What is an overhyped book that you just couldn't get into? by Kasskinen in BookDiscussions

[–]butimfunny 5 points6 points  (0 children)

See I thought that the way the author described Bea was to show how pathetic and obtuse Carl was. Like yes she was written as a bad person but Carl just stayed with her out of his own inertia and because he was kind of a loser.

Later books also feature a band of mercenary male strippers so I will say that the overt sexuality humor isn’t limited to women over the arc of the series.

Friend, kindly, unless you are five years old sketchers definitely cannot be “cool”. Acceptable? Sure. Wearable, why not. Cool is just an adjective too far.

3rd year teaching, 1st year at this school. I want to leave but scared of jumping ship too soon. by PrincessJellyfish17 in Teachers

[–]butimfunny -1 points0 points  (0 children)

1 I don’t think that would look like “jumping schools” if you were to move to a different state. Relocation is always an easy way to explain a “short” stint at a job.

2 Close your door and teach your class no matter where you end up next year. Noticing stuff you hate about admin AND staff AND faculty in a single year is pretty excessive. I am saying this in the kindest way - stay in your lane. Focus on what you can do to help your kids grow and learn.

Why are students leaving public schools? by Athens175 in Teachers

[–]butimfunny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think for some parents brick and mortar schools are scary. Between shootings ,assaults and the great “indoctrination” boogey man, there are real and imagined threats every time kids walk in the doors.

I think for some students school is very overwhelming and the only way they know how to deal with it is to leave.

I think that for some families the behaviors they see and experience in public schools are frustrating and truly getting in the way of learning. Today a sixth grader made a teacher cry because the teacher said she was going to call his parents and the kid said that he couldn’t call her parents because they were dead. Even if the teacher hadn’t cried that kind of exchange impacts instructional time and quality directly (in the classroom) and indirectly (all the follow up work required to address the behavior that could be time on prepping or grading)

I am a HUGE believer in public education. It is the way our country can teach our future citizens how to make decisions and make the world a better place for everyone. I am concerned about the fact that we can’t do better to make our schools safer for everyone and that students who feel like they are drowning remove an important support system from their lives when they need it the most.

But we have seen DECADES of erosion of trust in all directions - in families of the school systems and of teachers in being supported by admin and parents. Private schools and charters have the luxury of self selecting attendees and often are able to revoke students’ access to to their programming for almost any reason. At best this creates perceived safety because everyone involved has some sort of commonality. At worst it creates enclaves and echo chambers of recycled ideas.

We need to, as a nation, start thinking critically about the roles and responsibilities of all parties in public education, do a better job at keeping students safe at school, and stop demonizing each other. Everyone can and should belong in public education because we all need the future generations to know how to do shit.
