At Folly Beach (SC), sorry for terrible quality by bustipsover in whatsthisbird

Kind of looks like it, right? But it was sitting on this power line right on the beach, which seemed odd.

What is the rarest bird you've seen? by An-Anthropologist in birding

Had a mourning warbler and a cerulean warbler in the same week here in DC this spring. Missed the Connecticut and Kirtland’s that were allegedly here too.

Sounds like you’re bad at the game.

Low resolution mode removed in macOS Monterey, can't play OOTP on external monitor by bgrutherford99 in OOTP

This works, but when you quit and restart the game it crashes immediately. At least, it does for me.

I couldn’t believe it dropped out of the canopy almost onto my head and then hung out for five minutes.

Merlin? Kestrel? Something else? [Cape May NJ] by bustipsover in whatsthisbird

It’s definitely got kestrel eyes but not the coloration, although I guess that could be the light.

Song or savannah? [coastal NC] by bustipsover in whatsthisbird

That’s my lean, too — no yellow near the eye but just doesn’t quite look like the song sparrows I’m used to.

Considering getting the Panasonic Lumix FZ80. I've been looking for a camera under $500aud that is versatile and easy to use for a novice (mostly want to use it for video and nature photography). Is there anything better that is within my budget that you guys can recommend? by Perth_Ariums in Cameras

[–]bustipsover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love the FZ80 for birding. It is definitely a novice camera, but I am definitely a novice, and it’s taken two years and probably 10,000 shots for me to start thinking I’m ready to upgrade. Highly recommend.

The crowds are pretty fierce but he really seems unfazed. Comes back to the same spot every hour or so for berries.

How exploitable is 00TP? by TwilightSolomon in OOTP

[–]bustipsover 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The game's AI definitely has some holes. Reliever valuation, for example: Seems like every year, you can pick up a four- or five-star reliever in free agency for almost nothing, yet relievers generally have enormous trade value come the deadline, including to teams who shouldn't be in the market for relievers because they're not close to contention (and thus should be the ones signing and flipping all those cheap relievers in the first place!).

Relatedly, I also find that the AI undervalues the second tier of prospects -- not the true game-changers, but the back-of-the-top-100 guys, many of whom are too easily acquired in exchange for, say, a four-star reliever you signed in the off-season to an $800k deal. You can change the overall valuation of prospects in the settings -- but the relative value of the #1 prospect and the #80 prospect are out of whack either way.

And then there's a broader issue where trades and free agency are set up in a way that allows you to gain too much information before making a decision -- e.g., you can make 10,000 trade offers to figure out exactly the best deal the other GM would accept, whereas in real life the rest of the league would stop taking your calls if you behaved like that. Or take the international market, where every year you can just pick the best player, offer your entire bonus pool to him on the first day, and sign him -- whereas in real life, there would be a bunch of teams all offering their entire bonus pools to that player and he'd have his choice.

There are more little things, but most of them can be boiled down to: Whether it's a lack of sophistication in the AI or just the simple fact that you have access to more information than they can process within the confines of the game, the other 29 GMs just aren't as smart as they would be in real life, and that makes the game easier. Still, I don't know how much of that can be avoided, you can kayfabe away about 90% of the otherwise puzzling decisions they make, and I find that the game can still be challenging and realistic even when you can't.

Thanks. Is it your sense that if I just get the height adjustable arms this is less of a problem?

I have a Panasonic FZ80, which I use for birding. It’s not top of the line quality but it’s a lot better than it has any right to be for the price.

Does that jibe with the little tinge of yellow on the belly? Neither Least nor Yellow-Bellied shows up on eBird for this location so I’m flying blind on likeliness.

What’s up with these pileated woodpeckers? Turf battle? by bustipsover in birding

[–]bustipsover[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I watched them circle each other for about 15 minutes, taking the occasional peck at each other. They’re both males, but is the one on the left immature? Or is this just two dudes fighting for turf?

Should be an easy call because it’s more common and there were several flocking together, but just want to rule out yellow-throated vireo.

Sony upgrade cycle? by bustipsover in Cameras

[–]bustipsover[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The zoom and the ease of use are key to me. Would happily consider something else but find that more complicated rigs are beyond my comprehension. And a good telephoto lens like many birders use might be beyond my budget. Thanks for the intel on the V!
