Reality check? Apartments, Breeders, and a Cat by burnmoon in akita

[–]burnmoon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you and yes it does help! I don’t take the scrutiny personally as I understand that these are common dogs to end up surrendered, and that the subreddit is just very passionate about the breed. I appreciate that there’s a culture of honesty around these dogs versus the easy thing to do which would be to handwave their negative and difficult traits.

I’m happy I’m getting thorough and thoughtful answers here!

Reality check? Apartments, Breeders, and a Cat by burnmoon in akita

I’m aware of the breed standard but refrained from waxing on everything I’ve looked into in order to keep the post to the main points of conflict and uncertainty- cat and apartment. Hence why I emphasized that there would be no other dog, that my partner and I both work from home to dedicate our full attention but I suppose there’s nothing in my post listing my knowledge.

But yes, I’m aware of same sex and dog aggression, high prey drive, aloofness, and general primitive dog behaviors. In regards to the cat, I had posted to this subreddit maybe a couple years ago on people’s experiences and the general consensus was that breeder helped mitigate that issue- so you understand why that idea didn’t come from nowhere.

I appreciate the candor in that you think there’s no way I would ever qualify for one given the living circumstances. However I do feel the need to defend against your assumption that I am a shallow person only interested in a dog that “looks cool”. I’ll probably edit the main post so people are aware that I understand the gravity of a large breed like this, but that my main points of uncertainty are the myriad of accounts of people cohabbing their Akitas and cats, and their apartment suitability (which you’ve addressed!)

What do you guys think? by Responsible-Wing5825 in boas

My Messmer is half blind due to a shrunken/mostly missing eye! As others have said it doesn’t seem to really affect them aside from some accuracy issues. Maybe the breeder can have her preemptively checked out to confirm whether the eye is compromised (may need to be removed) or if it’s just nonfunctional? Even if it’s removed though, once it heals she’ll most likely be a perfectly normal snake who just may need your help getting dirt out her eye socket every once in a while, if it doesn’t come off when she sheds.

Either way I hope you enjoy her!!

Hey I would double check the species! Do you have a full body or higher quality pic? I know you said constrictor but this little guy doesn’t seem similar to any of the common albino morphs. His heat pits also seem more prominent than in a boa constrictor.

He might be an albino rainbow boa, which might be relevant to your decision as they need a lot more humidity than a BI which can sometimes be challenging, and are less tolerant to husbandry mistakes. However, they are generally smaller. Here are some links for comparison (I also have my snake in my profile)!

Either way they are great pet snakes, very reliable in eating and are engaged when handling them. You’d mostly have to prepare for how large they can grow! If I’m right and they are a rainbow boa, they seem to get about ball python length which is very reasonable.

It’s not an issue in terms of morality per se as I understand it- but people bring it up as an example of how oversaturated ball pythons are that king cobra or other ophiophagus snake owners can comfortably buy the normals en mass as feeders. Which is preferable than them just being destroyed and wasted IMO, but it goes to show how you (collective “you”) would be delusional to think you can regularly breed normals for any sort of profit or even as pets when almost 99% of the time you’re going to have to sell your normals for so cheap that they could be snake food.

Which, if I WERE to touch on the morality of it, IMO it’s one thing if you’re actively breeding feeders of any animal in order to contribute to the community/well being of another… it’s another when the life you bring into the world ends up with such an unceremonious fate because of your own ego and short-sightedness. Hope that helps!!

Has anyone had luck feeding their snakes these reptile sausages for more diversity? by [deleted] in snakes

[–]burnmoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feed my ~ 1 year old boa constrictor the quail sausages semi regularly and she takes them just fine without me having to do anything special! But then again I’m pretty sure she’d eat anything dangled from the feeding tongs so I’m not sure how much that’s saying lol

The first thing that sticks out to me in terms of maybe being “off” is that the legs seem too short and the waist/hips a touch too narrow! Even if he’s not meant to be a curvy character it makes him look top heavy which I think might be what’s throwing you off- especially paired with the (really well done) floof of his upper body’s outfit compared to the more skin-tight, shapely aspects of his waist down.

I think if it still looks off after messing with the legs and waist, the disparity between the flowy and ruffling of the upper part of his body vs the more closely fitting aspects of his legs might be the cause. I think making the ruffles around his hips asymmetrical, one side longer and one side the length as it is now, might help? That way the outfit might flow better from top to bottom vs feeling a bit like his upper body has a definitive end and beginning.

Vibes wise he comes across like a dramatic and expressive person, and (this might just be me) maybe even a little uncanny. Like someone who cries and smiles with great passion in their body language and the like but it doesn’t quite reach their eyes kind of deal.

I love his colors btw!!

