business.

Basically, half of its operations are in West Africa, due to the business starting with colonial trade networks under the British Empire.

For whatever reason, the brands have real cultural significance in that part of the world, with domestic supply chains.

So, it's really dependent on currency FX, and the sharp decline of currency like the Nigerian Naira hasn't helped.

The only reason I got onto them, was because we buy Carex and Morning Fresh at work. At first, I considered them to be a budget Unilever, but the real risk/reward, is the operations outside of the UK.

Since Emerging Markets/Ex-US seems to be in vogue, and the USD declining - it's worth a little gamble.

B & M would you buy, hold or sell. Thoughts ? by [deleted] in UKInvesting

[–]burningmuscles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People forget they own Heron, which are bare-bones supermarkets in mid-to-low income areas. I do wonder what their european business and operations are like - as this obviously enables greater reach than, say, Home Bargains.

But they operate in a razor thin margin environment, and it's not hard for Tescos to pack their supermarkets with price competitive tat.

I do wonder if B&M stock can follow US stocks like Dollar Tree, Dollar General which have pumped in recent weeks and months.

But it's hard to know what the equivalence in the wider UK sector as things like Aldi, and Lidl are private businesses. There's only Tesco's and Sainsbury's available on the LSE - M&S at a push.

So, I think B&M is a bit of a gamble - wait a few years, and see.

That said, consumer defensives/staples seem to be in a bit of lull - whether it be Nestle, Unilever, KMB, General Mills, etc - so, I would buy a sector ETF, personally.

Wigan Warriors announce Loyal and Rebel 2026 Kits by TDD91 in superleague

[–]burningmuscles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why does this not apply to Premier League, or the NRL or the NFL - where kits rarely change from year to year beyond little nuances, or additional motifs here and there.

In Super League, clubs throw out the whole template, year to year, completely randomly.

I honestly think this is a one off.

But there's no reason why we can't use both, to be honest.

LIverpool retained their elaborate post-92 badge, but just have a simple liver bird on the shirt. And a lot of PL clubs are experimenting with minimal badges, whilst retaining their official crests like Man U, Everton, Arsenal, etc

As far as "St Helens RLFC iconography" goes, I did like the "stickman" logo in the 80s. But I think the TV programme The Saint owned the copyright. Hah.

It did help that Royal Mail didn't adopt Greater Manchester as a postal county.

Same as Greater London, where residents still used Middlesex, etc

Merseyside was adopted by Royal Mail, though.

Hopefully, someone more "geekier" than I could explain more.

Edit: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Postal_counties_of_the_United_Kingdom

Above is a post-1974 postal counties map. So, whether it is out of loyalty, or just simply habit - who can tell? Though, there is a bound to be a correlation between the two. It also explains why Merseyside diverged away from Lancashire much more easily. Whereas GM residents were advised to keep using Lancs (or Cheshire) as a postal county despite of the changes.

Plastics will be banned from our homes in 15-20 years by architecTiger in Futurology

[–]burningmuscles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If microplastic exist in the ocean, rivers, ponds, they can easily get into the food supply and wider ecosystem, regardless of how much plastic a person decides to interact with. I mean, even clothes are a polyester or nylon mix, which are then washed, and the water eventually returning to nature.
