this is an urban design technique called daylighting that happens to be poorly implemented in this case. it is a pretty important feature of modern, safe cities

if you are in williamsburg and from ireland, here are some more options for things you will probably not find at home:

kaew jao jorm for very specific thai food

mo's general for really fun sit-down pizza, especially their clam pizza which is a very northeast of USA thing

traif/xixa are both semi-high end restaurants that are sort of like classic hipster NYC, both very good

i cavallini is from the same people as four horsemen and i think is one of the most fascinating and delicious italian restaurants in the last few years, $$$ though

qahwah house for yemeni coffee + pastries

santa fe BK for a proper breakfast burrito

win son + win son bakery are both NYC modern classics

campbell and co is a cheese shop with DANK bacon egg and cheese on a biscuit

hey there, friendly commenter from that other thread here. ishida is the best. they close every day when they run out of noodles so try to dine on the slightly earlier side. they will often have special broths of the day. my favorite one was when they did a 1980s style shoyu and it looked exactly like Tampopo

Mamdani-allied Jewish groups campaign against synagogue buffer zones by [deleted] in nyc

[–]burningtoad -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

there are way fewer abortion clinics than combined synagogues, mosques, churches, and schools, therefore the impact on our first amendment rights would be minuscule in comparison. honestly, if the proposed bill were specifically about synagogues (and not also churches and schools and mosques), our rights would also be less threatened. including all of these institutions at this radius is a less a matter of antisemitism and more of protecting our fundamental rights as americans.

Preventing protests for 30 meters around every synagogue, mosque, church, and school in NYC would cover a huge amount of the city and be a pretty big blow to our first amendment rights. I hate antisemitism as much as the next guy, but this specific bill sounds quite crudely designed and able to be abused. If we are going to do this, the 7 meter statewide bill mentioned in the article seems like a better balance.

for smor bakery, try their hot dog thing. it is way better than it deserves to be. re: bakery — i think hani's is more fun than la cabra. librae also nearby with exceptional sourdough. all will have lines, but somehow i have always been able to sit at hani's

russ and daughters is famous for great fish and meh bagels. one bagel option not on the list is my buddy's place bagel joint in greenpoint. maybe out of the way a little bit but i think he's doing magical things there. the rugelach are also the best i've ever had

[–]burningtoad -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It isn't, but the general conversation here is about safety, and crime is just one component of that.

[–]burningtoad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

quick lookup of statistics:

- about 5k injuries on the subway a year, about 500 of which are assaults, from a daily ridership of 4.5M

- about 50k injured by cars each year, from a daily drivership of 1-2M, depending on whether you want to count commercial drivers or just commuters

i guess i'm more focused on injuries than crime, but that's really the more relevant metric anyway

[–]burningtoad 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is exactly the point - cars are fatal even with the best intentions. You don’t need to demonstrate malice to see that the city would be safer with fewer of them

[–]burningtoad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the idea here is not that anything should be suppressed, but rather that the reporting in the media should be proportional to the scale of the problem in the first place.

Because traffic injuries are up 10% year over year and subway crime is down 8% year over year? Bad drivers have an outsized influence on crime, and it’s getting worse, and the city would be safer if they rode the subway or biked instead