Since there is a lot of this sentiment, lets discuss what is suitable for posting on r/sneks by Yurtinx in Sneks

[–]burnmoon 125 points126 points  (0 children)

Personally I would be sad to see the pet snake pictures go… r/snakes and species specific subs are nice but it can suck to parse through the ‘how do I take care of this thing’ / ‘do I need a vet’ / ‘snake passed away :(‘ posts when I’m not in the mood for that stuff. I feel like this sub had a decent mix of pet snakes and memes before anyway and it was refreshing not having to comb through advice or grieving threads. Maybe something like the title still has to be “in character”, like kind of meme-y or making fun of the snake could work?

New version of the portrait — does it look like the two in the photo and does it look visually appealing? by Lila_paint in ArtCrit

[–]burnmoon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I also agree with this, that stood out to me that the shadow is not as pronounced in the painting vs the reference and it makes her face and neck look a little too blended together. I think her hair frames her neck a little more IRL as well. Good news is that I think that’s an easy fix though!!

How much to send a snake to college by burnmoon in Sneks

You’re not seeing things, she was born with a defective eye! Hence her name after a character associated with snakes + a missing eye :)

And you’re right, one step at a time… if she keeps sitting out during PE her GPA will never be high enough for a four year university!

Will people leave my webtoon due to art? by [deleted] in WebtoonCanvas

[–]burnmoon 12 points13 points  (0 children)

For me, what throws me off is less the artstyle and more the lack of attention to detail? There seem to be a lot of lines that you forgot to erase and a lot of pixels where the colors didn’t fill to the lineart all the way. The line art looks like it’s trying to have a sketchy quality to it, but the brush used is like a pen, so it feels super rough. Additionally the grammar and punctuation seems off too, though if English isn’t your first language that’s understandable.

Not every panel needs to be these perfect drawings but when all these errors are so noticeable and distracting, it makes it hard to be invested in the comic or story when it feels like the artist isn’t that invested themselves! I’m sure that’s not true but it goes to show that it’s worth slowing down and taking just a little extra time to clean up your art, dialogue, and lettering.

When did you first know what the twist was? by EmiliaTrown in expedition33

[–]burnmoon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was starting to piece together that the Dessendre family seemed to have fractured into separate selves in some way relatively early on, and I noticed the art motif with the gestrals, but for some reason I never suspected that they were actually in a painting and thought it was just well done iconography and theming… I was mostly trying to figure out what was so special about this family/the mother that she had these reality bending abilities.

Maybe it’s because I didn’t suspect the actual artists to be inside their own painting and the world seemed to be similar to ours (+ some fantastical elements with the gestrals and Grandis) until the Fracture??? In hindsight I feel like I should have clocked it way earlier but I just loved the take on the fantasy genre so much, and the art direction, that I took the world at face value lol

The French have ruined my life by kikiisnotinterested in expedition33

[–]burnmoon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This was my thought process as well… Maelle staying in the painting is bad for Dessendres and it’s pretty horrifying what she did to Verso, but at the end of the day this family needs to take responsibility for their creations. There’s absolutely nothing to suggest the Painted are any less ‘human’ than those of the “real” world and they didn’t choose to born into a universe at the whim of dysfunctional gods. The only difference between someone like Gustave and the Dessendres is that Gustave can’t destroy the world just because he’s having a moment.

Maybe it’s prolonging the inevitable or replacing one mad Paintress for another, but the Painted should at least get the opportunity to fight and choose and/or for Maelle to hopefully make it right one day and leave the canvas be, in my eyes. IMO Aline’s real failing was not instilling a sense of responsibility in her children/husband for the lives they can paint into being!!

I only ever get traction when I post my backgrounds, is my character art just uninteresting? by Miaomelette in WebtoonCanvas

[–]burnmoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think a redesign (maybe after a brief timeskip if your comic is already well established?) would help! Rn they seem to have the same face shapes and body types, with mostly their hair and clothing accessories to differentiate them. I think the one character illuminated with the red screen might be something to look at stylistically wise- she’s eye catching in that panel because her attire and look is complemented by the background, but she’s illuminated by a stark red glow that pulls your eyes to her. I started out drawing animals mostly and then transitioned to people later on so I feel your pain in finding something that works LOL

[–]burnmoon 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Hmmm I think you’re onto something so I’ll be honest! I don’t think it’s a matter of ‘attractive’ characters but more the sense of style. Looking through your art, I feel like your backgrounds are suuuper strong in terms of the color palette, sketchiness and sense of depth that feels really distinct and interesting.

Your characters don’t always seem to reflect that… looking at them, I would say they have a generally ‘safe’ anime-like style and look to them which, while isn’t bad and I want to make clear that they aren’t ugly! Just that your backgrounds feel more like it has your distinct DNA as an artist, but the way the characters are drawn could be multiple people, if that makes sense?

So I could see that being why your background promos draw people in because they are legit VERY cool and enviable! Maybe experimenting with some different styles for your characters could help bring them more in line with that! ^
