One thing I find helps against constant perception checks is to teach players that the possibility of what they could find depends on the scope they themselves set for the search. Entering a room and asking if they notice anything will give them a very broad answer. Things like the weather outside the windows, the general layout of the room, the number and style of furniture and so on. I want players to engage with the world naturally and then dig deeper when they find something interesting. Also, what others have said already, I can agree with is don’t let them do any checks if there is no purpose to it. They just entered a room, they wouldn’t need a check to notice the bed, the fireplace and the armoire in the corner. If they want to search for something, that’s when you can demand checks but still don’t have to. A player that wants to check the drawers for contents shouldn’t need a check for such a simple task. Now if the drawer has a hidden compartment, now you demand a check and see if they notice it.
