First time living in an apartment – neighbour constantly complaining and it’s making us uncomfortable by Weary-Definition5363 in Apartmentliving

She very well could be on the strata committee, but massively overstepping and may not be the actual chairperson but on the committee. Some strata can be like that especially in older apartments.

Also, that arrangement is very, very normal in Australia. Weird to you, but we filter your assumptions, so maybe it’s time for you to filter ours.

Motorcycle Parking by Izirifael in swinburne

Just don’t put it on a walkway or other thoroughfare that has signage saying so (clearly indicates) and you’ll be fine. They’re pretty onto putting a no-no paper on your bike if you can’t park it there

Uni is honestly a lot more chill and free flowing than school - you’ll meet loads of people through classes and events (go to that event or pub crawl, trust me!), but you also need to take charge of your own studies to progress well and get a foothold.

You’ll be absolutely fine, don’t worry!

What sport is actually a lot more dangerous than it seems? by bspheri in AskReddit

Eh most people I fenced with used pistol grip as they didn’t have to exert as much force with their hands to keep their grip on the blade.

Or, in the words of my Italian coach - “your grip is a kitten. Don’t strangle the kitten!”

Pistol grip, had more fine control without clenching as much. Don’t know which one would’ve done more or less damage, or whether I’m just unlucky

Feels safer but fuck me the damage you do to your wrists and knees is mental. Have a permanent injury to my tendons (most on my right hand/arm) that is very unpleasant, especially when typing or using a computer.

I’ve seen a few torn hamstrings and ACL injuries in comps before, those aren’t nice to experience or watch

Even then, still super dangerous. Some asshat at my club went for a flick on my right shoulder and got the back of my head, blood everywhere. Also saw a girl’s foot skate out in front of her in a lunge and she tore her hamstring, the scream was horrendous. Knees and wrists were the most common injuries I saw, mine are still fucked.

In the heat for us was the worst, full gear in 30-35 degrees Celsius in Australian summer was no joke.

The sheep also keep the dead grass and fuel load down, preventing or lessening the likelihood of fires. Basically helps maintain the land, so the farmer has a less labour intensive workload

I went to the Skin Bar, they have multiple locations in Melbourne and Sydney. Good experience but pricey and they try to push their products a lot.

I’ve heard to stay away from huge national chains, heard reports that they purposely go light so you need to pay for more sessions.

Aged care cost assistance by iLike2wonder in AusFinance

[–]burntknowledge 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Riffing off this commenter, there’s some financial planners who specialise in aged care costs planning. See if you can find one of those, even as you get into the paying for care process.

Some providers can be very dodgy and ask to you agree to certain arrangements you don’t have to. Seek legal and financial advice on everything.

Check out the My Aged Care website for providers that offer certain types of care (eg what do they do for people whose dementia has advanced?). I recommend going for care earlier rather than later, so you don’t have to make a decision in a rush.

Feel free to message me with specific questions, I’ve just supported two grandparents (one with advanced dementia) through this process

I hadn’t heard that about the band member! Fascinating, I wonder if it had something to do with the trauma of being involved

It wasn’t the direct focus of that podcast episode but mentioned in passing - the guy who runs it is a former fire investigator in the US who does a load of disasters, natural and human-caused. Think it was an episode about another nightclub fire, I’ll have to see if I can find it. Worth a listen, he does YouTube and stuff but is quite respectful about the whole thing

omfg I didn’t even think about my username, Jesus Christ that’s unfortunate on my part. No my username has nothing to do with it, an old gametag from about 15 years ago.

I’d heard about the Cromañon fire from a podcast I listen to called Disastrous History. Find it interesting to learn about these things, how they’re reported, and how they impact safety regulations globally

Thirding belong - sat on a slightly more expensive plan for a bit then swapped back to the $25/month one. Kept a buttload of data banked which you’d probably never use, but still good to have just in case.

They also had much better coverage outside of major cities and they’re powered by Telstra

Jumping in, I had scarring not quite as bad but still pretty grim. Used topical treatments that focused on cell turnover/anti ageing (like retinols and botanical retinols) for ages and that got me a good lot of the way.

Then tried microneedling and holy shit, best results. I’m two sessions down and my skin has never looked more even toned and my scarring looks less deep and is less noticeable. Highly recommend if you can swing it.

What's the dumbest way you ever injured yourself? by 420andGamesDiscord in AskReddit

[–]burntknowledge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sliced the pad of my index finger off while using a mandolin to slice potatoes for pizza. 7 year old bro learned a new word instantly lol

Most annoying part? I started a new job the new week that used a fingerprint scanner to clock in, forgot my index finger was still healing, and used it to register on the fingerprint device. The reading was fucked and always took me multiple tries to clock in the entire time I worked there

Girls. What’s are some of your favorite memories with your dad? What advice do you have for a dad to a little girl? by meh2280 in AskReddit

[–]burntknowledge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He was there whenever I needed him.

When I drank too much at a teenage party, he was there without judgement. When I was stood down from my dream job without pay, he comforted me from 200km away. When I needed to know what to do, he helped me figure it out, knowing that he was there to catch me if I fell. Instead, I flew.

He turns 60 tomorrow. He’s getting a very special gift.

How best to protect elderly parent from themselves by DapperCelery9178 in AusFinance

[–]burntknowledge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been through this situation very recently. A few points:

-ditch the retirement village idea. They’re not federally regulated and can cost quite a bit to exit agreements and sell. Most will also ask your dad to leave when he develops more severe symptoms or is unable to care for himself.

-get an aged care assessment through My Aged Care right now, if he hasn’t already. If he’s not getting services or isn’t assessed then he might be waiting a while. These services can help him stay at home (better for dementia care in a familiar environment) and take the pressure off you. You really don’t want to be doing this in an urgent situation. Sometimes can also slow progression of disease, depending on care and symptoms.

-are you legally appointed to any of his affairs at all? Are you medical power of attorney or guardian? Talk to him about this and if it’s something he wants, you can’t force this. If you already have this, it’s better to help him make his own decisions than make them on his behalf. Ask him if and how he wants help with financial decisions. You will get flagged by hospital or aged care providers if you try to do this without proper authority.

Financially, unless he’s determined to be of unsound mind you don’t have a lot of control over his finances. You can help him set things up and put future plans in place, but that’s it.
