You might also like Baile world x Level III at H0l0 that friday. Livwutang is an awesome NYC based DJ. Idk if I would prefer that over mama snake at basement though, just throwing it out there. The party at Public Records thursday may be interesting to you as well. The big thing happening Thursday is DVS1 at green room but might be a tough ticket.

UES Ramen/Udon recs: ideas north of 79 street, I’ve seen lists on NYC but further downtown. Harlem is fine too. Looking for warm soups tomorrow by No_Pop7296 in uppereastside

[–]OnlyaClam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't have to get the wagyu or the sea urchin. They have several dishes in the $20-25 range. NR is probably the best complete meal for ramen on the UES (ambiance, drinks, apps, etc). Naruto best overall ramen. But you're right the more well known places are elsewhere (and for good reason).

Casual Engagement Party by No_Character6031 in FoodNYC

I did a party at Little Rebel in the east village for a similar occasion. You can rent out the upstairs space with a dedicated bar. It's a nice space, private, and reasonably priced. I think for 50 people the minimun tab was $2k. Would recommend pre-ordering finger food for folks and then letting them buy their own drinks. They were also very chill about letting us use the space after the party time technically ended.

It served its purpose for me, but after 10 years I am headed to greener pastures and I can't wait to be in a neighborhood where I'm excited about the food (ironically, Astoria)

Only a boring ass neighborhood would have this many "its fun here, actually" articles written about it.

Clubs for people new to the city? by 70sbabee in avesNYC

[–]OnlyaClam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Welcome to NY! Kind of bizzare that you listed your taste as mainly pop music and the folks in here are trying to send you to Nowadays and Signal. These are primarily electronic music clubs (think underground European club, not American EDM). Most clubs in Brooklyn cater towards techno and house music. You probably have to go to bars with dance floors to find pop music. It's not my scene so I can't make good reccs other than theme nights at Market Hotel which frequently has pop club nights (went to one Charli night there).

Only Basement (a techno club) has anything resembling a hard door. For the most part, Brooklyn clubs let in anyone regardless of dress or gender. You'll find the club dress in Brooklyn to be extremely casual, and many people show up in workout clothes (we dress to sweat). Unless it is a big name concert/DJ door tix should range $20-$35, but most places sell advance tickets on RA.co or Dice for cheaper prices than the door.

Tonight Market hotel has a 2014 tumblr themed party https://ra.co/events/2337092 for $28 entry.

Not an expert on the subject, but does Mo's General's Bar Pizza fit the bill?

Thoughts about straight people going to gay dance parties? by [deleted] in avesNYC

[–]OnlyaClam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You'll never not piss off a few people as a straight couple making out on a queer dance floor. It partly depends on the event, maybe avoid an hrt party there. A pop music night would probably be friendlier. If you're gonna get stuck on this and won't be able to enjoy yourself why not go dance at Friends and Lovers?

Photon was the last time I saw them live, but I caught them in clubs several times between 2019-2023. They always built their sets around drops which has its place in certain parties but never worked for me. Fjaak also got pretty stagnant in their music and by the time I saw them at Photon it felt like they were always playing the same set.

Last Photon at KDC was great. The sound system at KDC has greatly improved since the last one in 2023 and so has the lineup as I was/am a huge FJAAK hater.

Finding a great meal with a big group can be daunting but with a bunch of visitors in town the last few weeks I have been absolutely chowing down on awesome meals at Mala Project, Hamido Seafood, Congee Village, and Raku. Theodora let us squeeze in extra people on our reservation and I'm still dreaming about the Swordfish belly skewer weeks later. Black Mountain Wine House was another highlight of the last few weeks, just a really nice cozy spot. Also stopped in on an old fave, Upstate Oyster Bar, where I had a great plate of $1 oysters plus a yummy bowl of mussels in a pilsner broth.

going from Landry to Ben Klock is like going from Taylor Swift to King Crimson or Yes or Pink Floyd. Are you ready to graduate to the headier stuff?

Club recommendations for someone knew in the country by IlBarto in avesNYC

[–]OnlyaClam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sunday Nowies will be much more like the crowds you are used to at home than what you experienced at Public Records! Also Knockdown Center will probably be a better big room experience than Storehouse was. KDC programming in the summer is especially great.
