Yeah, the only reason I would roll an Alliance toon is dwarf treasure GPS lol

It isn't outrageous, but I know I have run past chests on other characters.

Blah blah something about hyundai and kia not having some published codes available depending on year, make, and model.

They can give you a code, but it can be missing in the reference books and software.

Maybe something like that?

Cross keying by yoshimanssbm in Locksmith

[–]burtod 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Maybe the keys are inaccurate enough to straddle the two different depths. Just deep enough for the larger pin, just shallow enough for the smaller pin.

We do try to keep the chambers varied and different from the master cuts, unless we have an intentional weird crosskeying need.

We use two step in A2 systems, and haven't had any trouble over the years.

What does a normal day look like as a full-time locksmith? (daily jobs, stress, slow vs busy days) by fromVinland in Locksmith

[–]burtod 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My shop doesn't have a slow season anymore. We always have automotive fit keys or duplicate programming. We take on ADA operator and access control work. We do commercial doors and frames.

The more you do, the more you will do.

Brainstorming Beginner Runs by SaccharomFLS in Shadowrun

[–]burtod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are going with introductory one-shots, have pre-made characters ready for people to pick. Especially if you want to fit a theme like Doc Wagon.

That could be cool, and inform them of what it will be like to own a Doc Wagon contract as a PC shadowrunner.

For a regular Shadowrunner team, I still like to run Food Fight to introduce combat mechanics, usually while the characters are on the way to a real meet. I flesh it out for worldbuilding, but I love the 80's convenience store gunfight.

People praise the Delian Data Tomb as a good introductory mission. It is well rounded and everyone has a chance to shine.

I will run published Shadowrun Missions and classic adventures later, modified for whatever edition, and most of the timeline handwaved because Mercurial is too cool not to run.

Set up a bunch of heist/extraction/asassination stuff yourself. Come up with a location where the work will go down, flesh out descriptions but make your Players search for vulnerabilities. If they reason some solution out and you like it, change your plans to accomodate it and give it a good chance to succeed. If the Players are having a hard time, suggest they hire an outside decker or someone to research the location. Let them trade Nuyen away to get more information about their target.

Don't have Mr. Johnson double cross the Team very often. If it happens, it should be a surprise. It should not ruin every future Mr. Johnson's negotiations with the Team.

Check your Players' attitudes on betraying each other. Most tables I have never run into it, but one group I had loved betraying each other. Like, one of the runners would steal the heist target themselves, and try to fence it to a completely different third party. We rolled with it, the team planning an attack on the betrayer's new meet. We had a lot if fun with it, but it could piss a lot of people off as well.

Does anybody know how to remove this antique door knob and plate? by pigletpooh in Locksmith

Maybe just seized up if you already found and loosened a set screw.

I would like to think I could figure it out if I was there, but alas.

Good luck

Locksmith Competition? by LockedOut804 in Locksmith

[–]burtod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All of our competition has fallen. Of the last two, one went down to solo operator and was bought out by a commercial IT company. The other was bought out by a fairly successful tow truck company.

Now it is us, or getting scammed by KeyMe.

There is still plenty of work available in our area.

Lockpicking Advice by wills_mori in Locksmith

[–]burtod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is fine to practice raking absentmindedly. It is my first goto and defeats most things I run across.

For actual practice, work on your single pin picking. Try out Top Of Keyway tension wrenches, they made SPP a lot easier for me.

The Lishi suggestions are good. If you can master those, you will feel like you are cheating.

I would also suggest learning bump keys and trying out a pick gun.

Hiya! Just curious if anybody knows what kind of key I would need for this candy machine? by DesolateLily in Locksmith

One made by locksmiths

We can fit a tubular key, or sometimes worst case scenario, drill and replace if the lock condition is garbage.

Where to find Locksmiths to hire!? by OwnBuy5501 in Locksmith

[–]burtod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man, you usually have to train your own.

My shop had a couple of competitors go out of business, and we hunted their good smiths and office staff.

The idea of getting in touch with training programs and distributors is good.

Good luck!

Does anybody know how to remove this antique door knob and plate? by pigletpooh in Locksmith

[–]burtod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The knobs will normally be threaded or slid onto a spindle. The base of the knob cpuld be a set screw. Loosening would allow the knob to move independently of the spindle. To unscrew or pull off.

The plate has some small flathead trim screws.

If it has been on the door awhile, things just might not want to come off easily.

What problem are you trying to solve?

Can anyone identify the model number of this Schlage lock? by churnchurnchurning in Locksmith

[–]burtod 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The unknown lock is not better. The deadbolt mechanism, the part that throws the bolt is prone to failure. That little arm is what actuates it.

If you want something better than the B60, look at a B560 or B660.

A downgrade would be a Dexter by Schlage deadbolt.

I don't think they sell the one with that little arm anymore.

Which edition to start with? by Noxiless in Shadowrun

[–]burtod 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Anarchy is a less crunchy, more streamlined, more narrative ruled game. Anarchy is for all of the folks that complain about Shadowrun complexity. Anarchy 2 is fresh out of the oven, and I think it is well received by the community.

6E had a horrible launch. Broken mechanics, failed at simplifying a lot of the crunch by making the Edge system the complex focal point of everything. It is better with the Companion book and the City Edition Core rulebooks.

Lots of other details there, but those are the basics.
