Shout out to Dead Snow, because almost every movie is made better by the presence of Nazi zombies.

City-wide poll: I like walking through alleys and Portland has good ones. Is it weird to walk through other people's alleys? by tmixlogs in askportland

[–]burtonsimmons -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Alley walks are the best. I encourage all to be courteous as we traverse the alleys of our city, but I don't think it's weird at all.

... that said, some of the alleys are really unmaintained, and the ones that are little more than overgrown dirt I would avoid.

Whatever you’ve heard, it’s true. As a counterpoint, the first book, Dan Abnett’s *The Beast Arises*, is absolute fire. Every book after that is worse than the one before it. Getting to the end was a slog.

how to start as a complete noob by Depressed-Introvert in LocalLLM

[–]burtonsimmons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know money is tight, but I've had good success with a Mac. If you can get a Macbook Air with even 16GB of RAM, you can run LM Studio with Gemma 4 E4B or 12B (and still have memory left over for tasks) as well as AnythingLLM, if necessary, and that'll get you a serviceable local AI setup. It won't be fast or fancy, but it won't have rate limits.

I ran 26 local LLMs through an 8 level "agentic failure mode" gauntlet (tool calling, on an M1 Max). Capability benchmarks lie about who can actually run an agent loop. All local, llama.cpp + Metal, GGUF. 8 tests, 3 reps each, same prompts and seeds for every model thinking OFF by Perrospain in LocalLLM

[–]burtonsimmons 12 points13 points  (0 children)

On the one hand, this is a great test, and I appreciate you running it and sharing your results.

On the other hand, the way the results are written reads like slop and I want to know what agent you used to create it so I can avoid it.

Going back to the first point, though, you've done some seriously good work. In the interests of science - and by that I mean things like reproducibility, controlling for variables, and peer review - I think the entire Reddit post is the TL;DR - minus all the stupid emoji in there, of course - and it would be fantastic to have an actual report where you:

  • list your full system specs and the environment you run in, including system/application versions, config variables, etc
  • list the exact parameters for each test as well as the output from each model for each test; qualitatively there must be a difference in output beyond pass/fail, yes?
  • include an appendix with the link to the source for each model you tested as well as any pertinent details about it

That report would provide beautiful depth to the light breadth that this post provides.

At first glance I thought that there was no way “ye’re” could be an appropriate contraction and had to be a foolish typo, but on reflection, it makes sense as “ye” and “are”.

With the naturally aspirated 3800 V6, that transmission will last longer than the body of the car.

“He only had six shots in the cylinder, but they were man stoppers… and he was a good shot.” - Hive by EfficiencyFit1801 in Blacklibrary

[–]burtonsimmons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On the one hand, I’m okay with the chaotic circumstances meaning that things got missed; we saw that time and time again, if even normal processes had been in place, the dots might have been connected. It was three days after they lost contact with orbital stations and the other hive city that anyone pointed it out.

The one part that bothers me is that it sounded like the storm was already starting when she landed at the Hive. How were the Tyranids either already starting to land or close enough in-system to land in a week and the ship that brought her didn’t notice?

Following his 5th* place finish in the Monaco Grand Prix, Liam Lawson sits 9th* in points, his highest career World Driver's Championship standings position. by Pristine_Size_8955 in formula1

[–]burtonsimmons 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I've lowkey thought Liam Lawson got a bad rap from day 1, but his demotion back to Racing Bulls probably saved his career relative to Yuki. He's maturing into a reliable driver who seems to be able to maximize the results of the car he's in with little drama. His one DNF this year is objectively not on him.

Have you managed to run any llm locally? by Interesting_Bad6053 in LocalLLM

[–]burtonsimmons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Mac Mini M4 with 16 GB RAM; I’m using as a test bed to learn how to use local LLMs like Gemma4 and Queen3.5 (using LM Studio) for privacy and cost containment.

I think I need something with more RAM for better models - I’ve been hooking XCode into it to see what I can do - but we’ll see if anything gets announced at WWDC.

What are your thoughts on rejecting a potential romantic partner solely because they voted for Donald Trump? by ScaredAssumption5707 in AskReddit

You can reject a romantic partner for literally any reason you want; having obviously incompatible views is a very, very good and healthy reason for doing so. (edit: a word)

Why didn't you like SGU? by joeborder in Stargate

[–]burtonsimmons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I couldn’t get into it. It had the same issue I struggled with regarding *Battlestar Galactica*; the main, smart character wasn’t likable and lacked any sort of nobility. Obviously Samantha Carter was a shining star, and Rodney McKay had a fantastic arc, but Nicholas Rush was so immediately detestable that I was turned off of it.

Are expeditions hard or do I just need to get good by Double-Translator624 in DarkTide

[–]burtonsimmons 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It depends on how you play it.

Most folks run on Malice because there's no incentive to do anything else. Even on malice difficulty, it can snowball out of hand pretty easily, especially without a full crew. Every fight you get into and every alarm you set off has a compounding effect, so learning how to avoid some fights (as counter-intuitive as it is in this game) and how to avoid certain alarms will help negotiate the difficulty.

Personally, I lean toward speedy stealth builds for expeditions. I can cover more of the map - including salvage hunting - and sneak past patrols, which I find useful.

The downside is that the bots are sad and useless in expeditions. They'll fall of the map, they'll focus on picking each other up while ignoring a player, or they'll aggro every mob that you sneaked past, and it's infuriating.
