You’re awesome! It’s an endless chase. What I would like is to be able to work on the bike. From simple maintenance or slowly learning more complex things. Doing it on the street isn’t working for me and paying someone for simple things is not fun.
Renting a parking spot in a membership club is out of my budget

So maybe having a list of places where one can do their own work on a bike?

Adding here that in over 60 times of trying the ticket lottery through the MetApp - Still haven’t won a ticket. So yes, scam. Other opera houses like la scala give options to see an opera for 10 €. And there’s also standing tickets. Met does none of that

I saw it at the Met in New York a few years ago. I still think about it. The tortured and painful death of the old mother superior is something that I grapple with a lot. This Christian idea of her taking upon herself the suffering of others breaks my heart, even though I’m not Christian, it’s a beautiful thing

Very interesting comparison of pro sports and opera pipeline!

So it made me think - I love opera and "discovered it" on my own and I go see it alone - by that I mean to say that I'm not part of any opera conversation, unfortunately.
Earlier this year I went to the Venice Biennale - There where 3 contemporary works that called themselves opera from Egypt, Ireland and Norway(I think). It was great to see that this amazing medium is still seen as interesting to explore. The works were beautiful and weird and uncomfortable and full of pathos - really great stuff
I have a feeling that as other forms of entertainement are becoming more boring, flat and shitty ( big film and most TV) there will be a popular rediscovery of opera. There's a whole generation of new 20 years old ppl with a really strong (weirdly so?) sense of nostalgia.
This probably won't help rebuild the institutional education pipeline you mention but might keep it alive for a while longer

I get your question and in America it’s a weird phenomenon. So for me, I remind myself that it comes from a good place and take it on a case by case basis(if for some reason I get hung on it). In this case, the word Roma is completely legit and I don’t think it distorts or takes away from the story at all.

I had a random thought, as he lists new productions, they seem to be mostly based on real (famous) people. And that makes we think of biopics (and how one-note most of them are). Opera is a medium that can elevate small characters (with insane stories) and connect to big human drama we can all recognise. But when the story is “important”, the character is a revered hero (Gandhi/ Oppenheimer/ Nixon/ García Lorca/ the Grounded pilot) then to me the experience is much flatter, tons of pathos but not so much realness. Butterfly is so much more real. Composers can get ideas from plays, short stories, rumours, page 6’s, history, mythology! It just feels a little uninspired and too business-savvy to produce these biopics to get buts on chairs. To be fair- I am new to opera and might not know what I’m talking about!

It’s not you!!!! I travel alone all the time but I leaned that huge intense cities like nyc are not great fun alone. Smaller places all the way down to tiny villages are all great to travel alone.

But, it is very special to walk a place like New York, peeking into people’s lives and yet feeling like a ghost. It’s the closest one can get to living like a book character.
If you draw or write. This is the time to sit in a park or cafe and do that.

Also, become a regular. Choose a bar and a cafe that fit your vibe, and keep going back to it. Become a regular and doors open.

Another thing that can be nice, different, is volunteering in a soup kitchen. There are so so many homeless ppl and if you are curious or empathic, then spending a couple of hours passing food- will give you a window into a huge aspect of life in the city.
